Dental molds from: Three-dimensional dental topography and feeding ecology in the extinct cave bear

<p><span><span>The cave bear (</span><i><span>Ursus spelaeus s.l</span></i><span>.) is an iconic extinct bear that inhabited the Pleistocene of Eurasia whose extinction causes are controversial. To identify the actual causes of the cave bear extinction, it is crucial to understand their feeding preferences. Here, </span></span><span>we quantify shape descriptor metrics (DNE, RFI and OPCR) in three dimensional (3D) models of cave bear upper teeth (P</span><sup><span>4</span></sup><span>-M</span><sup><span>2</span></sup><span>) to make inferences on its controversial feeding behaviour. We use a comparative sample including representatives of all living bear </span><span><span>species with known diets</span></span><span> as a template. </span><span><span>Our topographic analyses evidence</span></span><span> that the complexity of upper tooth rows in living bears is more associated with the mechanical properties of the items consumed than with the type of food. Cave bears exhibit intermediate values on topographic metrics between those exhibited by the bamboo-feeder giant panda (</span><i><span>Ailuropoda melanoleuca</span></i><span>) and those taken by specialists in hard-mast consumption (</span><i><span>Ursus arctos and Ursus thibetanus</span></i><span>). The crown topography of cave bear upper teeth suggests a high efficiency to </span><span><span>chew on tough vegetal resources of lower-quality,</span></span><span> and no living bear is currently exploiting it. </span><span><span>Our results align with</span></span><span> a climatic-driven hypothesis to explain demise in cave bear populations during the late Pleistocene.</span></p>

Inhibition mechanism and antibacterial activity of natural antibacterial agent citral on bamboo mold and its anti- mildew effect on bamboo

<p><span><span>Bamboo, a natural material, has been widely used in the fields of decoration, architecture and furniture. However, bamboo is easy to mildew and lose its use value. In this paper, inhibition mechanism and antibacterial activity of natural antibacterial agent citral on bamboo mold and its anti- mildew effect on bamboo were studied. The results showed that citral could change the shape of mycelium, destroy the integrity of mycelium structure, cell wall, and cell membrane structure, thereby causing leakage of nucleic acid, protein, and other substances in the cell, as well as destroy the pH balance of the inside and outside of the cell, to inhibit or kill mold. When the concentration of citral is 100mg/mL, the antibacterial rates of citral against <i>Penicillium citrinum </i>(PC), <i>Trichoderma viride</i> (TV), <i>Aspergillus niger</i> (AN) and a hybrid fungi group comprising PC, TV, and AN (Hun) were more than 100%. However, compared with the direct effect of citral on mold, the antibacterial property of bamboo treated with citral was significantly reduced, the mildew proof effect can be achieved only if the concentration of citral to treat bamboo is increased to more than 2 times of the concentration of citral directly acting on mold.</span></span></p>

Data from: In search of an optimal DNA diagnosis for taxonomic descriptions with MOLD, a novel tool to identify diagnostic nucleotide characters

<p>While DNA characters are increasingly used for phylogenetic inference, taxa delimitation and identification, their use for formal description of taxa remains scarce and inconsistent. The major impediments until recently was a lack of a suitable algorithm to identify signature DNA characters. The 2019-2020 however were marked by an almost simultaneous release of three softwares, simple to run and designed specifically for taxonomists. There is, nevertheless, a major concern, whether taxonomy will benefit from wide application of these, or any of the previously available tools. The reluctance of using DNA data in taxonomy is partly due to concerns of insufficient reliability of DNA characters, as robustness of DNA based diagnoses, depending on the sampled fraction of the species diversity has not thus far been assessed.</p> <p>We propose a novel program, named MOLD that recovers diagnostic nucleotide combinations (DNCs) for selected taxa with DNA sequences available. We carried our random iterated haplotype subsampling on species in six published DNA data sets of varying complexity, providing a diagnosis to each subsample to evaluate how the robustness of DNA based diagnosis changes depending on the sampled fraction of the taxon's diversity. We demonstrate that the currently used diagnostic DNA characters, or combinations thereof (DNCs) often do not exist for a particular species in a particular data set, or are not sufficiently reliable. We propose a new type of DNA diagnosis, termed herein rDNCs, which is compiled to suit pre-defined criteria of reliability, and is implemented in MOLD. We demonstrate that rDNCs can be successfully identified even in data sets comprising hundreds of species, and allow for notably more reliable diagnoses, than the currently used diagnostic DNA characters. MOLD recovers reliable and reproducible diagnoses in traditionally problematic cases, such as cryptic species or species with pronounced genetic structure, and shows unparalleled efficiency in large DNA data sets, making a valuable complement to the currently existing toolkit.</p>

Data from: The "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde fungus": noble rot versus gray mold symptoms of Botrytis cinerea on grapes

Many cryptic species have recently been discovered in fungi, especially in fungal plant pathogens. Cryptic fungal species co-occurring in sympatry may occupy slightly different ecological niches, for example infecting the same crop plant but specialized on different organs or having different phenologies. Identifying cryptic species in fungal pathogens of crops and determining their ecological specialization is therefore crucial for disease management. Here we addressed this question in the ascomycete Botrytis cinerea, the agent of grey mold on a wide range of plants. On grape, B. cinerea causes severe damages but is also responsible for noble rot used for processing sweet wines. We used microsatellite genotyping and clustering methods to elucidate whether isolates sampled on grey mold vs. noble rot symptoms in three French regions belong to genetically differentiated populations. The inferred population structure matched geography rather than the type of symptom. Noble rot symptoms therefore do not seem caused by a specific B. cinerea population but instead seem to depend essentially on microclimatic conditions, which has applied consequences for the production of sweet wines.

Data from: Climate change, snow mold, and the Bromus tectorum invasion: mixed evidence for release from cold weather pathogens

Climate change is reducing the depth and duration of winter snowpack, leading to dramatic changes in the soil environment with potentially important ecological consequences. Previous experiments in the Intermountain West of North America indicated that loss of snowpack increases survival and population growth rates of the invasive annual grass Bromus tectorum; however, the underlying mechanism is unknown. We hypothesized that reduced snowpack might promote B. tectorum population growth by decreasing damage from snow molds, a group of subnivean fungal pathogens. To test this hypothesis, we conducted greenhouse and field experiments to investigate the interaction between early snowmelt and either fungicide addition or snow mold infection of B. tectorum. The greenhouse experiment confirmed that the snow mold Microdochium nivale can cause mortality of B. tectorum seedlings. In the field experiment, early snowmelt and fungicide application both increased B. tectorum survival, but their effects did not interact, and snow mold inoculation had no effect on survival. We did find interactive effects of snowmelt and fungal treatments on B. tectorum seed production: with ambient snowpack, M. nivale inoculation reduced seed production and fungicide increased it, whereas in the early snowmelt treatment seed production was high regardless of fungal treatment. However, treatment effects on seed production did not translate directly to overall population growth, which did not respond to the snow melt by fungal treatment interaction. Based on our mixed results, the hypothesis that reduced snowpack may increase B. tectorum fitness by limiting the effects of plant pathogens deserves further investigation.

Molding 3D curved structures by selective heating

<p>It is of interest to fabricate curved surfaces in three dimensions from homogeneous material in the form of flat sheets. The aim is not just to obtain a surface which has a desired intrinsic Riemannian metric, but to get the desired embedding in R^3 up to translations and rotations. In this paper, we demonstrate three generic methods of molding a flat sheet of thermo-responsive plastic by selective contraction induced by targeted heating. These methods do not involve any cutting and gluing, which is a property they share with origami. The first method is inspired by tailoring, which is the usual method for making garments out of plain pieces of cloth. Unlike usual tailoring, this method produces the desired embedding in R^3. The second method just aims to bring about the desired new Riemannian metric via an appropriate pattern of local contractions, without directly controlling the embedding. The third method is based on triangulation, and seeks to induce the desired local distances. This results in getting the desired embedding in R^3. The second and the third methods, and also the first method for the special case of surfaces of revolution, are algorithmic in nature. We explain these methods, and show examples.</p>

Diversity of cellular slime molds (dictyostelids) in the Fanjing Mountain Nature Reserve and geographical distribution comparisons with other representative nature reserves in different climate zones of China

<p>Protected areas are widely considered an essential strategy for biodiversity conservation. Dictyostelids are unique soil protists known to have important ecological functions, but the relationship between dictyostelid diversity within protected areas remains poorly understood, especially on a large scale. Herein, we report data on the distribution of dictyostelids, identified with ITS + SSU rRNA molecular and morphology-based taxonomy, from soil samples collected in the Fanjing Mountain protected area of Guizhou Province, Southwest China. We compared the dictyostelids biodiversity data with similar data from previously sampled sites in other protected areas in China. We identified four species of dictyostelids belonging to three genera (<em>Dictyostelium</em>, <em>Heterostelium</em>, and <em>Polysphondylium</em>)and herein provide information on the taxonomy of these species information. Two species (<em>Heterostelium pallidum</em> and <em>Dictyostelium purpureum</em>) are common and widely distributed throughout the world, but one species (<em>Polysphondylium fuscans</em>) was new to China. Our data indicate that the distribution patterns of dictyostelids are most influenced by vegetation and temperature. Overall, the similarity index between Baiyun Mountain in Henan Province and Fanjing Mountain in Guizhou Province, located at approximately the same longitude, is the highest, and the similarity coefficients of family, genus and species are 100%, 100% and 12.5%, respectively. From a species perspective, species in the same climate zone are not closely related, but obvious geographical distributions are evident in different climate zones. This preliminary study provided evidence of the ecological adaptation of dictyostelids to different biological niches.</p>

Molding Machine Free Access Data

<p>The dataset above was constructed via an A K85 injection molding machine from Ferromatik Milacron. The machine contains three adjustable process parameters that can be considered configurable variables. These three variables are the mold temperature, the 2nd pressure value, and the 2nd pressure time of the compaction process. Several combinations of these variables were tested. For each combination of the variables, ten tests were carried out to ensure the stabilization of the process, with only the pressure and temperature data from these tests being acquired. Two sensors, a temperature sensor and a pressure sensor, have been installed and localized on the mold to measure the mold temperature and pressure. For selecting an optimal localization of the aforementioned two sensors, first a study of the temperature distribution and the pressure effect within the mold was carried out, and after detecting the best localization, two sensors were installed in the selected spots. The pressure and temperature sensors to be used are the Priamus 6001B and a type K thermonuclear, respectively.</p>
