Lehmann, and Markus Kienast: "Stable isotope ratios in seawater nitrate reflect the influence of Pacific water along the northwest Atlantic margin", Biogeosciences, 18, 1–20, 2021. <a href="https://doi.org/10.5194/bg-2021-45">https://doi.org/10.5194/bg-2021-45</a>.</p> <p>The dataset comprises nutrient concentrations and nitrate isotope ratios for “bottle” samples of seawater collected by CTD/Rosette from 25 stations along the northwest Atlantic Ocean, from the Labrador shelf to northern Baffin Bay. Seawater physical properties measured by CTD are also provided for the depths at which bottle samples were collected. The complete sampling and analytical methods are provided in the accompanying article. </p>

<p>All data and scripts uploaded and described here are related to the manuscript being submitted under the title: "<span lang="EN-GB">Feather corticosterone and stable isotopes explain fledging and adult breeding success in a burrow-nesting seabird, the Yelkouan shearwater <em>Puffinus yelkouan</em>", accepted for publication in Marine Biology (doi: 10.1007/s00227-025-04748-8).</span></p> <h2><strong><u>Adult Breeding success </u></strong></h2> <p>In the script “YESH_Malta_BreedingSuccess_DSR_Rmark.R” apparent breeding success and daily nest survival rates are estimated for yelkouan shearwater nests in Maltese colonies based on the nest log data found in “BreedingSuccessSummaryData.zip”.</p> <h2><strong><u>Nestling and fledgling feather growth, corticosterone, stable isotopes and mercury</u></strong></h2> <p>The R script “YESH_FeatherGrowth_CORT_SI_Hg_chicks_Malta_Script.R” was written to load, combine and analyse all the data related to measurements of nestling growth, feather corticosterone, bulk stable isotopes and mercury analysis. The folder “YESH_FeatherGrowth_CORT_SI_Hg_chicks_Malta_Data.zip” contains the files with these data as named and loaded in the script. The folder also contains the original outputs from the corticosterone measurements by plate, including standard curves, provided in the subfolder: “CORT_Output_by_plate”. Shatsky Rise, ODP Sites 1209 and 1210 Maastrichtian composite bulk carbonate stable isotopes, XRF scanning, biogenic barium, and benthic foraminiferal records
<p>A bulk composite carbonate stable isotope, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning (elemental barium), biogenic barium and benthic foraminiferal record in deep sea sediments from the tropical Pacific was produced from 71.5 to 66 million years ago to determine variations in carbon export in the Pacific during the Maastrichtian. The cores were drilled on Shatsky Rise in the tropical Pacific at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 198 Sites 1209 and 1210. Method details and interpretation are in the publication.</p>
Insights into natal origins of migratory Nearctic hover flies (Diptera: Syrphidae): New evidence from stable isotope (δ2H) assignment analyses
<p>Hover flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) are an important group of insects that provide a multitude of key ecosystem services including pollination and biological control, yet many of their major life history traits are not understood. Some Palearctic hover fly species are known to migrate in response to changing seasonal conditions, yet this behavior is almost entirely unrecognized in Nearctic species. At least one species, <em>Eupeodes</em> <em>americanus</em> (Wiedemann 1830), is partially migratory during autumn while <em>Allograpta</em> <em>obliqua</em> may be non-migratory, but it is unknown where these insects originate and how far they may travel. We examined natal origins of two Nearctic hover fly species, <em>Allograpta</em> <em>obliqua</em> and <em>Eupeodes</em> <em>americanus</em>, using stable hydrogen isotope (δ<sup>2</sup>H) measurements of metabolically inactive tissues (wings and legs) to derive a hover fly δ<sup>2</sup>H isoscape. While <em>Allograpta</em> <em>obliqua</em> was mostly of local origin, several <em>Eupeodes</em> <em>americanus</em> were sourced from northern latitudes in the Midwestern United States and Canada, representing travel distances of up to 3,000 km likely using seasonally favorable air currents. This phenomenon is expected to have major ecological and economic ramifications, especially in the realm of plant pollination ecology and biological control.</p>
Radiometric dating of sediment cores from three alpine lakes in Utah, United States, with stable isotope data
<p>We collected sediment cores from three alpine lakes in Utah, United States, to isolate dormant <em>Daphnia </em>eggs for a resurrection ecology experiment. Our question was whether radioactive fallout from above-ground nuclear weapons testing at the Nevada Test Site in the 1950s and 1960s caused increased mutation rates and population evolution in <em>Daphnia</em>. That work is ongoing. Here, we publish radioisotope dating profiles from our sediment cores.</p>

Stable isotopes reveal intertidal fish and crabs use shellfish farms as foraging habitat in Puget Sound, Washington
<p>This is the dataset used for my second thesis chapter. The data consists of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope data collected in 3 locations in North Puget Sound in 2020-2022. Locations are Samish Bay, Padilla Bay, and Drayton Harbor. Stable isotope data is presented in standard permil format, with values referenced from the Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite and atmospheric nitrogen standards, which are the international reference standards commonly used as isotopic references for carbon and nitrogen. </p> <p>Primary productivity samples, snails, oysters, and clams were collected by hand at low tide. Fish and crabs were collected via beach seine and crab pots deployed concurrently with seining. </p> <p>Samples were collected either within bivalve farms, or within eelgrass meadow reference sites outside of farmed areas.</p> <p>All code and data necessary to reproduce the analysis is available via my Github page. </p> <p>The metadata spreadsheet contains descriptions of each column in the datasheet.</p> <p>For more information, see my chapter 2 thesis.</p>
Anaerobic Methane Oxidation is Quantitatively Important in Deeper Peat Layers of Boreal Peatlands: Evidence from in situ Stable Isotopes Depth Profiles, Anaerobic Incubations, and Microbial Communities
<p>Dataset contains complete result of laboratory anaerobic incubations with peat samples from 3 West Siberian peatlands.</p> <p>Before the incubation, the peat samples were thoroughly mixed to ensure homogeneity. Aliquots (140 ± 1 g) were mixed with distilled water at a ratio of 1:2 by weight, and then placed into sterile 500 ml glass bottles, flushed with pure argon (99.9999%, Voessen, Russia) for 5 min to remove any oxygen and sealed with butyl rubber septa to maintain anaerobic conditions. The bottles were kept at +5°C for 1 day to allow the equilibration between the peat and the headspace. Then bottles were again thoroughly flushed with argon for 5 min, sealed, and an additional 5 ml of argon was added to prevent air diffusion into the bottle headspace. The incubation was performed in two different ways: i) unamended control, and ii) amended with 10 ml of CH<sub>3</sub>F to inhibit acetotrophic methanogenesis. Peat samples from the depths of 15-20 and 40-50 cm were incubated at 15° and 10°C, respectively, for a period of 60 days, whereas deeper peat samples were incubated at 5°С, representing the temperature of the deeper peat layers of Mukhrino bog during the snow-free period for 150 days. Gas (1 mL for Н<sub>2</sub>, CH<sub>4</sub> and CO<sub>2</sub> concentration, 1 mL for stable isotope compositions) and liquid (1 mL for organic acids) samples were taken for analysis every two weeks after manually shaking the bottles for approximately 5 s to equilibrate the gaseous and aqueous phases. At the end of the incubation, methane headspace concentrations ranged from 1 to 3 % for deeper samples. The incubations with and without CH<sub>3</sub>F addition were carried out in three replicates for samples from Mukhrino bog and in two replicates for Chistoe and Lempino bogs. Net methane and CO<sub>2</sub> production were calculated from the gas concentrations, the volume of the gas space, and the water volume using the ideal gas law. Gas solubility was calculated using Henry’s law. The reported net methane and CO<sub>2</sub> production are the averages of 2-3 replicates.</p> <p>See further details in a paper with the same title and the first author.</p>
Atlantic cod individual spatial behaviour and stable isotope associations in a no-take marine reserve
<ol> <li>Foraging is a behavioural process and, therefore, individual behaviour and diet are theorized to covary. However, few comparisons of individual behaviour type and diet exist in the wild.</li> <li>We tested whether behaviour type and diet covary in a protected population of Atlantic cod, <em>Gadus</em> <em>morhua</em>. </li> <li>Working in a no-take marine reserve, we could collect data on natural behavioural variation and diet choice with minimal anthropogenic disturbance. We inferred behaviour using acoustic telemetry and diet from stable isotope compositions (expressed as δ<sup>13</sup>C and δ<sup>15</sup>N values). We further investigated whether behaviour and diet could have survival costs.</li> <li>We found cod with shorter diel vertical migration distances fed at higher trophic levels. Cod δ<sup>13</sup>C and δ<sup>15</sup>N values scaled positively with body size. Neither behaviour nor diet predicted survival, indicating phenotypic diversity is maintained without survival costs for cod in a protected ecosystem.</li> <li>The links between diet and diel vertical migration highlight that future work is needed to understand whether the shifts in this behaviour during environmental change (e.g. fishing or climate), could lead to trophic cascades. </li> </ol>
