Frost resistance of alkali-activated concrete with different compositions – parametric study

<p><span>Alkali-Activated Materials (AAM) are often considered to be very durable and also frost-resistant. However, there are also contrary experiences. This paper focuses on the frost resistance of AAMs of different compositions &ndash; different amounts of activator and different ratios between alkali (R2O) and silicon oxide content. Sodium water glass was used as the activator and its silicate modulus was modified by the addition of KOH. The R2O content was 4 -10 % and the R2O/SiO2 weight ratio was 33/67 (water glass only) up to 100/0 (KOH only). The frost resistance index was tested at the ages of 28, 91 and 365 days. Specimens were cured in foil or water and comparative specimens were also stored in foil or water. </span><span>The results obtained are inconclusive. Firstly, when the reference specimens are stored in water, their bending strength decreases. This means that the frost resistance index is dependent on the use of the reference specimens &ndash; better results of frost resistance index are obtained for water-cured beams as reference specimens as they show lower strengths. The composition has a marginal effect on the frost resistance. Longer curing times also do not increase frost resistance.</span></p>

Database on 16 reinforced concrete walls with lap splices and 8 reference units with continuous reinforcement (V2 models included)

<p>Recent post-earthquake missions have shown that both old and code-compliant reinforced concrete wall buildings can experience critical damage due to lap splices, which led to a recent surge in experimental tests of walls with such constructional detail. Most of the 16 walls with lap splices described in the literature thus far were carried out in the last five years. A database with these wall tests, plus 8 reference unit walls with continuous reinforcement, is herein provided alongside with the shell element models developed in Vector2 to simulate their inelastic F-D response</p> <p><strong>If the experimental data or the models are used, please cite:</strong></p> <p>- J.P. Assessing instantaneous stiffness of cracked reinforced concrete beams based on crack depths

<p>The crack presence changes the shape or size of sections in reinforced concrete beams, and greatly affects the section inertias and the beam stiffness. To assess the instantaneous stiffness of the cracked beams, a method is proposed based on the exact crack depth. The region affected by cracks is determined firstly, and different nonlinear strain distributions are modeled in the effect region to describe the change of concrete strains caused by cracks. The internal force equilibria are adopted to find a solution to the top strain and neutral axis, and according to the solution, the inertias of key sections are calculated to assess the beam stiffness. The proposed method has been validated using experimental results obtained from two-stage tests on five reinforced concrete beams. The dataset&nbsp;stores&nbsp;valuable results calculated by the proposed method.</p>

Hygro-thermo-mechanical model for concrete pavement from an early age to a long-term performance

<p>A new 3D hygro-thermo-mechanical model for a concrete pavement slab is formulated, capturing its behavior from casting to long-term drying. The model includes a microprestress-solidification viscoelastic model for concrete ageing creep. Calibrations and validations are based on lab experiments and a four year continuous monitoring of a real highway slab. The results show that slab drying leads to the highest principal tensile stress on the surface as high as 3.5 MPa. Simulated temperature cycles and traffic loading yield smaller stresses. In this regard, concrete crack resistance during drying should be considered in material and structural design.</p>
