Understanding the Building Blocks of Accountability in Software Engineering
<p>In the social and organizational sciences, accountability has been linked to the efficient operation of organizations. However, it has received limited attention in software engineering (SE) research, in spite of its central role in the most popular software development methods (i.e., Scrum). In this article, we seek to explore the mechanisms of accountability in SE environments and investigate the factors that foster software engineers' individual accountability within their teams through an interview study with 12 people. Our findings recognize two primary forms of accountability shaping software engineers individual senses of accountability: \emph{institutionalized} and \emph{grassroots}. While the former is directed by formal processes and mechanisms, like performance reviews, grassroots accountability arises organically within teams, driven by factors such as peers' expectations and intrinsic motivation. This organic form cultivates a shared sense of collective responsibility, emanating from shared team standards and individual engineers' inner commitment to their personal, professional values, and self-set standards. While institutionalized accountability relies on traditional "carrot and stick" approaches, such as financial incentives or denial of promotions, grassroots accountability operates on reciprocity with peers and intrinsic motivations, like maintaining one's reputation in the team.</p>

Quantitative results of the analysis of relevant components of artificial bilayered substitutes developed by tissue engineering
<p>This dataset corresponds to the quantification results carried out for artificial bilayered substitutes developed by tissue engineering and control tissues analyzed in the manuscript entitled "<span>Spatiotemporal characterization of extracellular matrix maturation in human artificial stromal-epithelial tissue substitutes</span>". Tissue engineering techniques offer new strategies to understand complex processes in a controlled and reproducible system. In this study, we generated bilayered human tissue substitutes consisting of a cellular connective tissue with a suprajacent epithelium (full-thickness stromal-epithelial substitutes or SESS), and human tissue substitutes with an epithelial layer generated on top of an acellular biomaterial (epithelial substitutes or ESS). Both types of artificial tissues were studied at sequential time periods to analyze the maturation process of the extracellular matrix (ECM) using histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. Results showed that both models were able to exhibit a partial development of the epithelial layer. ESS cells showed active proliferation, positive expression of KRT5 and low expression of differentiation markers, whereas SESS epithelium showed higher differentiation levels, with a progressive positive expression of KRT10 and claudin, although the differentiation levels of control native tissues were not reached. Despite the typical rete-ridges and papillae of native tissues were not found, stromal cells in SESS tended to accumulate and actively synthetize ECM components such as collagens and proteoglycans in the stromal area in direct contact with the epithelium (Z1 zone), whereas these components were very scarce in ESS. Regarding the basement membrane (BM), ESS showed a partially-differentiated structure containing fibronectin-1 (FN1) and perlecan (HSPG2), although the PAS staining signal was significantly lower than control native tissues. However, SESS showed higher BM differentiation, with positive expression of FN1, HSPG2, nidogen 1 (NID1), chondroitin-6-sulfate proteoglycans (CH6S), agrin (AGRN), and collagens types IV (COL-IV) and VII (COL-VII), although this structure was negative for lumican (LUM). These results confirm the relevance of epithelial-stromal interaction for ECM development and differentiation, especially regarding BM components, and suggest the usefulness of bilayered artificial tissue substitutes to reproduce ex vivo the ECM maturation and development process of human tissues. The original data obtained for the quantitative analyses of each component are shown in this dataset.</p> <p> </p>

Unveiling Hurdles in Software Engineering Education: The Role of Learning Management Systems
<p>Learning management systems (LMSs) are established tools in higher education, especially in the field of software engineering (SE). The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic further amplified the utilization of these systems, which necessitated their integration into educational curricula for both lecturers and students. However, adopting LMSs within SE education has presented distinctive challenges impeding their seamless incorporation into the courses. This paper aims to scrutinize the challenges and requirements encountered by professors, lecturers, and students in the domain of SE education when using LMSs. We conducted an empirical study that included (i) a survey with 47 professors/lecturers and 133 students, (ii) an analysis of the ensuing data, and (iii) 18 additional interviews conducted with professors and lecturers to delve into nuanced variations in viewpoints. The findings derived from our study reveal that the challenges and requirements pertaining to LMSs are rather specific depending on the scope and size of the respective courses. Nevertheless, many participants have a consensus on numerous challenges and requirements for improving certain features of LMSs in order to improve their usage in SE education. The findings are valuable for advancing research and development in the field of LMSs and provide guidance for lecturers in SE education.</p>
ChatGPT's Aptitude in Utilizing UML Diagrams for Software Engineering Exercise Generation
<p>The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies into educational settings has paved the way for innovative teaching and learning approaches. In Software Engineering (SE) education, using Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams is a fundamental teaching element for understanding complex software systems. This research addresses the ability of ChatGPT to utilize UML class and sequence diagrams for creating SE modeling exercises. We use ChatGPT to generate exercises based on the information from uploaded UML diagrams by analyzing textual UML representations such as Mermaid and graphical diagrams. The research explores ChatGPT's ability to synthesize UML-specific information from class and sequence diagrams, enabling the generation of various exercises tailored to strengthen conceptual understanding and practical application. Furthermore, we investigate generating graphical UML class and sequence diagrams based on natural language as input. By bridging the gap between AI-driven natural language understanding and the comprehension of UML diagrams, this study highlights the potential of ChatGPT to improve SE education. Our concise findings address educators, practitioners, and other researchers engaged in the field of SE education with a special focus on UML.</p>

Direct Measurement of Learning Outcomes in Engineering Programs: A Proposal for Nine Standardized Scales
<p>This database presents the results of nine different scales aimed at directly evaluating learning outcomes as generic attributes in engineering programs, as defined by the Washington Accord and the International Alliance of Engineering. Data was collected at a higher education institution focused on engineering and technology as part of quality assurance processes. Each scale features a distinct number of indicators. The data correspond to the following scales: AC (Lifelong Learning), AF (Project Management and Finance), AP (Problem Analysis), DI (Design/Development of Solutions), EE (Ethics), HC (Communication), HI (Tool Usage), IN (Investigation), and TE (Individual and Collaborative Teamwork).</p>

1964 flamenca negra guitar from Faustino Conde - documentation and reverse engineered construction plans
<p>This data set documents a specific guitar made by Faustino Conde in Madrid in 1964.<br>(Comment: Felipe Conde identified the handwriting of Mariano Conde in the "Conde" signature on the label inside, the signature of his father. This does not necessarily mean that the guitar was built by Mariano, since experts believe, that it was the brother Faustino who built these kind of special guitars, as it has also been the case for the flamenca negra guitars).</p> <p>The guitar is a so-called flamenca negra, a flamenco guitar with rosewood used for rib and back plate.<br>(Errata: the guitar was sold as a flamenca negra, and experts in Granada also believed it is a flamenca negra. However, Felipe Conde now inspected the guitar and states that the instrument has been built as a classical guitar with only some changes in the setup that might lead to other conclusions. The guitar is original. Also the top and the mechanics. Experts in Granada, while inspecting the varnish, believed that the top plate might have been modified. However, Felipe Conde (*1959) states that the guitar is original. This also includes the fretboard. The fretboard height is declining towards the body and this caused questions by Granadian guitar makers. However, in the workshop of the Conde family several inspected guitars from the 50s through the 70s revealed a likewise decline of the height.<br>2. Felipe Conde inspected the guitar. He believes that the guitar is an experimental guitar and that it has been built as a customized guitar for a highly professional musician. But there are no records on this.<br>3. The setup of the guitar has been modified. The height of the bridge is lowered where the bone sits. This can be inspected in the construction plan. It is not known whether this was done by Conde himself or by someone else in an aftermath. Experts in Granada but also members of the Conde family state that the present setup is perfect.</p>

ADAPTING SYSTEMS ENGINEERING TO EVALUATE TECH STARTUPS: AN INNOVATIVE FRAMEWORK BASED ON OMG ESSENCE
<p>The adaptation of system engineering to evaluate technical startups through an innovative framework based on the OMG Essence standard is a modern approach to simplify the process of analyzing and managing startups at various stages of their development. In this study, a universal framework was proposed that allows evaluating technical startups from the point of view of system engineering. This approach takes into account key aspects of startup development, such as requirements, stakeholders, technology, and team, which makes it an important tool for evaluating innovative projects.</p> <p>The main purpose of the proposed framework is to apply the principles of systems engineering to the evaluation of startups, focusing on technical aspects such as system architecture, integration capabilities, and the ability of the team to solve complex tasks. Traditional methods of evaluating startups, often focusing on business aspects, may not always take into account all the technical difficulties and risks that arise when developing software products. The OMG Essence-based framework fills this gap by providing a more comprehensive tool for analyzing and managing startup development.</p> <p>OMG Essence, as a standardized method, acts as a basis for formalizing practices and facilitating interaction between various project participants. The framework based on it offers the possibility of modular adaptation, which allows you to evaluate startups regardless of their complexity and current stage of development. An important feature of OMG Essence is the ability to integrate with other methodologies, which makes it universal for various fields. The application of this standard in the evaluation of startups allows you to obtain more objective results and improve the decision-making process.</p>
