<p><strong>The PERFECOAT Project</strong></p><p>The pursuit of a climate-neutral Europe and a truly circular economy requires attention to virtually all fields of production if fossil-based materials are to be eliminated. This relates not only to manufactured goods but also the paints and coatings used to protect them; of the almost 1 million tonnes of paints and coating produced in Europe each year, more than 80% are derived from fossil resources. Reducing the impact of these coatings would represent a major advance in Europe's climate ambitions.</p><p>To address this challenge, the PERFECOAT project will develop and validate a new generation of industrial wood and decorative coatings with significantly more than 25% bio-based components. The project will address three important markets for coatings, high-volume, UV-curable clear coatings, waterborne trim paints for DIY and waterborne wall paints. These coatings will reach, and even surpass, the current quality and sustainability standards.</p><p><a href="https://perfecoat-project.eu">https://perfecoat-project.eu</a></p>

Coat of arms Estrada family (Picón, Spain)
Coat of arms of the Estrada family preserved in the center of the small town of Picón (Ciudad Real, Spain). This coat of arms belonged to Luis Alfonso de Estrada, son of Alonso de Estrada (Governor of New Spain), who bought the town of Picón from King Felipe II in 1564. A year later, Luis Alfonso de Estrada ordered the construction of the City Hall building of this town, of which a good part is still preserved. We only know two examples of coats of arms in relief of the Estrada family. The first is located in the church of San Pedro in Ciudad Real and the second is this one, preserved in a building in Picón. To know more about this family: V. M. Diffusely charged polymeric zwitterions as loosely hydrated marine antifouling coatings
<p>This dataset accompanies the article "Diffusely Charged Polymeric Zwitterions as Loosely Hydrated Marine Antifouling Coatings" by Shawn D. Mengel, Wen Guo, Guangyao Wu, John A. Finlay, Peter Allen, Anthony S. Clare, Riddhiman Medhi, Zhan Chen, Christopher K. Ober, and Rachel A. Segalman in Langmuir in 2023 (LINK). The article demonstrates that more diffusely charged polymeric zwitterions have improved surface hydration, which correlates with improved fouling resistance to <em>Ulva linza</em>. This dataset contains the necessary experimental data to reproduce the main text and supporting figures. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, vibrational sum frequency generation spectra, marine fouling assays, and contact angle measurements are included.</p>
Webinar: Towards bio-based paints and coatings – Fundamentals and an introduction to the PERFECOAT project
<p>The European paints and coatings market is projected to grow from USD 37.2 billion in 2023 to USD 41.6 billion by 2028 (Markets and Markets, 2023). While a majority of currently used ingredients are fossil-based, prospects show an increasing demand for sustainable paints and coatings, especially in the professional and DIY (Do it yourself) industries. To enable a smooth transition from fossil to sustainable products, the industry is in desperate need for high performance bio-based solutions especially for bio-polymers and lipids, binders, fillers, pigments and additives like functional nanomaterials. These major component groups combined account for nearly 70% of the ingredients (American Coatings Association, 2023). In the first two years of examination, the EU funded research project PERFECOAT successfully developed innovative bio-based solutions, from bio-waste and agricultural residues. These will be tested in the formulation of three use-cases: UV-curable clear coatings for wood, waterborne trim paints for DIY, and waterborne wall paints.</p> <p>At this project stage, the partners successfully developed bio-based polymers and lipids, binders, fillers, fungal pigments and dyes, as well as different additives like functional nanomaterials. These cover a variety of performance requirements like paint texture and grip, clarity, flexibility, UV resistance (no yellowing) as well as drying and curing time. </p> <p>In the first webinar “Towards bio-based paints and coatings – Fundamentals and an introduction to the PERFECOAT project” international experts will introduce the basics of paint and coatings formulation and address the potential of bio-based solutions in this field. A historic overview will address paint and coating applications and discuss the performance requirements for newly developed solutions and challenges in novel applications.</p> <p>Curious? Optical properties of mineral dust aerosols with non-absorptive coating: a numerical investigation
<p>Model data for optical calculations of non-absorptive coated mineral dust aerosol</p> <p>This repository provides data used for plots in a manuscript submitted to Optics Express. The folder contains optical data from calculations performed with the T-matrix code. The subdirectory aspect ratio contains results for eleven aspect ratios with the coating ratio equal to 0.5 stored in respective directories. The directory coating ratio contains results for eleven coating ratios with an aspect ratio of 1.37. The directory naming of folders within the subdirectories derives from the parameter choice as indicated in the manuscript.</p>
Vesicles clustering around Wdr35-/- cilia lack electron dense decorations although electron-dense clathrin coated vesicles are still observed budding from the mutant plasma membrane (Figure 7- source data 1)
<p>Intraflagellar transport (IFT) is a highly conserved mechanism for motor-driven transport of cargo within cilia, but how this cargo is selectively transported to cilia is unclear. WDR35/IFT121 is a component of the IFT-A complex best known for its role in ciliary retrograde transport. In the absence of WDR35, small mutant cilia form but fail to enrich in diverse classes of ciliary membrane proteins. In <i>Wdr35 </i>mouse mutants, the non-core IFT-A components are degraded and core components accumulate at the ciliary base. We reveal deep sequence homology of WDR35 and other IFT-A subunits to α and ß' COPI coatomer subunits, and demonstrate an accumulation of 'coat-less' vesicles which fail to fuse with <i>Wdr35 </i>mutant cilia. We determine that recombinant non-core IFT-As can bind directly to<u> </u>lipids and provide the first <i>in-situ</i> evidence of a novel coat function for WDR35, likely with other IFT-A proteins, in delivering ciliary membrane cargo necessary for cilia elongation.</p>

<p>Reduced neutron reflectometry (NR) data associated with the study "The evolution of surface structure during atmospheric ageing of nano-scale coatings of an organic surfactant aerosol proxy" by Milsom et al.. One folder contains the raw data for fitted parameters obtained from NR curves and supporting figure 3 in the study. The other contains a set of sub-folders which have reduced NR data along with python scripts which were used to create and fit the interfacial model to the data. Fitting bounds for each parameter are found in these scripts. </p>

Differential Ablation of Organic Coatings from Micrometeoroids Simulated in the Laboratory
<p>The presented data are for an article entitled "Differential Ablation of Organic Coatings from Micrometeoroids Simulated in the Laboratory" that has been submitted for publication to <em>Journal of Geophysical Research - Planets</em>. </p> <p>The file ppy_ablation_data.csv contains the initial mass and initial velocity for each of the 22 PPy-coated olivine dust particle, <br> the gas target pressure, and the charges (in number of electrons) collected by the 16 charge collectors inside the gas target. <br> The value in column "Included" is set to "True" if the particle was among the 18 particles used to calculate charge yields and to fit the model in the article. File Impact_event.zip contains the final impact signals for each of the 22 particles. The impact signals are presented as voltage signals vs. time in CSV format. The units for all data are indicated in the column name. </p> <p> </p>
Selectivity improvement of polysulfone-zeolite templated carbon membrane by annealing and coating treatment for CO2/CH4 and H2/CH4 separation
<p>Natural gas, which majorly consists of methane (CH4), is a renewable energy source widely used as fuel, as well as hydrogen (H2). However, in its production process of each gas containing other impurity gasses. Therefore, membrane technology is needed to separate the gasses from the impurities. Mixed Matrix Membrane (MMM) is a more promising membrane compared to the others. Zeolite Templated Carbon-based MMM offers a good separation performance because of ZTC's large surface area and well-defined pore structure. However, the interfacial void in MMM is challenging to be prevented, which contributes to the reduced separation performance. This study aims to enhance separation performance by modifying membrane surfaces using various methods. MMM PSF/ZTC modified by annealing at 120, 150, and 190 °C; coating using 0.01, 0.03, and 0.05 mol tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS); and both combinations annealing at 190 °C and coating using 0.03 mol TMOS. MMM PSF/ZTC was successfully significantly improved CO2/CH4 selectivity by both combinations of annealed at 190 °C and coated 0.03 mol TMOS from 1.37 to 5.90 (331%) and H2/CH4 selectivity by coating with 0.03 mol TMOS from 4.58 to 65.76 (1378%). The enhancement of selectivity was due to structural changes of the membrane that was denser and smoother, which SEM and AFM observed. In this study, annealing and coating treatment are the methods that can use for improving the polymer matrix and filler particle adhesion.</p>
