Phosphorus is an essential element for food production whose main global sources are becoming scarce and expensive. Furthermore, losses of phosphorus throughout the food production chain can also cause serious aquatic pollution. Recycling urban organic waste resources high in phosphorus could simultaneously address scarcity concerns for agricultural producers who reply on phosphorus fertilisers, and waste managers seeking to divert waste from landfills to decrease environmental burdens. Recycling phosphorus back to agricultural lands however requires careful logistical planning to maximize benefits and minimize costs including, processing and transportation. The first step towards such analyses is quantifying recycling potential in a spatially-explicit way. Here we present such inventories and scenarios for the Greater Sydney Basin's recyclable phosphorus supply and agricultural demand. In 2011, there was fifteen times more phosphorus available in organic waste than agricultural demand for phosphorus in Sydney. Hypothetically, if future city residents shifted to a plant-based diet, eliminated edible food waste, and removed animal production in the Greater Sydney Basin, available phosphorus supply would decrease to 7.25 kt of phosphorus per year, even when accounting for population growth by 2031, and demand would also decrease to 0.40 kt of phosphorus per year. Creating a circular phosphorus economy for Sydney, in all scenarios considered, would require effective recycling strategies which include transport outside of the Greater Sydney Basin. These spatially explicit scenarios can be used as a tool to facilitate stakeholders engagement to identify opportunities and barriers for appropriate organic waste recycling strategies.
Investigations on recycled aggregate material behavior and its effect on concrete strength
<p>The fundamental behavior of the concrete materials has significant effects on its performance characteristics and, hence it can bring influences on the strength of the materials. This paper investigates the essential behavior of recycled aggregate materials recycled concrete aggregate materials that are manufactured from C&D wastes. It also evaluates its impact on the performance of concrete material, which is made from recycled aggregate as a substitute for conventional aggregate materials. Hence, the volume of C&D debris generated annually has been growing increasingly in most localities; there should be improvements in recycling and utilization of these materials. The recycled aggregate materials manufactured from C&D debris were then used as a substitute for conventional aggregate materials at a rate range from 0% to 100%. Recycled aggregates from C&D wastes measuring 10 – 40 mm collected from recycling plants for mixing purposes. Different concrete grades are used to evaluate the suitability of the material for utilizing it in various civil engineering and construction projects. The paper examined the fundamental properties of concrete for the M30 design mix that ranges up to 100% substitution of recycled aggregate material and conventional aggregate material. The overall material properties have been tested. The concrete materials that are produced from recycled aggregate as a substitution were used for various tests that check the performance of the materials. As a result, it shows that a noteworthy enhancement of strength detected in the concrete sample cubes that contained recycled concrete aggregates rather than mixed C&D waste recycled aggregates (RA).</p>
Data from: Preparation of core–shell structured CaCO 3 microspheres as rapid and recyclable adsorbent for anionic dyes
Core–shell structured CaCO3 microspheres (MSs) were prepared by a facile, one-pot method at room temperature. The adsorbent dosage and adsorption time of the obtained CaCO3 MSs were investigated. The results suggest that these CaCO3 MSs can rapidly and efficiently remove 99–100% of anionic dyes within the first 2 min. The obtained CaCO3 MSs have a high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area (211.77 m2 g−1). In addition, the maximum adsorption capacity of the obtained CaCO3 MSs towards Congo red was 99.6 mg g−1. We also found that the core–shell structured CaCO3 MSs have a high recycling capability for removing dyes from water. Our results demonstrate that the prepared core–shell structured CaCO3 MSs can be used as an ideal, rapid, efficient and recyclable adsorbent to remove dyes from aqueous solution.
Data from: Being in a "green" building elicits "greener" recycling, but not necessarily "better" recycling
Previous observational work revealed that transient populations in a sustainable building disposed of waste more accurately when compared to patrons in a non-sustainable building. The current study uses an experimental design to replicate this observed effect and to investigate whether or not the built environment influences motivational factors to impact behavior. We find support that a building designed and built to communicate an atmosphere of sustainability can influence waste disposal behavior. Participants in the sustainable building used the garbage receptacle significantly less and compensated by tending to select the containers and organics receptacle more, which actually resulted in more errors overall. Our findings suggest that building atmospherics can motivate people to recycle more. However, atmospherics alone do not appear to be sufficient to elicit the desired performance outcome.
Data from: A high-efficiency hydrocyclone designed by response surface methodology for acid hydrolysis residue recycling
A high-efficiency hydrocyclone was designed by response surface methodology to evaluate the recycling of acid hydrolysis residues from titanium dioxide (TiO2) production as a study case. TiO2 is an important product and the world's best white pigment. During its production from ilmenite (FeTiO3) by the sulphuric acid method, the incomplete reaction produces large amounts of residue, which also contain unreacted ilmenite. Large amounts of residue are generally accumulated without any treatment. Hydrocycloneuse is regarded as a method for separating and recovering chemicals from process residues by which the unreacted components can be recycled efficiently. However, hydrocyclones designed by conventional procedures may have some limitations regarding classification sharpness. In this paper, numerical experiments and laboratory tests were performed to evaluate the classification sharpness of various hydrocyclone designs. Response surface methodology was used to optimize hydrocyclones with different structural configurations. Based on the response models, a designed hydrocyclone with a high sharpness of classification of particles was constructed. The sharpness of the newly designed hydrocyclone increased from 80.5 % to 93.3 %. The vortex finder separated approximately 89.9 % of the fine particles in impurities, while 51.0 % of TiO2was recycled by the spigot. The hydrocyclone proposed in this paper properly minimizes the risk of environmental pollution caused by TiO2 production and provides a significant estimated cost savings.
Data from: Resource composition mediates the effects of intraspecific variability in nutrient recycling on ecosystem processes
Despite the growing evidence for individual variation in trophic niche within populations, its potential indirect effects on ecosystem processes remains poorly understood. In particular, few studies have investigated how intraspecific trophic variability can modulate the effects of consumers on ecosystems through potential changes in nutrient excretion rates. Here, we first quantified the level of intraspecific trophic variability in 11 wild populations of the omnivorous fish Lepomis gibbosus. Outputs from stomach content and stable isotope analyses revealed that the degree of trophic specialization and trophic positions were highly variable between and within these wild populations. There was intrapopulation variation in trophic position of more than one trophic level, suggesting that individuals consumed a range of plant and animal resources. We then experimentally manipulated intraspecific trophic variability to assess how it can modulate consumer-mediated nutrient effects on relevant processes of ecosystem functioning. Specifically, three food sources varying in nutrient quality (e.g. plant material, macro-invertebrate and fish meat) were used individually or in combination to simulate seven diet treatment. Results indicated that intraspecific variability in growth and nitrogen excretion rates were more related to the composition of the diet rather than the degree of specialization, and increased with the trophic position of the diet consumed. We subsequently used microcosms and showed that critical ecosystem functions, such as primary production and community respiration, were affected by the variability in excretory products, and this effect was biomass-dependent. These results highlight the importance of considering variation within species to better assess the effects of individuals on ecosystems and, more specifically, the effects of consumer-mediated nutrient recycling because the body size and the trophic ecology of individuals are affected by a large spectrum of natural and human-induced environmental changes.

<p>The 2018 SAM for Germany comprises of 160 accounts including 63 activities, 85 commodities, margins, labor, capital, household, government, social contributions, taxes on products, activity tax, direct tax, stock change, savings and investment and the rest of the world. It is entirely based on data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis), which guarantees the highest possible degree of data-consistency. Because the initial version of the SAM (Proto-SAM) has imbalances in the government, savings and investment and the rest of the world accounts, a balanced SAM is estimated using the cross-entropy method. To ensure the consistency of the data through the estimation process, macro totals are enforced as controls for total imports, total value-added, total private consumption, total government consumption and total exports.</p>
