Daily Meteorological data from East Peak, Sabana the Luquillo Experimental Forest

This data publication contains daily means from laser ceilometer data from Sabana and the mountain top station of East Peak, additional data for ozone data from Bisley, and meteorological data collected from Bisley are available from the USDA Forest Service Data Archive at https://doi.org/10.2737/RDS-2022-0050 All sites are located in the Luquillo Experimental Forest (El Yunque National Forest) in Puerto Rico. Atmospheric data include: mean cloud observed frequency, mean lowest height cloud (cloud base), mean daytime mixing layer height observed frequency, mean lowest mixing layer height from hours 7am and 7pm only, and mean daytime mixing layer height collected from February 2013 through April 2021. Also included is mean ozone amount collected from April 2008 through early April 2021. The cloud and mixing layer frequency and low values were calculated using the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) method employed at airports in the area. Weather data include high elevation East Peak mean northeast wind speed (wind rose quartiles 45° to 90°), mean southeast wind speed (wind rose quartiles 90° to 135°), and mean total wind speed measured from October 2009 through 2020 (and a few months in 2021). Additional weather data collected from January 2002 through mid October 2020 include mid elevation Bisley mean precipitation, mean relative humidity, and mean temperature. Luquillo canopy trimming experiment - meteorological data, soil sensor, and cannopy measurements

This data publication contains average daily means for field and satellite data from 3 treated and 3 control plots from the Canopy Trimming Experiment (CTE) located near El Verde Field Station (419 meters; 18°20’ N, 65°49’ W) in the Luquillo Experimental Forest (El Yunque National Forest), Puerto Rico collected from 2003 through 2019. In spring of 2005 (CTE1) and December of 2014 (CTE2), in 0.09 hectare (ha) square plots near the El Verde Field Station the forest canopy was trimmed and the canopy debris was littered to the forest floor. The plot size and trim amounts were based on the patch disturbance after the two most recent hurricanes before 2017, both category 3 hurricanes at the location of El Verde: Hugo in September 1989, and Georges in September 1998 (Zimmerman et al. 2014). Details of the trimming and littering treatment, as well as the biotic response to the 2005 experiment have been extensively documented (Richardson et al. 2010; Shiels et al. 2014, 2015; Shiels and González 2014). The data were collected in the inner 0.04 ha quadrants of the 0.09 ha trimmed plots to minimize edge effects. There were 3 sets of control and treated plots, with each set near El Verde field station. Field data include: solar radiation, throughfall, air temperature, soil temperature, relative humidity shallow soil, volumetric water content, soil profile volumetric water content, canopy leaf saturation, litter leaf saturation, and above canopy air temperature. Meteorological data from towers (pre-Hugo) or rooftop (post Hugo) at El Verde

The meteorological sensors were installed above the flat concrete roof of El Verde Field Station (elevation: 350 m asl). The building is in an approx. 0.3 ha clearing in a forest approx. 20 m tall. Data were processed and temporarily stored in a Campbell 21X data logger on-site. The station was initiated after the September 1989 hurricane. As this station was installed 3 meters above a concrete rooftop in a forest clearing, dry air temperatures during daylight hours are higher than those that would be measured in the adjacent forest. The USGS maintains a nearby (100 m away) station on a 20 m tower (since 1992). An additional station for temperature and humidity measurements in the forest understory was added in 1997. Additional measurements of daily rainfall and maximum and minimum air temperatures for this site since 1975 exist on separate files. Bisley Tower I Meteorological data (Bisley Tower)

Several meteorological parameters are being measured at Bisley since 1993. Correlations between elevation and stream-runoff and rainfall, elevation and air and soil temperature, and between trhoughfall and vegetation types have been found. These relationships are used inhydrologic and nutrient budgets as well as in environmental models . Electronic sensors are placed at the field location to support other activities. High-frequency, hourly, and daily UV measurements from Lake Hoare Meteorological Station (HOEM), McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2015-2022, ongoing)

As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long-Term Ecological Research program, total ultraviolet (UV) irradiance has been measured since 2015 using an independent UV radiometer system co-located with the Lake Hoare Meteorological Station (HOEM) in Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. Data are provided at high frequency (5-minute intervals), along with hourly and daily summaries. Users should note that summary statistics may be affected by periods of missing data. Since there is no universally accepted standard for handling gaps in time-series data, users are encouraged to work with the high-frequency data and establish their own criteria for acceptable data completeness to minimize any potential bias.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Gump Station Meteorological Data, ongoing since 2006

These data provide meteorological information measured at the GUMP research station on the north shore of Moorea island, French Polynesia. Data collection began in August 2006 and include air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, atmospheric pressure, and integrated rainfall. All sensors are sampled every 5 minutes. Post-processing of these data is limited to some unit conversion and exclusion of corrupted data records. Aggregate data are provided in daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly time bins. ClimDB data for station GUMPM were derived from the same data source.

North Temperate Lakes LTER: High Frequency Meteorological and Dissolved Oxygen Data - Trout Lake Buoy 2004 - current

The instrumented buoy on Trout Lake is equipped with a dissolved oxygen sensor, a thermistor chain, and meteorological sensors that provide fundamental information on lake thermal structure, weather conditions, and lake metabolism. Data are usually collected every 10 minutes with occasional periods of 2 minute data for short periods to answer specific questions. The D-Opto dissolved oxygen sensor is 0.5m from the lake surface. Meteorological sensors measure wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, air temperature, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and barometric pressure. Starting in 2005, thermistors were placed every 0.5-1m from the surface through 14m and every 2 to 4m from 14m to the bottom of the water column at 31m. In July 2006, a new thermistor chain was deployed with thermistors placed every meter from the surface through a depth of 19 meters. After correcting for flux to or from the atmosphere and vertical mixing within the water column, high frequency measurements of dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen can be used to estimate gross primary productivity, respiration, and net ecosystem productivity, the basic components of whole lake metabolism. Data are averaged to daily values from one minute samples for years 2005 - 2006. Daily values are computed from high resolution data starting in year 2007. Data are averaged to hourly values from one minute samples for years 2005 - 2008, Hourly values are computed from high resolution data starting in year 2009. Hourly and daily values may not be current with high resolution data in the current year. North Temperate Lakes LTER: High Frequency Meteorological and Metabolism Data - Crystal Bog Buoy 2005 - present

The instrumented buoy on Crystal Bog is equipped with a dissolved oxygen sensor, a thermistor chain, light sensor, and in the past, meteorological sensors that provide fundamental information on lake thermal structure and lake metabolism. A surface buoy was used from 2005 - 2014, which included a met station beginning 2006. Since then, only a subsurface buoy as been used (no met station), and includes frequent over-winter deployments under the ice. The thermistor chain data is included in a separate dataset (knb-lter-ntl.119). Hourly and daily averages are provided for the met data, while hourly averages are provided for the dissolved oxygen and light data. To accommodate the under-ice deployments, sensor depths vary somewhat year-to-year. Light data is collected with HOBO pendant light and temperature sensors. The make of the dissolved oxygen sensor has changed over the years: YSI (2005), D-Opto (2006-2014), and PME miniDOT (2015-present).

North Temperate Lakes LTER: High Frequency Data: Meteorological, Dissolved Oxygen, Chlorophyll, Phycocyanin - Lake Mendota Buoy 2006 - current

The instrumented buoy on Lake Mendota is equipped with limnological and meteorological sensors that provide fundamental information on lake thermal structure, weather conditions, and lake metabolism. Data are collected every minute. Hourly and daily averages are derived from the high resolution (1 minute) data. Hourly and daily values may not be current with high resolution data as they are calculated at the end of the season. Meteorological sensors measure wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, air temperature, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Not all sensors are deployed each season. A list of sensors used since the first deployment in 2006 is provided as a downloadable CSV file. The buoy is removed during the winter when the lake is ice-covered (typically Dec-Apr). Lake temperature data collected at the same buoy site can be found in an ancillary dataset. Number of sites: 1. Location lat/long: 43.0995, -89.4045 Notable events: 2017 - A boating mishap caused the loss of air temperature, relative humidity, and wind sensors between May 28 and July 11. The dissolved oxygen sensor had significant biofouling from algae and zebra mussels. 2019 - A YSI EXO2 sonde was added to the buoy and includes DO, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, specific conductance, pH, fDOM, and turbidity sensors. The chlorophyll and phycocyanin sensors replace Turner Cyclops 7 fluorometers that had been in use in prior years. Both sets of sensors output RFU, but have significant magnitude differences. The YSI pH, DO, and specific conductance sensors were cleaned and recalibrated every two weeks. 2020 - Cleaning and calibration of the YSI sensors occurred nearly every week. The dissolved CO2 sensor was not operating between July 2 and September 17. 2021 - Due to power and communications issues, the buoy was not operating August 22-31, and data is intermittent between November 8 and December 3. North Temperate Lakes LTER: Meteorological Data - Woodruff Airport 1989 - current

Meteorological measurements are being gathered at a site at the Noble F. Lee municipal airport located at Woodruff, WI for three purposes: 1) to supplement the data from the raft on Sparkling and Trout Lakes used for evaporation calculations, and 2) to provide standard meteorological measurements for the North Temperate Lakes site, and 3) to measure radiation for primary production studies in the study lakes at the site. The following parameters are measured at 1-minute intervals: 1) air temperature at 1.5 m above ground, 2) relative humidity at 1.5 m above ground, 3) wind speed and direction and peak wind speed at 3 m above ground, 4) total long-wave radiation, 5) total short-wave radiation, 6) photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), 7) total solar radiation, and 8) total precipitation. High resolution data is taken typically at 1 minute intervals as well as 1-hour and 24-hour averages. Half-hourly averages of PAR and shortwave radiation are also stored. Precipitation data can be acquired from the National Weather Service (Minocqua, WI). Derived data included in this data set include dew point temperature as well as daily minimum and maximum values for some parameters. Number of sites: 1. Date/time is Central Standard Time (GMT - 06:00) throughout the year. Crash of the data collection system resulted in the loss of most of the first half of 2024.

Madison Wisconsin Daily Meteorological Data 1869 - current

Daily air temperature, precipitation and snow depth data for Madison from 1869. For a full description of data prior to 1987 see Robertson, 1989 (Ph.D. Thesis). Raw data (in English units) prior to 1977 were assembled by Douglas Clark - Wisconsin State Climatologist. Data were converted to metric units and adjusted for temporal biases by Dale M. Robertson. Adjusted data represent the BEST estimated daily data and may be raw data. Daily temperature data prior to 1884 were estimated from 3 times per day sampling and biases are expected and should not be comparable with data after that time. For adjustments applied to various parameters see Robertson, 1989 Ph.D. Thesis UW-Madison. Douglas Clark had assembled and adjusted 1948 to 1977 data for his own research earlier. North Temperate Lakes LTER: High Frequency Meteorological and Dissolved Oxygen Data - Sparkling Lake Raft 1989 - current

The instrumented raft on Sparkling Lake is equipped with a dissolved oxygen and CO2 sensors, a thermistor chain, and meteorological sensors that provide fundamental information on lake thermal structure, weather conditions, evaporation rates, and lake metabolism. Estimating the flux of solutes to and from lakes requires accurate water budgets. Evaporation rates are a critical component of the water budget of lakes. Data from the instrumented raft on Sparkling Lake includes micrometeorological parameters from which evaporation can be calculated. Raft measurements of relative humidity and air temperature (2m height), wind velocity (2m) ,and water temperatures (from thermistors placed throughout the water column at intervals varying from 0.5 to 3m) are combined with measurements of total long-wave and short-wave radiation data from a nearby shore station to determine evaporation by the energy budget technique. Comparable evaporation estimates from mass transfer techniques are calibrated against energy budget estimates to produce a lake-specific mass transfer coefficient for use in estimating evaporation rates. After correcting for flux to or from the atmosphere and vertical mixing within the water column, high frequency measurements of dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen can be used to estimate gross primary productivity, respiration, and net ecosystem productivity, the basic components of whole lake metabolism. Other parameters measured include precipitation, wind direction (beginning in 2008), and barometric pressure (beginning in 2008).
