Weightlifting during the COVID-19 pandemic—A transnational study regarding motivation, barriers, and coping of master athletes
<p></p><p>Sport has been heavily impacted by the pandemic for over a year with restrictions and closures of facilities. The main aims of this study are to identify motivation and barriers for an international group of Master weightlifters (ages 35 and up) and analyze age and gender differences in pandemic-related changes to physical activities. A sample of 1051 older athletes, 523 women and 528 men, aged from 35 to 88 years, from Australia, Canada, Europe, and the USA provided responses to an online survey conducted in June 2021. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to examine age, gender, and regional differences about motivation, barriers, and pandemic impact on sport and physical activities. Participants showed enthusiasm for the opportunity to compete despite health challenges with increasing age but faced barriers due to access to training facilities and qualified coaches even before the pandemic. The oldest athletes had the greatest reduction in physical activities during the pandemic. Weightlifters had the opportunity to compete in virtual competitions and 44% would like to see some of these continued in the future, especially women. These findings highlight the benefits of competitive sports and may provide future directions in strength sports for organizations, sports clubs, and coaches.</p><p></p>
COVID-19 anxiety versus well-being - students' sense of support and self-esteem
<p>This study is aimed to evaluate the impact of fear of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of life of university students in Poland. An analysis is made of the correlation of various features of the student cohorts with social support and their self-evaluation, in the context of sensing the chances for success in life and satisfaction from studying online.</p> <p>Fighting the pandemic through socioeconomic closure and remote education is imposing a new routine on university students that restricts the activities important in their development and well-being. The research assumption was made that anxiety (N=973) caused by COVID-19 is a personal experience which is socially and culturally regulated. Culturally, the Polish society shows a very high level of distrust towards institutions and people outside private networks (the "social vacuum" syndrome).</p>
Can volcanic trace elements facilitate Covid-19 diffusion? A hypothesis stemming from the Mount Etna area, Sicily
<p>In December 2019, severe cases of pneumonia of unknown aetiology were reported in Wuhan city, in China. Lately, the pneumonia was related to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the diseases was termed coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). At the end of January 2020, the infection spread all over Italy, but with high infection rates and mortality in the northern part, especially in Lombardy, the most industrialized and polluted region of the country. It is noteworthy that a strong association between severe viral respiratory disease and air pollution has been described. Air pollutant could be solid particles, liquid droplets, or gases and can be of natural origin (such as ash from a volcanic eruption) or released from motor vehicle depletes (carbon monoxide gas) or factories (sulfur dioxide). Volcanic eruptions release large amounts of sulphuric acid, hydrogen sulfide, and hydrochloric acid into the atmosphere. Pulmunary diseases spreadby means of small droplets in thebreath, also called aerosols, and air pollution may facilitate the outside survival of viruses. We suppose that ash and gases emitted from the Mount Etna contributed to air pollution, potentially favouring the major contagion of COVID-19 in the eastern flank of the mountain, as in Catania city. In fact, ash and gases (with regard to radon) are usually particularly intense in winter, with a reduction of emission of specific metals with warmer weather. This is the first paper that elaborates the hypothesis of a potential role of volcanic gases and heavy metals-related air pollution, combined to specific climatic conditions and regional topography, in favouring severe COVID-19 diffusion in Sicily. Clinical and epidemiological studies are needed to support the hypothesis and plan the due prevention and awareness-raising campaigns.</p>
Use of medicinal plants for COVID-19 prevention and respiratory symptom treatment during the pandemic in Cusco, Peru: A cross-sectional survey
<p><b>Background:</b> The burden of the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru has led to people seeking alternative treatments as preventives and treatment options such as medicinal plants. This study aimed to assess factors associated with the use of medicinal plants as preventive or treatment of respiratory symptom related to COVID-19 during the pandemic in Cusco, Peru.<b> </b></p> <p><b>Method: </b>A web-based cross-sectional study was conducted on general public (20- to 70-year-old) from August 31 to September 20, 2020. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire via Google Forms, it consisted of an 11-item questionnaire that was developed and validated by expert judgment using Aiken's V (Aiken's V > 0.9). Both descriptive statistics and bivariate followed by multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess factors associated with the use of medicinal plants for COVID-19 prevention and respiratory symptom treatment during the pandemic. Prevalence ratios (PR) with 95% Confidence Interval (CI), and a P-value of 0.05 was used to determine statistical significance.</p> <p><b>Results: </b>A total of 1,747 respondents participated in the study, 80.2% reported that they used medicinal plants as preventives, while 71% reported that they used them to treat respiratory symptoms. At least, 24% of respondents used medicinal plants when presenting with two or more respiratory symptoms, while at least 11% used plants for malaise. For treatment or prevention, the multivariate analysis showed that most respondents used eucalyptus (p < 0.001 for both), ginger (p < 0.022 for both), spiked pepper (p < 0.003 for both), garlic (p = 0.023 for prevention), and chamomile (p = 0.011 for treatment). The respondents with COVID-19 (p < 0.001), at older ages (p = 0.046), and with a family member or friend who had COVID-19 (p < 0.001) used more plants for prevention. However, the respondents with technical or higher education used less plants for treatment (p < 0.001).</p> <p><b>Conclusion: </b>There was a significant use of medicinal plants for both prevention and treatment, which was associated with several population characteristics and whether respondents had COVID-19.</p>

The landscape of circulating platelet aggregates in COVID-19
<p>A characteristic clinical feature of COVID-19 is the frequent incidence of microvascular thrombosis. In fact, COVID-19 autopsy reports have shown widespread thrombotic microangiopathy characterized by extensive diffuse microthrombi within peripheral capillaries and arterioles in lungs, hearts, and other organs, resulting in multiorgan failure. However, the underlying process of COVID-19-associated microvascular thrombosis remains elusive due to the lack of tools to statistically examine platelet aggregation (i.e., the initiation of microthrombus formation) in detail. Here we report the landscape of circulating platelet aggregates in COVID-19 obtained by massive single-cell image-based profiling and temporal monitoring of the blood of COVID-19 patients (n = 110). Surprisingly, our analysis of the big image data shows the anomalous presence of excessive platelet aggregates in nearly 90% of all COVID-19 patients. Furthermore, results indicate strong links between the concentration of platelet aggregates and the severity, mortality, respiratory condition, and vascular endothelial dysfunction level of COVID-19 patients. </p>

Dataset for Weather drives variation in COVID-19 transmission and detection
<p>This dataset contains the input data for the panel regression and SEIR analyses for the paper "Weather drives variation in COVID-19 transmission and detection", as well as the results of the SEIR calibrations.</p> <p>Under the `inputs` directory, the `panel_all.csv` data provides the compiled data for the core analyses. For information on COVID cases, we use daily reports from the John Hopkins University's COVID-19 Data Repository by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) (Dong et al. 2020). We complement these data with a variety of online sources on confirmed cases at the subnational level.</p> <p>For information on weather, we use ERA 5 reanalysis (Hersbach et al. 2018). The data were downloaded from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) Climate Data Store in January 2021.</p> <p>The governance data (in `inputs/governance`) is drawn from <a href="https://info.worldbank.org/governance/wgi/">https://info.worldbank.org/governance/wgi/</a> for the year 2019.</p> <p>The mapping is done using GADM 3.6, simplified to reduce its size, and stored in `inputs/gadm36_levels_simple`.</p> <p>The result data in the `results` directory represents calibrations of the Bayesian SEIR model:</p> <p> - Files of the form `epimodel-meta-0314...-nodel.csv` include parameter estimates both as initially calibrated (group = "Raw") and after the meta-analysis (group = "Combined"). Paramater estimates are represented by their mean, standard deviation, and five quantiles. Supplementary Materials: Developers Activity Satisfaction and Performance during the COVID-19 Pandemic
<p>Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, the daily lives of software engineers were heavily disrupted as they were abruptly forced to work remotely from home. To better understand and contrast typical working days in this new reality with work in pre-pandemic times, we conducted one exploratory ($N$ = 192) and one confirmatory study ($N$ = 290) with software engineers recruited remotely. Specifically, we build on self-determination theory to evaluate whether and how specific activities are associated with software engineers' satisfaction and productivity. To explore the subject domain, we first ran a two-wave longitudinal study. We found that the time software engineers spent on specific activities (e.g., coding, bugfixing, helping others) while working from home was similar to pre-pandemic times. Also, the amount of time developers spent on each activity was unrelated to their general well-being, perceived productivity, and other variables such as basic needs. Our confirmatory study found that activity-specific variables (e.g., how much autonomy software engineers had during coding) do predict activity satisfaction and productivity but not by activity-independent variables such as general resilience or a good work-life balance. Interestingly, we found that satisfaction and autonomy were significantly higher when software engineers were helping others and lower when they were bugfixing. Finally, we discuss implications for software engineers, management, and researchers. In particular, active company policies to support developers' need for autonomy, relatedness, and competence appear particularly effective in a WFH context.</p>
Large-scale Instance-diverse Synthetic COVID-19 CT Dataset
<p><strong>Dataset Description</strong></p> <p>This dataset consists of 367000 synthetic COVID-19 CT images generated from a new GAN algorithm known as the stacked residual dropout GAN (sRD-GAN) [1]. The 367 input images are acquired from the iCTCF dataset [2] and are stored in 512 × 512 × 3 in .jpg format. The input images [2] and their corresponding synthetic images are included in this dataset. </p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Stacked Residual Dropout GAN (sRD-GAN)</strong></p> <p>The sRD-GAN utilizes a regularization-based strategy in an Image-to-Image (I2I) translation setting to facilitate instance-level diversity. MATRIZ DE EVOCAÇÕES SOBRE MORTE E MORRER DECORRENTES DE COVID-19 POR PROFISSIONAIS DE ENFERMAGEM
<p>Trata-se do banco de dados (matriz) do estudo resumido abaixo:</p> <p><strong>Introdução</strong>:<strong> </strong>Ainda que se saiba que a morte faz parte do ciclo da vida, diante de uma doença com muitos aspectos ainda desconhecidos como a COVID-19, torna-se importante compreender como os trabalhadores de enfermagem representam esse fenômeno, uma vez que são os únicos profissionais de saúde que continuam o cuidado ao indivíduo mesmo após a finitude da vida.<strong> Objetivo</strong>: analisar a estrutura das representações sociais sobre morte e morrer decorrentes de COVID-19 elaboradas por profissionais de enfermagem. <strong>Materiais e métodos</strong>: estudo qualitativo ancorado na vertente estrutural da Teoria das Representações Sociais com ênfase na Teoria do Núcleo Central, desenvolvido junto a 32 profissionais de enfermagem da cidade de Natal, estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. A coleta de dados foi realizada <em>online</em> mediante utilização da técnica de associação livre de palavras. Para a análise dos dados recorreu-se às análises prototípica e de similitude. <strong>Resultados</strong>: o provável núcleo central das representações foi constituído pelos termos tristeza e medo, e a composição do sistema periférico e da zona de contraste reforçam esse núcleo. <strong>Discussão</strong>: o núcleo central das representações dos profissionais de enfermagem sobre morte e morrer decorrentes de COVID-19 se constitui em um <em>Themata</em> polêmico de representação, e destaca os prejuízos à saúde psicossocial dos trabalhadores de enfermagem da linha de frente. <strong>Conclusões</strong>: perante às representações elaboradas sobre a morte e morrer decorrentes de COVID-19, é necessário o desenvolvimento de estratégias de enfrentamento que colaborem para a saúde psicossocial dos trabalhadores de enfermagem.</p>
