Occupational Hazards of Indian Shrimp Farm Workers

<p>The paper reviews a range of global aquaculture health and safety literature to inform and contribute to the development of a socio-economic profile of Indian shrimp farm workers including the occupational hazards and injuries they face. In addition, sixty shrimp farm workers were interviewed from each of the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. The study revealed that all shrimp farm workers were male, 58% were migrants, and ages ranged from 23-53 years with work experience of 5-24 years. Few workers (14%) had no formal schooling and many had secondary level education. Reported physical hazards were high (93%) followed by biological (82%), chemical (77%), ergonomic (71%) and psycho-social (71%) hazards. The majority of physical injuries reported related to slips, falls and cuts (51%), electric shocks (44%), sunburn (41%), dehydration/headaches (40%) and fractures (27%). Approximately 30 to 39% had some chemical injury with skin infections/breathing problems. Indian shrimp farm workers face similar occupational hazards and injuries to shrimp farm workers in other countries. The occupational health and safety of shrimp farm workers should be integrated into the concept of &lsquo;One Health&rsquo; to ensure aquaculture sustainability and safe, meaningful and good quality employment to workers. &nbsp;</p>

Regional and global climate risks for reef corals: incorporating species-specific vulnerability and exposure to climate hazards

<p>Climate change is driving rapid and widespread erosion of the environmental conditions that formerly supported species persistence. Existing projections of climate change typically focus on forecasts of acute environmental anomalies and global extinction risks. The current projections also frequently consider all species within a broad taxonomic group together without differentiating species-specific patterns. Consequently, we still know little about the explicit dimensions of climate risk (i.e., species-specific vulnerability, exposure and hazard) that are vital for predicting future biodiversity responses (e.g., adaptation, migration) and developing management and conservation strategies. Here, we use reef corals as model organisms (n = 741 species) to project the extent of regional and global climate risks of marine organisms into the future. We characterise species-specific vulnerability based on the global geographic range and historical environmental conditions (1900–1994) of each coral species within their ranges and quantify the projected exposure to climate hazard beyond the historical conditions as climate risk. We show that many coral species will experience a complete loss of pre-modern climate analogs at the regional scale and across their entire distributional ranges, and such exposure to hazardous conditions is predicted to pose substantial regional and global climate risks to reef corals. Although high-latitude regions may provide climate refugia for some tropical corals until the mid-21st century, they will not become a universal haven for all corals. Notably, high-latitude specialists and species with small geographic ranges remain particularly vulnerable as they tend to possess limited capacities to avoid climate risks (e.g., via adaptive and migratory responses). Predicted climate risks are amplified substantially under the SSP5-8.5 compared with the SSP1-2.6 scenario, highlighting the need for stringent emission controls. Our projections of both regional and global climate risks offer unique opportunities to facilitate climate action at spatial scales relevant to conservation and management.</p>

Measurements of Natural Radioactivity and Radiological Hazards Assessment in Some Commercial Ceramic Tiles used in Ethiopia.

<p>Ceramic tile is a widely used decorative building material. The natural radionuclideconcentration ( 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K) of ceramic wall and floor tiles typically used in Ethiopia was determined using an HPG detector. The study&amp;#39;s goals are to determine the activity concentration of ceramic tiles as well as evaluate their health-related effects. The average activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K were 68.06 &plusmn; 2.07 Bq kg -1 , 131.19 &plusmn; 3.82 Bq kg -1 , and 802.04 &plusmn; 23.41 Bq kg -1 , respectively, which was found to be greater than the global mean. The calculated average value of Raeq was &amp;lt; 370 Bq kg -1 , which is the limiting dose recommended for bulk medium. In addition, the related radiological hazard metrics, such as absorbed dose, annual effective dose equivalent, excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR), internal (H in ) and external (H ex ) hazard indexes, gamma index (I &gamma; ), and alpha index (I &alpha; ), were determined. The findings were contrasted with regional, global,and national legal frameworks as well as other similar studies&amp;#39; findings. According to the results, using the examined ceramic tiles in buildings does not significantly increase radiation exposure.</p>

MYRIAD – Hazard Event Sets (MYRIAD-HES)

Resource selection by New York City deer reveals the effective interface between wildlife, zoonotic hazards, and humans

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Although the role of host movement in shaping infectious disease dynamics is widely acknowledged, methodological separation between animal movement and disease ecology has prevented researchers from leveraging empirical insights from movement data to advance landscape scale understanding of infectious disease risk. To address this knowledge gap, we examine how movement behavior and resource utilization by white-tailed deer (<em>Odocoileus virginianus</em>) determines blacklegged tick (<em>Ixodes scapularis</em>) distribution, which depend on deer for dispersal in a highly fragmented New York City borough. Multi-scale hierarchical resource selection analysis and movement modeling provide insight into how deer's movements contribute to the risk landscape for human exposure to the Lyme disease vector–<em>I. scapularis</em>. We find deer select highly vegetated and accessible residential properties which support blacklegged tick survival. We conclude the distribution of tick-borne disease risk results from individual resource selection by deer across spatial scales in response to habitat fragmentation and anthropogenic disturbances.</span></p>
