Spin-mixing enhanced proximity effect in aluminum-based superconductor-semiconductor hybrids
<p>In superconducting quantum circuits, aluminum is one of the most widely used materials. It is currently also the superconductor of choice for the development of topological qubits. In this application, however, aluminum-based devices suffer from poor magnetic field compatibility. In this article, we resolve this limitation by showing that adatoms of heavy elements (e.g. platinum) increase the critical field of thin aluminum films by more than a factor of two. Using tunnel junctions, we show that the increased field resilience originates from spin-orbit scattering introduced by Pt. We exploit this property in the context of the superconducting proximity effect in semiconductor-superconductor hybrids, where we show that InSb nanowires strongly coupled to Al/Pt films can maintain superconductivity up to 7 T. The two-electron charging effect, a fundamental requirement for topo- logical quantum computation, is shown to be robust against the presence of heavy adatoms. Additionally, we use non-local spectroscopy in a three-terminal geom- etry to probe the bulk of hybrid devices, showing that it remains free of sub-gap states. Finally, we demonstrate that semiconductor states which are proximi- tized by Al/Pt films maintain their ability to Zeeman-split in an applied magnetic field. Combined with the chemical stability and well-known fabrication routes of aluminum, Al/Pt emerges as the natural successor to Al-based systems and is a compelling alternative to other superconductors, whenever high-field resilience is required. </p> <p> </p>
Colloidal-ALD Grown Hybrid Shells Nucleate via a Ligand–Precursor Complex
<p>Colloidal atomic layer deposition (c-ALD) enables the growth of hybrid organic–inorganic oxide shells with tunable thickness<br> at the nanometer scale around ligand-functionalized inorganic nanoparticles (NPs). This recently developed method has demonstrated improved stability of NPs and of their dispersions, a key requirement for their application.<br> Nevertheless, the mechanism by which the inorganic shells form is still unknown, as is the nature of multiple complex interfaces between the NPs, the organic ligands functionalizing the surface, and the shell. Here, we demonstrate that carboxylate ligands are the key element that enables the synthesis of these core–shell structures. Dynamic nuclear polarization surface-enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (DNP SENS) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) structure calculations shows that the addition of the aluminum organometallic precursor forms a ligand–precursor complex that interacts with the NP surface. This ligand–precursor complex is the first step for the nucleation of the shell and enables its further growth.</p>

Three‐level hybrid modeling for systematic optimization of biocatalytic synthesis: α‐glucosyl glycerol production by enzymatic trans‐glycosylation from sucrose
<p>We provide here the underlying data of the publication "Three‐level hybrid modeling for systematic optimization of biocatalytic synthesis: α‐glucosyl glycerol production by enzymatic trans‐glycosylation from sucrose". Please find the abstract below.</p> <p>Mechanism-based kinetic models are rigorous tools to analyze enzymatic reactions, but their extension to actual conditions of the biocatalytic synthesis can be difficult. Here, we demonstrate (mechanistic-empirical) hybrid modeling for systematic optimization of the sucrose phosphorylase-catalyzed glycosylation of glycerol from sucrose, to synthesize the cosmetic ingredient α-glucosyl glycerol (GG). The empirical model part was developed to capture nonspecific effects of high sucrose concentrations (up to 1.5 M) on microscopic steps of the enzymatic trans-glycosylation mechanism. Based on verified predictions of the enzyme performance under initial rate conditions (Level 1), the hybrid model was expanded by microscopic terms of the reverse reaction to account for the full-time course of GG synthesis (Level 2). Lastly (Level 3), the application of the hybrid model for comprehensive window-of-operation analysis and constrained optimization of the GG production (~250 g/L) was demonstrated. Using two candidate sucrose phosphorylases (from <em>Leuconostoc mesenteroides</em> and <em>Bifidobacterium adolescentis</em>), we reveal the hybrid model as a powerful tool of “process decision making” to guide rational selection of the best-suited enzyme catalyst. Our study exemplifies a closing of the gap between enzyme kinetic models considered for mechanistic research and applicable in technologically relevant reaction conditions; and it highlights the important benefit thus realizable for biocatalytic process development.</p>
Data from: Drastic shift in flowering phenology of F1 hybrids explains the population structure of Imperata cylindrica in Japan
<p>Hybridization is a major source of phenotypic variation and a driving force for evolution. On the other hand, these novel traits can often disrupt adaptive relationships between the parental phenotypes and their environments. However, it remains unclear how new hybrid traits disrupt local adaptation. Here, we report how a new phenotype of hybrids between two ecotypes of Imperata cylindrica contributes to rapid reproductive isolation from their parents and affects hybrid fitness.</p> <p>We analyzed 350 accessions of I. cylindrica collected from the 1980s to the 2010s throughout Japan to explore the genetic population structure of the hybrids. We surveyed flowering periods, seed sets, and germination of two ecotypes and their hybrids in both natural habitats and common gardens.</p> <p>Genetic analyses of population structure revealed that the hybrid populations consisted of only F1 individuals, without post-F1 hybrids. The flowering phenology of the F1 plants was delayed to autumn, 5–6 months later than the parental ecotypes.</p> <p>The drastic shift in flowering phenology prevents F1s from backcrossing. In addition, it changes their seed dispersal time to winter. Germination is inhibited by low temperatures, and the seeds likely decay before the next spring, resulting in the absence of an F2 generation. For the first time in the field, we found environmental mismatch of F1 as a specific mechanism for the maintenance of only F1 populations.</p> <p>Synthesis. We have demonstrated that this flowering phenology mismatch promotes reproductive isolation between the parents and F1s and affects various temporal components of the hybrids, resulting in a unique hybrid population consisting only of F1s. This system sheds light on the importance of hybrid traits in terms of rapid reproductive isolation.</p>

Introgression between Sphyrapicus nuchalis and S. varius sapsuckers in a hybrid zone in west-central Alberta
<p>Studying species interactions at hybrid zones allows biologists to understand the forces that promote speciation. Hybridization among <i>Sphyrapicus nuchalis</i>, <i>S. varius</i>, and <i>S. ruber</i> has long been acknowledged, and hybrid zones between <i>S. nuchalis/S. ruber</i> and <i>S. varius/S. ruber</i> have been characterized with both genetic and genomic data. Using a combination of next-generation Restriction Site-Associated DNA sequencing (RAD-Seq) and traditional genetic methods, we examined patterns of introgression in the poorly characterized <i>S. nuchalis/S. varius</i> contact zone; the two most similar species in the complex, though they are not each other's closest relatives. We found high introgression rates, with several early and many advanced generation hybrids along a 275 km stretch of Rocky Mountain foothill, pointing to a well-established hybrid zone with hybrid individuals backcrossing with individuals from the parental species and each other. Plumage colouration in the hybrid zone was a relatively poor indicator of parental or hybrid status, which could be attributed to the possible involvement of few large effect genes.</p>
