Nant Yr Eira Bronze Age Copper Mine, Powys

Nant Yr Eira is a remote lead and copper mine high on the slopes of Plynlimon in west Montgomeryshire. The earliest working here is the deep open-cut (95 metres long by 6 metres wide and 7 metres deep) on the upper section of the stream which mined a vein of copper ore. Trench excavations across the old spoil tips lining the open-cut revealed broken hammer stones, charcoal and antler pick fragments indicating mining in the Bronze Age between 2000 and 1500 BC. Lower down the hillside can be seen the remains of the Snowbrook Lead Mine (1858 - 87) with a single ore bin and sorting platform and a stone tramway embankment leading to the head of the prominent wheel pit of the crusher house. Below the crusher house there is a formerly roofed over platform and down by the stream there are buddle and jigger processing tips with remains of the jigger platforms and circular buddles. On the slope above the crusher house are grass covered tips leading from the main shaft and a possible barrack and office building. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

RK17 A00032 Copper tube (Neck)

RK17 A00032 is a section of copper tube found during the archaeological excavation of the Rooswijk in 2017. In 2017 and 2018, the shipwreck of the Rooswijk, a 300 year old Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship which sank on the treacherous Goodwin Sands in January 1740 off the coast of England, was excavated by an international team of maritime archaeologists. Post-excavation work began straight after each excavation campaign, focusing on ex-situ research, the conservation and analysis of the artefacts and will continue until the end of the project. Naquada Culture Copper Harpoon

A double barbed harpoon is one of the hallmarks of the Naqada culture. Such items are known from both - Upper and Lower Egypt. Copper harpoons were probably not only a nilothic game tools but also a weapon and social status marker. Such items are frequently found in the graves dated to Naqada III culture. Presented model is based on the published harpoons from various sites depicting features characteristic for items dated to Naqada IIIC2 such as more geometric form and straight lines of the cutting edges. 3D model was made as a part of the project financed under the National Science Center of Poland grant UMO-2014/15/N/HS3/01144 "The comparative analyses of Early Bronze Age Egyptian and Southern Levantine copper tools including the influences from the Arabian Peninsula and Mesopotamia region". Parys Mountain Copper Mines

LiDAR derived view of the Parys Copper Mines on Parys Mountain, Anglesey. The hillside was mined initially in the Early Bronze Age period c. 3500 BC. Copper ingots and evidence of smelting activity from the Roman period have been found on the northern side of the hill. The main period of extraction took place from 1768 when a near surface body of copper ore was located in what came to be known as The Great Lode. Shallow surface workings developed downward into the huge opencast pits visible now including The Great Opencast and the Mona opencast. Later shafts explored much deeper veins until the mine ceased production in 1904. Anglesey Mining plc are currently considering re-starting mining operations if extraction becomes financially viable. This was the largest copper mine in Europe during the 1780's and the ore was smelted in Lancashire & South Wales. Role of laser wobbling welding parameters in dissimilar welding of aluminum and copper alloys: general preliminary process window.

<p>This database explores a wide range of process parameters concerning laser welding of aluminum and copper 0.3 mm thick foils in lap configuration. In particular, this application involves wobbling technique as a dynamic beam shaping for enhancing the formation of a correct interface width in this kind of welding. Given different values of laser power, wobbling tangential speed and wobbling diameter, the results are expressed in terms of weld bead width at the face of the weld bead, weld bead width at the interface between the two sheets and bead penetration depth in the lower sheet. Some trials gave an excessive penetration so that the specimen was cut in two separate parts after the process. This specific type of dissimilar welding is useful for enhancing "hybrid" characteristics of components, where a trade-off between mechanical and electrical or thermal characteristics is needed.</p>

Data for: Copper ions inhibit pentose phosphate pathway function in Staphylococcus aureus

<p>To gain a better insight of how Cu ions toxify cells, metabolomic analyses were performed in <em>S. aureus</em> strains that lack the described Cu ion detoxification systems (ΔcopBL <em>ΔcopAZ</em>; <em>cop<sup>-</sup></em>). Exposure of the <em>cop<sup>-</sup></em> strain to Cu(II) resulted in an increase in the concentrations of metabolites utilized to synthesize phosphoribosyl diphosphate (PRPP). PRPP is created using the enzyme phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase (Prs) which catalyzes the interconversion of ATP and ribose 5-phosphate to PRPP and AMP. Supplementing growth medium with metabolites requiring PRPP for synthesis improved growth in the presence of Cu(II). A suppressor screen revealed that a strain with a lesion in the gene coding adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (<em>apt</em>) was more resistant to Cu. Apt catalyzes the conversion of adenine with PRPP to AMP. The <em>apt</em> mutant had an increased pool of adenine suggesting that the PRPP pool was being redirected. Over-production of <em>apt</em>, or alternate enzymes that utilize PRPP, increased sensitivity to Cu(II). Increasing or decreasing expression of <em>prs</em> resulted in decreased and increased sensitivity to growth in the presence of Cu(II), respectively. We demonstrate that Prs is inhibited by Cu ions <em>in</em> <em>vivo</em> and <em>in vitro</em> and that treatment of cells with Cu(II) results in decreased PRPP levels. Lastly, we establish that <em>S. aureus</em> that lacks the ability to remove Cu ions from the cytosol is defective in colonizing the airway in a murine model of acute pneumonia, as well as the skin. The data presented are consistent with a model wherein Cu ions inhibits pentose phosphate pathway function and are used by the immune system to prevent<em> S. aureus</em> infections.</p>
