Half-hourly gap-filled Northern Hemisphere lake and reservoir carbon flux and micrometeorology, 2006 - 2015
This archive accompanies the manuscript New insights into diel to interannual variation in carbon emissions from lakes and reservoirs We synthesize 171 site-months (and 3,832 site-hours) of high-frequency flux measurements to quantify the magnitudes and temporal variability of direct CO2 fluxes from 13 lakes and reservoirs in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). Constraining short- and long-term variability is necessary to improve detection of temporal changes of CO2 fluxes in response to natural and anthropogenic drivers. These data were collected based on a workshop and open call for eddy covariance observations over lakes organized by Ankur Desai (UW-Madison), Timo Vesala (U Helsinki), and Malgorzata Golub (DKIT).

These data provide a time series of changes in nitrogen fixation rates, and respiration rates for four common PNW species. The purpose is to understand when these rates reach a maximum.
Decomposition of Fine Woody Roots: a Time Series Approach, 1995 to 2006
We examined the effects of species, initial substrate quality, and site differences on woody root decomposition and its nitrogen dynamics in Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) dominated forests in Oregon, U.S.A. using a time series approach. Roots of fourteen species and five size classes were placed in the field to incubate and then collected at pre-planned intervals to determine mass loss and nitrogen content.
Nutrient Concentrations of Vegetation in Small Watersheds at H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest, 2005 to 2006
Past research at the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest has often occurred at different study locations at different times making comparisons between sites difficult. The small watersheds at the Andrews Forest have been the most extensively studied areas at this research forest and this database is intended to provide comparable nutrient information for these watersheds. The samples collected for these nutrient analysis used a uniform method during the summers of 2005 and 2006. Samples were collected throughout each watershed for the following pools; major tree species foliage, major tree species bark, major tree species wood, high shrubs, low shrubs, herbs. These nutrient analysis will compliment the quantification of biomass measurements made over the years in these watersheds.
Lotic Intersite Nitrogen eXperiment II (LINX II): a cross-site study of the effects of anthropogenic land use change on nitrate uptake and retention in 72 streams across 8 different biomes (2003 – 2006).
The LINX II (Lotic Intersite Nitrogen eXperiment) project was designed to quantify the rates and mechanisms of nitrate retention in streams using stable isotope tracer additions. The study encompassed 72 stream reaches spread across 8 North American biomes. Within each biome, 9 streams were selected in three watershed land-use categories: 3 reference, 3 agricultural, and 3 urbanized. The core of the study was a 24-hour release of 15N- labeled nitrate. Prior to the isotope addition, physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the stream were measured. The measurements included, but were not limited to, dissolved nutrient concentrations, dissolved conservative tracer additions (to quantify hydraulic and hyporheic retention, velocity and discharge), standing stocks of primary uptake biota (including suspended and benthic particulate materials) as well as channel dimensions, photosynthetically active radiation, and water temperature. During the isotope release, whole stream rates of ecosystem metabolism were quantified (including quantification of re-aeration coefficients using tracer gas additions), and concentrations of 15N-labeled NO3, NH4, N2 and N2O were measured. Immediately following the isotope addition, 15N uptake by aquatic organisms was quantified by sampling biomass components on the stream bed. The data generated from these 72 stream reaches were used to develop a stream nitrogen retention model for each biome, which was expanded to entire drainage networks to predict nitrogen fluxes. The LINX II study demonstrated how biotic uptake of nitrate and denitrification increased with increasing nitrate concentrations. However, the efficiency of total uptake and denitrification actually declined with increasing nitrate concentrations (such as those seen on agricultural or urbanized streams), yielding higher rates of dissolved nitrogen exports downstream. The datasets presented here consist of the primary data collected by the LINX II study participants.

Treatments included control, and nitrogen and phosphorus amended plots for 10 years, and exclosure plots with and without added nitrogen and phosphorus.

Stream discharge, stage height, temperature, and conductivity of Toolik Inlet during the 2006 study season. Water level was recorded with a Stevens PGIII Pulse Generator and water temperature and conductivity with a Campbell Scientific Model 247 Conductivity (EC) and Temperature probe. A Campbell Scientific CR510 data logger logged the data.

Daily weather and soil temperature data from the Toolik Tussock Experimental plots. In 1990 a Campbell CR21X data logger was installed in block 2 of the Toolik LTER experimental tussock plots. The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Sensors were placed in a control, fertilized, greenhouse, greenhouse fertilized, shade house and shade house fertilized plots.

This dataset contains a summary of environmental and stand characteristics of thinleaf alder dominated along the Tanana River floodplains. Environmental data for each site include terrace height, total thickness of organic layers, depth of uppermost organic layer, soil pH, soil C, N, and P, and soil N/P ratio. Also included are mean thinleaf alder foliar C, N, and P concentrations and foliar N/P ratio for a sumbsample of sites. Estimates of stand age, based on the age of the oldest alder, are available for a subsample of sites. Other stand characteristics include canopy cover, stem density and basal area of thinleaf alder, willows, balsam poplar, and white spruce, and % of alder stems infected with a fungal stem canker at various degrees of disease severity.

This dataset includes the stem diameter of each woody plant >2m tall, by species (or genus), found in each of the thinleaf alder sites we established in the Tanana River floodplains in 2006, as well as an assessment of the severity of canker infection in each thinleaf alder stem. Species (or genus), diameter at breast height (dbh), and severity of canker infection are the variables included here. This dataset can be used in conjunction with a dataset of alder size/age relationships (DN_alder_stand_structure2.xls) to estimate the age structure of alder stands.

Thinleaf alder stands on the Tanana River floodplains, sampled in 2006 and 2007: A subsample of thinleaf alder stems were aged using tree-ring analysis, and the age structures of alder populations were estimated from their size structures (DN_alder_stand_structure1), based on the size/age relationships derived from this dataset. Relationships between disease incidence/severity and size/age were also explored. Included in this dataset are: the stem diameter at breast height (dbh), age of stem at ground level, age at breast height, and disease severity.

This dataset contains a summary of plant species composition and abundance data from thinleaf alder sites along the Tanana River floodplains in 2006. This includes stem counts by species (or genus) for all woody plants less then 2m in height (both separated by dbh size class and combined), stem counts by species for all woody plants greater then 2m in height, percent cover of each forb and graminoid species, mosses, and lichens, and percent of bare ground. The presence or absence of moose and snowshoe hare feces are also indicated.
Alaska 2004 Burns: Densities of tree seedlings after fire; measured in 2006, 2008, 2011, and 2017 by Joint Fire Science Program
This dataset contains counts and densities of tree seedlings that established naturally in the years after the 2004 burns in interior Alaska. Records are from a network of 90 sites established in 2005 along the Steese, Taylor, and Dalton highways as part of a Joint Fire Science Project. Counts are reported here for sample years in 2006, 2008, 2011, and 2017.
Point-count bird censusing: bird abundance and diversity in CAP LTER Phoenix Area Social Survey neighborhoods throughout the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, 2006-2016
The Phoenix Area Social Survey (PASS) parallels the Ecological Survey of Central Arizona (formerly, Survey 200) as a long-term monitoring program of the CAP LTER. Every five years, the PASS research team surveys households in selected neighborhoods in the metropolitan Phoenix area to better understand perceptions, values, and behaviors of several key environmental issues, including water conservation, urban growth, air pollution, land conservation, biodiversity and urban climate change, as well as perceptions about their neighborhoods. The survey was piloted in 2001-2002 in eight neighborhoods in Phoenix with 302 respondents, and grew to over 40 neighborhoods and 800 households in 2005. Bird survey locations were established in each of the PASS neighborhoods, colocated as much as possible with the corresponding ESCA survey location in the neighborhood. Bird surveys were conducted biannualy (spring, winter) approximately the year of and the year after each PASS. In a given season, each bird survey location is visited independently by three birders who count all birds seen or heard within a 15-minute window.
Parameters from discrete bottle samples on a hydrographic CTD (Conductivity Temperature Depth) cast during CCE LTER process cruises in the CCE region, 2006 - 2019 (ongoing).
Hydrographic CTD (Conductivity Temperature Depth) measurements from discrete water samples are taken on individual CTD rosette casts, deployed on CCE Process cruises (since 2006, ongoing) in the Southern California region. Seawater is collected in up to 24 Niskin bottles at specific depths (up to 1000m), determined by the chlorophyll maximum and mixed layer depth as the instrument is lowered through the water column. The samples are filtered and analyzed at sea and used to assess the CTD sensor data quality. Measurements include depth, temperature, salinity, density (sigma theta), oxygen, O2 saturation, PAR (radiation, surface radiation and irradiance), fluorescence and transmission. Salinity checks are performed with a salinometer back at the lab.
Particulate organic carbon and nitrogen measurements at selected depths in the water column in the CCE region since 2006 - 2024 (ongoing).
Water column bottle samples at multiple depths are taken during CCE Process cruises (since 2006, ongoing) at various CTD stations, filtered, and stored at -20°C. Measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) are performed onshore in the lab where samples are acidified, dried and analyzed by high-temperature combustion. The sample and tin capsule react with oxygen and combust at 1000°C, and the sample is broken down, thus converting organic carbon to CO2 and reducing nitrogen oxides to N2 gas. Both gases are measured by thermal conductivity. Samples analyzed within the CCE constrain the mean C:N ratio of small particulates and by difference relative to measured living biomass, the biomass of suspended detritus.
