The phylogeny and function of gut microbiota associated with host geographic/genetic distance and biological characteristics (data S1)
<p>Symbiotic microbiomes play important roles in hosts' adaptation and evolution. Here, the gut bacterial communities in <i>Cephalcia chuxiongica</i>, a key pest of pines in China, were studied for the first time by using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. The composition of gut bacterial communities differed in different <i>C. chuxiongica</i> geographic populations, while the various microbes performed similar functions, suggesting some kinds of functional complementation. The predicted functional profiles of microbes indicated that most of identified KEGG Pathways were shared by different populations, in which metabolism was the most dominant functional pathway. Moreover, the function of major microbes associated with host dietary specialization (pine needles), such as cellulose degradation. All samples contained abundant <i>Wolbachia</i>, which may play important roles on the parthenogenesis of <i>C</i><i>.</i><i> chuxiongica</i>. The high abundances of <i>Serratia</i> and <i>Sphingomonas </i>in samples suggest that gut microbiota may crucial for the long-term larval diapause in <i>C. chuxiongica</i><i>. </i>Interestingly, this study found that the phylogeny and diversity of gut microbiota correlated to host geographic/genetic distance, i.e., the microbiota<i> </i>was more similar as the geographic/genetic distance decreased, and vice versa. Therefore, the synergy of environmental and host factors appears to be the main force shaping the structure and variability of gut microbiota and likewise, gut microbiota may exert a significant effect on its host by shaping host biological characters, suggesting some kinds of extraordinary symbiosis and coevolution. These results demonstrate the important contribution of gut microbiota and provide a sound foundation for developing control strategies for this pest.</p>
Data from: Gut bacterial and fungal communities in ground-dwelling beetles are associated with host food habit and habitat
Beetles (Coleoptera) have the highest species diversity among all orders, and they have diverse food habits. Gut microbes may have contributed to this diversification of food habits. Here, we identified the pattern of the relationship between ground-dwelling beetles and their gut microbial communities (bacteria and fungi) in the field. We collected 46 beetle species of five families from secondary deciduous forests and grasslands in Japan and extracted microbial DNA from whole guts for amplicon sequencing. The gut bacterial and fungal communities differed among all habitats and all food habits of their hosts (carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, and scavengers) except for the fungal communities between carnivores and scavengers. Specifically, the abundant bacterial group varied among food habits: Xanthomonadaceae were abundant in scavengers, whereas Enterobacteriaceae were abundant in carnivores and herbivores. Phylogenetically closely related beetles had phylogenetically similar communities of Enterobacteriaceae, suggesting that the community structure of this family is related to the evolutionary change in beetle ecology. One of the fungal groups, Yarrowia species, which has been reported to have a symbiotic relationship with silphid beetles, was also detected from various carnivorous beetles. Our results suggest that the symbiotic relationships between ground-dwelling beetles and these microbes are widespread.
Data from: The presence of kleptoparasitic fledglings is associated with a reduced breeding success in the host family in the barn owl
Fledgling birds sometimes abandon their own nest and move to neighboring nests where they are fed by host parents. This behaviour, referred to as "nest‐switching", is well known in precocial birds that are mobile soon after hatching and can easily reach foster nests. In contrast, due to the difficulty of observing nest‐switching in territorial altricial birds, the causes and consequences of moving to others' nests are poorly known in this group of birds. Nest‐switchers can be adopted by the foster parents or they can steal food from the host parents meant for their offspring, a form of kleptoparasitism, which may result in reduced breeding success of the host nest. In Israel, 12 barn owl fledglings left their natal nests and were found in 9 host nests out of 111 monitored nests (8.1%). Nest‐switchers that fledged earlier in the breeding season flew shorter distances to reach host nests probably because the density of nests with younger nestlings is higher early in the season. The number of host nestlings fledged and the percentage of nestlings fledged was lower in host nests than in nest without switchers. The occasional nest‐switchers were always older than host nestlings (respectively 80 and 50 days of age, on average) and host parents fledged fewer young when nest‐switchers occupied host nests with younger nestlings. This suggests that nest‐switchers are kleptoparasites because the presence of the older alien fledglings is associated with a lower breeding success of the host parents.
