Simulations of the NGC-5466 tidal stream in a Galactic-like potential, with and without dwarf galaxies included

<p>A mock stream of NGC-5466&nbsp;simulated with the&nbsp;particle-spray code `galpy.df.streamspraydf`, which is an implementation of the Fardal et al 2015 mock stream generation method.&nbsp;The current position and velocity of the progenitor globular&nbsp;cluster is from Vasiliev et al&nbsp;2019. The progenitor&#39;s orbit is&nbsp;back-integrated 5 Gyr in a `galpy.potential.MWPotential2014` potential&nbsp;then&nbsp;forward integrated, forming the tidal tails. The file with&nbsp;the name&nbsp;&#39;dwarfgalaxy&#39; includes the effects of dwarf galaxies&nbsp;on the stream. <p>Honourable mention in the 2022 IAU OAE Astrophotography Contest, category Still images of celestial patterns.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Taken from the south of Iraq in January 2022, this image shows a clear sky over one of the many ancient monuments in the region which looks like a Babylonian ziggurat. The Sumerians had invented these mountain-like buildings even before the invention of script; the earliest ziggurats appear around 4000 years before the common era. They look like the frustum of a pyramid and in Babylonian times often had temples on top. Next to the stairs of the ziggurat are the constellations of the southernmost part of the Zodiac, also invented in Babylon. Today, we call them Capricorn (left, with a planet in it) and Sagittarius, whose brightest stars form the asterism of the Teapot. For the Babylonians, Sagittarius was the god Pabilsang, the city god of Larak and a god of agriculture and war. He was also the husband of the mighty goddess of medicine, Gula, and his iconography is a hybrid creature holding a bow and arrow: a male human torso and head attached to the body of a horse with four legs, two gigantic wings and two tails &mdash; a horse tail and a scorpion tail. Such a creature did not exist in Greek mythology, so the Greeks reduced it to something they knew, a centaur holding a bow and arrow. This picture still did not make sense in Greek culture because centaurs were considered wild and cruel, and not intelligent enough to use a bow and arrow. Therefore, there was another Greek figure that existed simultaneously: a man with hooves instead of feet at the ends of his legs, a satyr, but this figure vanished in Roman times.&nbsp;</p> <p>Capricornus is one of the most stable foreign creatures in the Zodiac and has been unchanged over millennia. It is depicted as a hybrid creature with the front part of a goat and the back part of a fish. This so-called Goat-Fish constellation has been recognised since the earliest writings of astronomy in Babylon. In Babylonian religion it is a good-natured, benevolent demon that protects humans, supports all healing processes and accompanies the god of wisdom and witchcraft. The Greeks simply adopted it and invented a saga for it. In Roman times, it became tremendously famous because emperor Augustus of Rome used it as his personal symbol, also imprinting it on coins and other political propaganda tools.</p> <p>In Sagittarius, there is also the bright bulge of the Milky Way. The tar file expands into the following directories:</p> <p>JADES-GS-z10-0/</p> <p>JADES-GS-z11-0/</p> <p>JADES-GS-z12-0/</p> <p>JADES-GS-z13-0/</p> <p>Each directory contains the F090W, F115W, F150W, F200W, F277W, F335M, F356W, F410M, and F444W FITS images of the galaxies. The FITS headers contain information about the observations, the units of the data, and the locations of the objects on the sky.</p>

Training data for 'Genome annotation with Funannotate' tutorial (Galaxy Training Material)

<p>The data provided here are part of a Galaxy Training Network tutorial for genome annotation with funannotate.</p> <p>Genome was assembled following the GTN Flye assembly tutorial, then masked with RepeatMasker.</p> <p>RNASeq data: SRR8534859 reads were mapped to the genome using STAR (toolshed.g2.bx.psu.edu/repos/iuc/rgrnastar/rna_star/2.7.8a+galaxy0), then the bam was downsampled (10% with toolshed.g2.bx.psu.edu/repos/devteam/picard/picard_DownsampleSam/2.18.2.1) to reduce the size of the dataset. Fastq files were then extracted from the resulting bam file (toolshed.g2.bx.psu.edu/repos/devteam/picard/picard_SamToFastq/2.18.2.1).</p> <p>SwissProt_subset.fasta is a subset of SwissProt proteins that are known to have some similarity with the genome (found using Diamond against the genome, then extracting sequences matching with e-value &lt; 0.0001).</p>

Radio Galaxy Zoo: Tagging Radio Subjects using Text

<p>RadioTalk is a communication platform that enabled members of the Radio Galaxy Zoo (RGZ) citizen science project to engage in discussion threads and provide further descriptions of the radio subjects they were observing in the form of tags and comments. It contains a wealth of auxiliary information which is useful for the morphology identification of complex and extended radio sources. In this paper, we present this new dataset, and for the first time in radio astronomy, we combine text and images to automatically classify radio galaxies using a multi-modal learning approach. We found incorporating text features improved classification performance which demonstrates that text annotations are rare but valuable sources of information for classifying astronomical sources, and suggests the importance of exploiting multi-modal information in future citizen science projects. We also discovered over 10,000 new radio sources beyond the RGZ-DR1 catalogue in this dataset.</p>

Spatially resolved mock observations of stellar kinematics: full radiative transfer treatment of the simulated galaxies of the Auriga project

<p>We present realistic mock spectroscopic observations for state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations, using&nbsp;high spectral resolution stellar population models (FSPS) and full radiative transfer treatment with SKIRT. The dataset contains IFS-like spectroscopy of the stellar continuum for 10 (of the 30) galaxies in the Auriga Project at z=0. One galaxy at z=0.8 (Au 6) and another at z=3 (Au 29).</p>

Online Data: Evolution of dusty quiescent galaxies over the last six billion years from the hCOSMOS survey

<p>The dataset contains the physical and structural parameters of&nbsp;545&nbsp;dusty quiescent&nbsp;galaxies presented in&nbsp;Donevski et al. (2023, A&amp;A accepted,&nbsp;arXiv:2304.05842). The galaxies are observed at intermediate redshifts (0.1 &lt; z &lt; 0.6) as part of the hCOSMOS spectroscopic survey. The dataset contains the physical parameters (redshift, D4000, gas-phase metallicities) estimated from optical spectra, as well as SED-derived&nbsp;specific dust masses and stellar masses.&nbsp;</p>
