Synthetic dataset from - Bar et al., Sifting through the haystack - efficiently finding rare behaviors in large-scale datasets, WACV 2025

<p>This is a synthetic dataset emulating pose estimation data, introduced in the associated paper.&nbsp;</p> <p>Briefly, each sample in the dataset is a sequence of 5-keypoints with 9 timesteps. Movement of each keypoint in time is determined by a sinus with some amplitude A and some frequency f, this is loosely inspired by larval zebrafish swimming movement.&nbsp;<br>There are two types of behaviors - a common behavior (aka forming the majority of the samples in the dataset) where the frequency of the sinus is larger than the amplitude, and a rare one where the amplitude is larger than the frequency.&nbsp;<br>We vary the similarity between the rare and common behaviors by relaxing the standard deviation of the gaussian from which we draw these movement parameters (behavior similarity, sd= [0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 5]). We also test different levels of data imbalance, varying the frequency of the rare behavior (rarity=[1.5%,5%,12%,24%]).&nbsp;</p> <p>Thus we created 16 datasets with all possible combinations.</p> <p>The data generation code will become available in our code repository: https://github.com/shir3bar/SiftingTheHaystack</p> <p>The data was used to create a controlled experimental sandbox in which we could test our pipeline for detecting rare behaviors. Efficient Techniques for Formal Verification of C Programs: SV-COMP 2022 dataset

<p>This dataset contains the data on the last set of pre-run benchmarks of the tool Theta on SV-COMP 2022. The benchmarks were executed by the SV-COMP 2022 organizers, but a short evaluation of these are added in the Bachelor&#39;s&nbsp;Thesis with the title&nbsp;Efficient Techniques for Formal Verification of C programs.</p> <p>This dataset archives these benchmark results so they are always available to the reader&#39;s of this&nbsp;thesis.</p> <p>The html and csv files are generated with the table-generator utility of Benchexec from the .xml.bz2 files. One contains the results of the Concurrency Safety category only, while the other contains all categories.</p>

Using convolutional neural networks to efficiently extract immense phenological data from community science images

<p>Community science image libraries offer a massive, but largely untapped, source of observational data for phenological research. The iNaturalist platform offers a particularly rich archive, containing more than 49 million verifiable, georeferenced, open access images, encompassing seven continents and over 278,000 species. A critical limitation preventing scientists from taking full advantage of this rich data source is labor. Each image must be manually inspected and categorized by phenophase, which is both time-intensive and costly. Consequently, researchers may only be able to use a subset of the total number of images available in the database. While iNaturalist has the potential to yield enough data for high-resolution and spatially extensive studies, it requires more efficient tools for phenological data extraction. A promising solution is automation of the image annotation process using deep learning. Recent innovations in deep learning have made these open-source tools accessible to a general research audience. However, it is unknown whether deep learning tools can accurately and efficiently annotate phenophases in community science images. Here, we train a convolutional neural network (CNN) to annotate images of Alliaria petiolata into distinct phenophases from iNaturalist and compare the performance of the model with non-expert human annotators. We demonstrate that researchers can successfully employ deep learning techniques to extract phenological information from community science images. A CNN classified two-stage phenology (flowering and non-flowering) with 95.9% accuracy and classified four-stage phenology (vegetative, budding, flowering, and fruiting) with 86.4% accuracy. The overall accuracy of the CNN did not differ from humans (p = 0.383), although performance varied across phenophases. We found that a primary challenge of using deep learning for image annotation was not related to the model itself, but instead in the quality of the community science images. Up to 4% of A. petiolata images in iNaturalist were taken from an improper distance, were physically manipulated, or were digitally altered, which limited both human and machine annotators in accurately classifying phenology. Thus, we provide a list of photography guidelines that could be included in community science platforms to inform community scientists in the best practices for creating images that facilitate phenological analysis.</p>

Standardization of Methodology of Light-to-Heat Conversion Efficiency Determination for Colloidal Nanoheaters

<p>Localized photothermal therapy (PTT) has been demonstrated to be a promising method of combating cancer, that additionally synergistically enhances other treatment modalities such as photodynamic therapy or chemotherapy. PTT exploits nanoparticles (called nanoheaters), that upon proper biofunctionalization may target cancerous tissues, and under light stimulation may convert the energy of photons to heat, leading to local overheating and treatment of cancerous cells. Despite extensive work, there is, however, no agreement on how to accurately and quantitatively compare light-to-heat conversion efficiency (&eta;Q) and rank the nanoheating performances of various groups of nanomaterials. This disagreement is highly problematic because the obtained &eta;Q values, measured with various methods, differ significantly for similar nanomaterials. In this work, we experimentally review existing optical setups, methods, and physical models used to evaluate &eta;Q. In order to draw a binding conclusion, we cross-check and critically evaluate the same Au@SiO2 sample in various experimental conditions. This critical study let us additionally compare and understand the influence of the other experimental factors, such as stirring, data recording and analysis, and assumptions on the effective mass of the system, in order to determine &eta;Q in a most straightforward and reproducible way. Our goal is therefore to contribute to the understanding, standardization, and reliable evaluation of &eta;Q measurements, aiming to accurately rank various nanoheater platforms.</p>

Morphological adaptations linked to flight efficiency and aerial lifestyle determine natal dispersal distance in birds

<p>Natal dispersal—the movement from birthplace to breeding location—is often considered the most significant dispersal event in an animal's lifetime. Natal dispersal distances may be shaped by a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, and remain poorly quantified in most groups, highlighting the need for indices that capture variation in dispersal among species.</p> <p>In birds, it is hypothesized that dispersal distance can be predicted by flight efficiency, which can be estimated using wing morphology. However, the use of morphological indices to predict dispersal remains contentious and the mechanistic links between flight efficiency and natal dispersal are unclear.</p> <p>Here, we use phylogenetic comparative models to test whether hand-wing index (HWI, a morphological proxy for wing aspect ratio) predicts natal dispersal distance across a global sample of 114 bird species. In addition, we assess whether HWI is correlated with flight usage in foraging and daily routines.</p> <p>We find that HWI is a strong predictor of both natal dispersal distance and a more aerial lifestyle.</p> <p>Our results support the use of HWI as a valid proxy for relative natal dispersal distance, and also suggest that evolutionary adaptation to aerial lifestyles is a major factor connecting flight efficiency with patterns of natal dispersal.</p>

Effects of season length and uniparental care efficiency on the evolution of parental care

<p>Parental care patterns differ enormously among and even within species. In Chinese penduline tits (<em>Remiz pendulinus</em>), for example, biparental care, female-only care, male-only care, and biparental desertion all occur in the same population; moreover, the distribution of care patterns differs systematically between populations. By means of an individual-based model, we show that such diversity can readily evolve. We report five main findings. First, under a broad range of parameters, different care patterns (e.g. male care and biparental care) coexist at equilibrium. Second, for many parameters, alternative evolutionary outcomes are possible; this can explain differences in care patterns across populations. Third, rapid evolutionary transitions can occur between alternative equilibria; this can explain the often-reported evolutionary lability of parental care patterns. Fourth, season length has a strong but non-monotonic effect on the evolved care patterns. Fifth, when uniparental care efficiency is low, biparental care tends to evolve; however, in many scenarios uniparental care is still common at equilibrium. Our study sheds new light on Triver's hypothesis that the sex with the highest pre-zygotic investment is predestined to invest a lot post-zygotically as well. We also discuss the implications of climate change, which simultaneously affects season length and efficiency of parental care.</p>
