Data from: Lineage diversity within a widespread endemic Australian skink to better inform conservation in response to regional-scale disturbance
<p>This dataset was used to examine the phylogeographic genetic structure of Eastern three lined skink<em> Bassiana duperreyi</em>. It comprises SNP data used for population genetics and phylogenetic reconstruction. The data were used to provide foundational work for the detailed taxonomic re-evaluation of this species complex and to reinforce the need for biodiversity assessment to include an examination of cryptic species and/or cryptic diversity below the level of species. Such information on lineage diversity within species and its distribution in the context of disturbance at a regional scale can be factored into conservation planning regardless of whether a decision is made to formally diagnose new species taxonomically and nomenclaturally.</p>

Data from: Do metal mines and their runoff affect plumage color? A regional scale study of streak-backed orioles in south-central Mexico
<p>Metal mining causes serious ecological disturbance, due partly to heavy metal (HM) pollution that can accumulate at mining sites themselves and be dispersed downstream as runoff. Plumage coloration is important in birds' social and ecological interactions and sensitive to environmental stressors, and several local-scale studies have found decreased carotenoid-based plumage and/or increased melanin-based plumage in wild birds exposed to HM pollution. We investigated regional-scale effects of proximity to mines and their downstream rivers as a proxy of exposure to HM-contaminated mining waste on plumage coloration in streak-backed orioles (<em>Icterus pustulatus</em>) in south-central Mexico. We measured the plumage color of museum skins using reflectance spectrometry and digital photography, then used geographic information systems to estimate each specimen's distance from the nearest mining concession and river and determine whether that river's watershed contained mines. Proximity to mines and their downstream rivers was related to ventral (but not dorsal) carotenoid-based coloration; birds collected farther from mines had more vivid yellow-orange breast plumage, and belly plumage was more vivid and redder with increasing distance from rivers with upstream mines. Breast background reflectance unexpectedly decreased with mine distance and was higher among birds whose nearest river had mines upstream. The area (but not reflectance) of melanin-based plumage was also related to mines. The area of dark back streaks decreased with mine distance, while the bib patch was smaller among birds presumably more exposed to mining waste. While some of these results are consistent with predicted effects of HM pollution on plumage, most were not straightforward, and effects differed among plumage patches and variables. Further investigation is needed to understand the direct (e.g., toxicity, oxidative stress) and/or indirect (e.g., decreased availability of carotenoid-rich food) mechanisms responsible and their individual, population, and community-level implications. </p>
Data from: Repeatability of adaptive radiation depends on spatial scale: regional versus global replicates of stickleback in lake versus stream habitats
The repeatability of adaptive radiation is expected to be scale dependent, with determinism decreasing as greater spatial separation among "replicates" leads to their increased genetic and ecological independence. Threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) provide an opportunity to test whether this expectation holds for the early stages of adaptive radiation -their diversification in freshwater ecosystems has been replicated many times. To better understand the repeatability of that adaptive radiation, we examined the influence of geographic scale on levels of parallel evolution by quantifying phenotypic and genetic divergence between lake and stream stickleback pairs sampled at regional (Vancouver Island) and global (North America and Europe) scales. We measured phenotypes known to show lake-stream divergence and used reduced representation genome-wide sequencing to estimate genetic divergence. We assessed the scale-dependence of parallel evolution by comparing effect sizes from multivariate models and also the direction and magnitude of lake-stream divergence vectors. At the phenotypic level, parallelism was greater at the regional than the global scale. At the genetic level, putative selected loci showed greater lake-stream parallelism at the regional than the global scale. Generally, the level of parallel evolution was low at both scales, except for some key univariate traits. Divergence vectors were often orthogonal, highlighting possible ecological and genetic constraints on parallel evolution at both scales. Overall, our results confirm that the repeatability of adaptive radiation decreases at increasing spatial scales. We suggest that greater environmental heterogeneity at larger scales imposes different selection regimes, thus generating lower repeatability of adaptive radiation at larger spatial scales.

Large-scale reforestation can increase water yield and reduce drought risk for water-insecure regions in the Asia-Pacific
<p>Large-scale reforestation can potentially bring both benefits and risks to the water cycle, which needs to be better quantified under future climates to inform reforestation decisions. We identified 477 water-insecure basins worldwide accounting for 44.6% (380.2 Mha) of the global reforestation potential. As many of these basins are in the Asia-Pacific, we used regional coupled land-climate modelling for the period 2041–2070 to reveal that reforestation increases evapotranspiration and precipitation for most water-insecure regions over the Asia-Pacific. This resulted in a statistically significant increase in water yield (p < 0.05) for the Loess Plateau-North China Plain, Yangtze Plain, Southeast China and Irrawaddy regions. Precipitation feedback was influenced by the degree of initial moisture limitation affecting soil moisture response and thus evapotranspiration, as well as precipitation advection from other reforested regions and moisture transport away from the local region. Reforestation also reduces the probability of extremely dry months in most of the water-insecure regions. However, some regions experience non-significant declines in net water yield due to heightened evapotranspiration outstripping increases in precipitation, or declines in soil moisture and advected precipitation.</p>
Weak population genetic structure in Eurasian spruce bark beetle over large regional scales in Sweden
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>The Eurasian spruce bark beetle, <em>Ips typographus</em>, is a major pest, capable of killing spruce forests during large population outbreaks. Recorded dispersal distances of individual beetles are typically within hundreds of meters or a few </span>kilometres<span>. However, the connectivity between populations at larger distances and longer time spans and how this is affected by the habitat is less studied, despite its importance for understanding at which distances local outbreaks may spread. Previous population genetic studies in <em>I. typographus </em>typically used low resolution markers. Here, we use genome-wide data to assess population structure and connectivity of<em> I. typographus </em>in Sweden. We used 152 individuals from 19 population samples, distributed over 830 km from Strömsund (63º 46' 8'' N) in the north to Nyteboda (56º 8'</span> <span>50'' N) in the south, to capture processes at a large regional scale, and a transect sampling design adjacent to a recent outbreak to capture processes at a smaller scale (76 km). Using restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) markers capturing 1409-1997 SNPs throughout the genome, we document a weak genetic structure over the large scale, potentially indicative of high connectivity with extensive gene flow. No differentiation was detected at the smaller scale. We find indications of isolation-by-distance both for relative (F<sub>ST</sub>) and absolute divergence (Dxy). The two northernmost populations are most differentiated from the remaining populations, and diverge in parallel to the southern populations for a set of outlier loci. In conclusion, the population structure of <em>I. typographus </em>in Sweden is weak, suggesting a high capacity to disperse and establish outbreak populations in new territories.</span></p>

Scaling up video: from ePLANET region to national context
<p><span>The ePLANET scaling-up videos have been designed as a key material to highlight the added value of using ePLANET platform and governance strategies within the pilot territories, and so attract other local and regional authorities at national level on the adoption of ePLANET outcomes.</span></p> <p><span>In total, 3 scaling-up videos have been produced, each of them tailored to the specific states of pilot regions. In particular:</span></p> <ul> <li><span>Czech Republic (Zlín region pilot)</span></li> <li>Catalonia (Girona region pilot)</li> <li>Greece (Crete island pilot)</li> </ul> <p><span>The 3 videos have a common initial section, combining motion graphics together with a voice-over presentation (in the national language of each pilot region), followed by a tailored section with two short testimonials from the addressed pilot region.</span></p> <p><span>The common initial section has the format of a storytelling animated by motion-graphics. The storytelling highlights the added value of collaboration amongst local authorities to improve the capacities, decision-making and investment opportunities related to the deployment of Energy Action plans.</span></p> <p> </p>
Visualization of particle-resolved simulations of aerosols on the regional scale
<p><span><span>In this study, we visualize the evolution of aerosol particles over Northern California using simulations from the WRF-PartMC model. We present two days of results, centering the numerical grid on the Bay Area with a horizontal resolution of 4-by-4-kilometers. Each grid cell contains approximately 5,000 computational particles to represent the aerosol.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>Much like snowflakes, aerosol particles exhibit immense diversity in size and chemical composition, continuously evolving as they travel through the atmosphere. Our particle-resolved simulation captures these processes with unprecedented detail, including the aerosol mixing state. This study is pioneering in its use of particle-resolved methods to simulate aerosols on a regional scale.</span></span></p> <div></div> <div> <div> <div></div> </div> </div> <p> </p>

Large-scale exploration of nitrogen utilization efficiency in Asia region for rice crop: variation patterns and determinants
<p><span>Improving rice nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE) is imperative to maximizing future food productivity while minimizing environmental threats, yet knowledge of its variation and the underlying regulatory factors is still lacking. Here, we integrated a dataset with 21,571 data compiled by available data from peer-reviewed literature and a large-scale field survey to address this knowledge gap. The overall results revealed great variations in rice NUtE, which were mainly associated with human activities, climate conditions and rice variety. Specifically, N supply rate, temperature and precipitation were the foremost determinants of rice NUtE, and NUtE responses to climatic change differed among rice varieties. Further prediction highlighted the improved rice NUtE with the increasing latitude or longitude. The <em>indica</em> and <em>hybrid</em> rice exhibited higher NUtE in low-latitude regions compared to <em>japonica</em> and <em>inbred</em> rice, respectively. Collectively, our results evaluated the primary drivers of rice NUtE variations and predicted the geographical responses of NUtE in different varieties. Linking the global variations in rice NUtE with environmental factors and geographical adaptability provides valuable agronomic and ecological insights into the regulation of rice NUtE.</span></p>
