Clinical characteristics, risk factors and complications of COVID-19 among critically ill older adults – A case control study
<p><strong>Background</strong>: The older population is often disproportionately and adversely affected during humanitarian emergencies, as has also been seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data regarding COVID-19 in older adults is usually over-generalised and does not delve into details of the clinical characteristics in them. This study was conducted to analyse clinical and laboratory characteristics, risk factors, and complications of COVID-19 between older adults who survived and those who did not.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We conducted a case-control study among older adults(age > 60 years) admitted to the Intensive Care Unit(ICU) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The non-survivors (cases) were matched with age and sex-matched survivors (control) in a ratio of 1: 3. The data regarding socio-demographics, clinical characteristics, complications, treatment, laboratory data, and outcomes were analysed.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: The most common signs and symptoms observed were fever (cases vs controls) (68.92 vs. 68.8%), followed by shortness of breath (62.2% Vs. 52.2%), and cough (47.3% Vs. 60.2%). Our analysis found no association between the presence of any of the comorbidities and mortality. At admission, laboratory markers such as LDH(Lactate Dehydrogenase), WBC(White Blood Count), creatinine, CRP(C-Reactive Protein), D-dimer, ferritin, and IL-6(Interleukin-6) were found to be significantly higher among the cases than among the controls. Complications such as development of seizure, bacteremia, acute renal injury, respiratory failure, and septic shock were seen to have a significant association with non-survivors.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: Hypoxia, tachycardia, and tachypnoea at presentation were associated with higher mortality. The older adults in this study mostly presented with the typical clinical features of COVID-19 pneumonia. The presence of comorbid illnesses among them did not affect mortality. Higher death was seen among those with higher levels of CRP, LDH, D-dimer, and ferritin; and with lower lymphocyte counts.</p>

<p>This data set is part of the public development data for the <a href="http://auc23.grand-challenge.org/">2023 Automated Universal Classification Challenge</a> (AUC23). The data set concerns COVID-19 RT-PCR outcome prediction and prediction of severe COVID-19, defined as death or intubation after one month, from computed tomography (CT). The data set was previously introduced and described by <a href="https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/full/10.1148/radiol.2021210384">Revel, M. et al (2021)</a>. Data was restructured in compliance with the <a href="https://auc23.grand-challenge.org/">AUC23</a> challenge format. The STOIC project collected CT images of 10,735 individuals suspected of being infected with SARS-COV-2 during the first wave of the pandemic in France, from March to April 2020. For each patient in the training set, the dataset contains binary labels for COVID-19 presence based on RT-PCR test results, and COVID-19 severity, defined as intubation or death within one month from the acquisition of the CT scan. Turning to Religion as a Mediator of the Relationship Between Hopelessness and Job Satisfaction During the COVID-19 Pandemic Among Individuals Representing the Uniformed Services or Working in Professions of Public Trust in Poland
<p><strong>Introduction.</strong> During the COVID-19 pandemic individuals performing uniformed service or working in a profession of public trust are particularly exposed to chronic stress. The consequences of stress in turn translate into a decrease in quality of life across various domains, including professional functioning. The perceived mental difficulties can lead to feeling of hopelessness, which in turn can generate a decrease in job satisfaction. Religiosity is a factor which, in stress-inducing conditions, not only stops the spiral of perceived resource losses but also triggers gains in the resources possessed.</p> <p><strong>Aim.</strong> In this study, we tested - in the light of Conservation of resources theory (COR) - whether during the COVID-19 pandemic, the preference for positive religious coping strategies (turning to religion) by people declaring religiosity is a mediator for the relationship between perceived hopelessness and job satisfaction.</p> <p><strong>Methods.</strong> The study covered 238 individuals representing the uniformed services or working in professions of public trust in Poland. The Inventory for Measuring Coping with Stress (MINI-COPE) and The Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) and were employed in the research. <strong>Results.</strong> The mediating role of turning to religion in relationship between perceived hopelessness and job satisfaction was confirmed only in the group of women. The relationship found in this group indicates that perceived hopelessness is alleviated by turning to religion, which at the same time leads to an increase in job satisfaction.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion.</strong> The obtained results prove that it should be standard practice to offer specialist help after potentially traumatic events in the workplace not only in the form of emotional and/or instrumental support but also in the form of spiritual help.</p>

Please note that in the first time period Google provides search data RSVs monthly, while in the other three periods this is done weekly. Data from: Analysis of altered level of blood-based biomarkers in the prognosis of COVID-19 patients
<p><strong>Introduction:</strong> Immune and inflammatory responses developed by the patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) during rapid disease progression result in an altered level of biomarkers. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze levels of blood-based biomarkers that are significantly altered in patients with COVID–19.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>A cross-sectional study was conducted among COVID-19 diagnosed patients admitted to the tertiary care hospital. Several biomarkers – biochemical, hematological, inflammatory, cardiac, and coagulatory – were analyzed and subsequently tested for statistical significance at P<0.01 by using SPSS version 17.0.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> A total of 1,780 samples were analyzed from 1,232 COVID-19 patients (median age 45 years [IQR 33-57]; 788 [63.96%] male). The COVID-19 patients had significantly (99% CI, p<0.001) elevated glucose, urea (p=0.001), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, total white blood cell count (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), interleukin-6 (IL-6), ferritin, D-Dimer, and creatinine phosphokinase-MB (CPK-MB, p=0.004) as compared to control group. However, the levels of total protein, albumin, and platelets were significantly lowered in COVID-19 patients as compared to control group. The elevated levels of glucose, urea, direct bilirubin, WBC, CRP, prothrombin time (PT), D-Dimer, and LDH were significantly associated with in-hospital mortality among COVID-19 patients.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Assessing and monitoring the elevated levels of glucose, urea, ALT, AST, ALP, ferritin, DB, WBC, CRP, PCT, LDH, D-Dimer, PT, and CPK-MB and the lowered levels of total protein, albumin, and platelet could provide a basis for evaluation of improved prognosis and effective treatment in patients with COVID-19.</p>
Data from: Public opinion in Japanese newspaper readers' posts under the prolonged COVID-19 infection spread 2019-2021: Contents analysis using Latent Dirichlet Allocation
<p><span>These data are based on free description from <span>readers' posts on Japanese hardcopy newspaper articles in the public domain</span>. </span><span>Upon searching for "coronavirus," we found 412 reader submissions during the April 7, 2020 to May 25, 2020, 521 during January 8, 2021 to March 21, 2021, 458 during the April 25, 2021 to June 6, 2021, and 519 during July 12, 2021 to September 30, 2021. </span><span>Topics of content were extracted by Latent Dirichlet Allocation, and then calculating the ratio of topic occurrence in each description.</span></p>

A review of HPV and HBV vaccine hesitancy, intention and uptake in the era of social media and COVID-19
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization named vaccine hesitancy as one of the top 10 threats to global health. The impact of hesitancy on uptake of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines was of particular concern, given the markedly lower uptake compared to other adolescent vaccines in some countries, notably the United States. With the recent approval of COVID-19 vaccines coupled with the widespread use of social media, concerns regarding vaccine hesitancy have grown. However, the association between COVID-related vaccine hesitancy and cancer vaccines such as HPV is unclear. To examine the potential association, we performed two reviews using Ovid Medline and APA PsychInfo. Our aim was to answer two questions: (1) Is COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, intention, or uptake associated with HPV or HBV vaccine hesitancy, intention, or uptake? and (2) Is exposure to COVID-19 vaccine misinformation on social media associated with HPV or HBV vaccine hesitancy, intention, or uptake? Our review identified few published empirical studies that addressed these questions. Our results highlight the urgent need for studies that can shift through the vast quantities of social media data to better understand the link between COVID-19 vaccine misinformation and disinformation and its impact on uptake of cancer vaccines.
