Lying deadwood retention affects microhabitat use of martens (Martes spp.) in European mountain forests

<p><span>Biodiversity loss due to intensive timber production is a ubiquitous conservation issue across temperate and boreal forest ecosystems. Retention forestry, the retention of deadwood and old-growth features within production forest, is one management strategy that has been implemented in various countries around the world to conserve a wide range of taxa within managed forests. The success and ecological implications of retention forestry are currently subject to intensive investigation and while some taxa like birds and insects have already been studied frequently, larger mammals have obtained less attention. Pine martens are one of the few larger mammals in central Europe preferring older forest and potentially profiting directly from deadwood retention as a consequence of implemented retention forestry. The goal of our study was to assess the response of European marten species to deadwood retention in montane mixed forests. Using marten detection rates from camera traps on 135 research plots we assessed the response of martens to deadwood on three different spatial scales using generalized linear mixed models. We found no effect of lying deadwood on marten detections on the plot scale (one-hectare) or in a ten-meter radius around the camera traps. However, we found a significant increase in marten detections if logs (&gt;10 cm) were directly in front and in view of the camera trap. Our results show that deadwood retention as a measure of retention forestry does affect microhabitat use of martens, but not stand selection during the growing season. Logs directly in view of the camera trap increase marten detection rates as martens choose to move and forage along fallen trees when they are available. When using camera trapping to collect data on martens, trap positioning in front of logs can heavily bias trapping results when unaccounted for.</span></p>

Applying genomic approaches to identify historic population declines in European forest bats

<ol> <li>Anthropogenically-driven environmental changes over the past two centuries have led to severe biodiversity loss, most prominently in the form of loss of populations and individuals. Better tools are needed to assess the magnitude of these wildlife population declines. Anecdotal evidence suggests European bat populations have suffered substantial declines in the past few centuries. However, there is little empirical evidence of these declines that can be used to put more recent population changes into historic context and set appropriate targets for species recovery. </li> <li>This study is a collaboration between academics and conservation practitioners to develop molecular approaches capable of providing quantitative evidence of historic population changes and their drivers that can inform the assessment of conservation status and conservation management. We generated a genomic dataset for the Western barbastelle, <em>Barbastella barbastellus</em>, a globally Near Threatened and regionally Vulnerable bat species, including colonies from across the species' British and Iberian ranges. We used a combination of landscape genetics and approximate Bayesian computation model-based inference of demographic history to identify both evidence of population size changes and possible drivers of these changes. </li> <li>We found that levels of genetic diversity and inbreeding were related to broadleaf woodland cover around the colony location. Genetic connectivity was impeded by artificial lights and facilitated by the combination of rivers and broadleaf woodland cover. </li> <li>The demographic history analysis showed that both the northern and southern British barbastelle populations have declined by 99% over the past 330–548 years. These declines may have been triggered by loss of large oak trees and native woodlands due to shipbuilding during the early colonial period.</li> <li> <em>Synthesis and applications</em>. Genomic approaches can be applied to provide a better understanding of the conservation status of threatened species, within historic and contemporary context, and inform their conservation management. This study shows how we can bridge the implementation gap and promote the application of genomics in conservation management through co-designing studies with conservation practitioners and co-developing applied management targets and recommendations.</li> </ol>

Database of experimental determinations of soil respiration in pine and spruce forests during the growing season of 2023 at the Lyalsky test site (middle taiga, northeast of the East European Plain)

<p>The data set includes the results of 342 measurements of CO2 emissions (SR, gС/m2/day) from the soil surface of coniferous ecosystems at the Lyalsky test site during the growing season (May-September) of 2023. The objects of the study were: pine forest (PS, Gleyic Folic Albic Podzol (Arenic)) and spruce forest (SM, Albic Retisols). The values of temperature (Ts, at a depth of 10 cm), moisture (Ms, in a layer of 0-5 cm) of the soil and air temperature (Ta) are also given.</p><p>The research was carried out by employees of the Institute of Biology of Komi Science Centre of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences as part of the most important innovative project of national importance "Development of a system for ground-based and remote monitoring of carbon pools and greenhouse gas fluxes in the territory of the Russian Federation, ensuring the creation of recording data systems on the fluxes of climate-active substances and the carbon budget in forests and other terrestrial ecological systems" (Registration number: 123030300031-6).&nbsp;</p>

The functional significance of tree species diversity in European forests - the FunDivEUROPE dataset

<p><span>The FunDivEUROPE project, short for "Functional Significance of Forest Biodiversity in Europe," aimed at exploring the intricate relationships between forest biodiversity and ecosystem functionality, focusing specifically on European forests. The project was a collaborative effort involving scientists from multiple disciplines and institutions. It entailed a comprehensive, large-scale assessment of forest biodiversity and its impact on ecosystem functions in a network of observational plots spanning the European continent. This extensive network enabled us to systematically examine how variations in tree species diversity and functional traits influenced key ecosystem functions.</span></p> <p><span>In total, 209 mature forest plots measuring 30 x 30 meters were located</span> <span>in six European countries, ranging from boreal to Mediterranean zones, with each representing a major European forest type: Finland (boreal forest), Poland (hemiboreal forest), Germany (temperate deciduous forest), Romania (mountainous deciduous forest), Italy (thermophilous deciduous forest), and Spain Mediterranean mixed forest). Richness levels of one, two, three, four, and five target species were replicated within and across regions.</span></p> <p><span>A major strength of the FunDivEUROPE project was the general philosophy to measure all ecosystem functions in all plots, following the same protocol by the same observers across the six forest types. In each of the 209 plots, 27 ecosystem functions were measured.</span></p> <p><span>Here, we present data on a high number of basic data for each of the 209 plots, describing geographic and geomorphological, as well as soil and bedrock characteristics, climate variables, and several measures of tree diversity. We further show data of the 27 ecosystem functions, which were classified into six groups reflecting basic ecological processes, and which have established links to supporting, provisioning, regulating or cultural ecosystem services. Details about the measurement protocols are provided.</span></p> <p><span>Major results from the FunDivEUROPE project shed light on the fundamental importance of biodiversity in European forests. The project revealed that diverse forests tend to be more resilient to disturbances, sequester more carbon, and provide enhanced diversity of forest-associated taxa. Moreover, the study highlighted the crucial role of particular tree species and functional traits in shaping ecosystem services and functions. The findings of FunDivEUROPE thus offer insights for forest management and conservation practices, advocating for the preservation and restoration of diverse forest ecosystems.</span></p>
