User Stories made by Users Workshop Data Set
<p>In order to enable members of a socio-technical evolutionary-teal organization to design their technical component, we conducted a workshop that structures the collaboration between technical trained participants and non-trained participants. The workshop aims to transform "vague needs" into technical descriptions in the form of user stories.</p> <p>The workshop is the second part of series of workshops all limited to two hours. It uses the methods of <em>Design Thinking</em> and <em>Participatory Design</em>.</p> <p>The workshop has been recorded in video and this data set contains a textual German transcript, transcripts of the moderation cards that have been created during the workshop, invitations of the participants, additional material needed to conduct the workshop (timetable, moderation concept, etc.), and material used during the workshop by the participants (leaflets, slides, etc.).</p> <p>We hope that the material can be used to (a) comprehend the interpretation used in our qualitative research, (b) to adapt the workshop model by other volunteers of our case study Viva con Agua de St. Pauli e.V. (<a href="https://www.vivaconagua.org/">https://www.vivaconagua.org/</a>), and (c) investigate other interesting research questions.</p>
NyU-BU contextually controlled stories Corpus: NUBUC
<p>The success of a language experiment heavily relies on selecting appropriate stimulus materials. This selection process entails a critical trade-off between similarity to ‘real’ language (i.e. external validity) and experimental and analytic control (i.e. internal validity). In order to bridge these conflicting demands, we developed the NyU-BU contextually controlled stories Corpus (NUBUC) of spoken language. The corpus is both naturalistic and experimentally controlled, comprising 16 high-quality recordings of 8 unique stories, spoken both by a female and a male actor. Each story consists of 128 sentences (~2000 words per story) organized around critical keywords, which have been matched along multiple linguistic dimensions. The context surrounding each keyword is also parametrically manipulated, varying prior context (weak/strong), local context (weak/strong) and sentence position (early/late). Here we describe the corpus in detail, including how it compares to and builds on existent corpora. These materials showcase the ability to overcome the apparent dichotomy between control and generalizability, by presenting subjects with carefully curated linguistic materials in a naturalistic listening scenario. </p>
Data from: Unlocking the story in the swab: A new genotyping assay for the amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis
One of the most devastating emerging pathogens of wildlife is the chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), which affects hundreds of amphibian species around the world. Genomic data from pure Bd cultures has advanced our understanding of Bd phylogenetics, genomic architecture, and mechanisms of virulence. However pure cultures are laborious to obtain and whole genome sequencing is comparatively expensive, so relatively few isolates have been genetically characterized. Thus we still know little about the genetic diversity of Bd in natural systems. The most common non-invasive method of sampling Bd from natural populations is to swab amphibian skin. Hundreds of thousands of swabs have been collected from amphibians around the world, but Bd DNA collected via swabs is often low in quality and/or quantity. In this study, we developed a custom Bd genotyping assay using the Fluidigm Access Array platform to amplify 192 carefully-selected regions of the Bd genome. We obtained robust sequence data for pure Bd cultures and field-collected skin swabs. This new assay has the power to accurately discriminate among the major Bd clades, recovering the basic tree topology previously revealed using whole genome data. Additionally, we established a critical value for initial Bd load for swab samples (150 Bd genomic equivalents) above which our assay performs well. By leveraging advances in microfluidic multiplex PCR technology and the globally distributed resource of amphibian swab samples, non-invasive skin swabs can now be used to address critical spatial and temporal questions about Bd and its effects on declining amphibian populations.
Data from: Porcine colonization of the Americas: a 60k SNP story
The pig, Sus scrofa, is a foreign species to the American continent. Although pigs originally introduced in the Americas should be related to those from the Iberian Peninsula and Canary islands, the phylogeny of current creole pigs that now populate the continent is likely to be very complex. Because of the extreme climates that America harbours, these populations also provide a unique example of a fast evolutionary phenomenon of adaptation. Here, we provide a genome wide study of these issues by genotyping, with a 60k SNP chip, 206 village pigs sampled across 14 countries and 183 pigs from outgroup breeds that are potential founders of the American populations, including wild boar, Iberian, international and Chinese breeds. Results show that American village pigs are primarily of European ancestry, although the observed genetic landscape is that of a complex conglomerate. There was no correlation between genetic and geographical distances, neither continent wide nor when analysing specific areas. Most populations showed a clear admixed structure where the Iberian pig was not necessarily the main component, illustrating how international breeds, but also Chinese pigs, have contributed to extant genetic composition of American village pigs. We also observe that many genes related to the cardiovascular system show an increased differentiation between altiplano and genetically related pigs living near sea level.
