Burned and unburned moist acidic tundra sites used to estimate C and N loss from the Anaktuvuk River Fire (2007). These sites were sampled in summer of 2008. Unburned sites were used to develop a method for estimating soil organic layer depth and plant biomass, and for determining the characteristics of unburned soil organic layers. In burned sites, we characterized residual organic soils and used biometric measurements of tussocks to reconstruct pre-fire soil organic layer depth. Together, these measurements were used to reconstruct pre-fire soil and plant carbon and nitrogen pools and estimate ecosystem losses of these elements during the fire.

Thinleaf alder stands on the Tanana River floodplains, sampled in 2006 and 2007: A subsample of thinleaf alder stems were aged using tree-ring analysis, and the age structures of alder populations were estimated from their size structures (DN_alder_stand_structure1), based on the size/age relationships derived from this dataset. Relationships between disease incidence/severity and size/age were also explored. Included in this dataset are: the stem diameter at breast height (dbh), age of stem at ground level, age at breast height, and disease severity.

This dataset contain soil and air temperature data from a fire chronosequence near Hess Creek in interior Alaska. Urban heat island: temperature climate trends in central Arizona-Phoenix: period 1948 to 2007
The question was to what degree are summer minimum temperature climate trends in the latter half of the 20th and early part of the 21st century attributed to local urban development as opposed to global climate change? The approach was to select a range of towns/cities in CA, NV, and AZ for which a pairing of sites from a town/city and a site outside that town/city was possible. Climate records for the period 1948 to 2007 were accessed, and statistical time trends determined for the urban vs. rural locations for towns/cities over a considerable range of population (i.e., from 3.5K to 3.2M). The urban heat island effect increased with the natural log of the population, ranging from a total change in minimum monthly temperatures of ca. 1.5F to over 12F over the population range of 3.5K to 3.2M. These rates of change in the 1948-2007 period overwhelm any background global climate change, with the exception of the rural sites and smaller towns. This study for the first time identified the temperature trends of a range of towns and cities in the Sonoran and Mojave deserts to unravel the impact of urban warming from that of global warming in the contemporary global warming era sometimes called the Anthropocene era. Previous literature investigatin these sites were only up to 1984 or did not address the urban warming contribution. The impact depends on land cover and extent of population development over time.
Sediment trap fecal pellets enumerations collected aboard CCE LTER process cruises in the California Current system, 2007, 2008 and 2016.
The collection and enumeration of sinking fecal pellets on CCE LTER Process cruises has been led by Mike Stukel since 2007. Sinking particles are collected in VERTEX-style particle interceptor traps (PIT) with an 8:1 aspect ratio, 70-mm diameter, and a baffle on top comprised of 13 smaller beveled tubes with a similar 8:1 aspect ratio. Tubes are deployed with a formalin-brine for a duration of 2-5 days. After recovery, samples are gently split on a Folsom splitter and typically 3/8 to 1/2 of two separate tubes are utilized for fecal pellet enumeration. After the cruise, samples for fecal pellet enumeration are placed in a settling chamber to allow fecal pellets to settle out. Overlying water is then strained through a 60-um filter to collect any pellets that may have remained in the water. Pellets were then placed on a gridded Petri dish and analyzed using a Zeiss Discovery stereomicroscope. Pellets were separated from other particles and photographed with a dedicated camera. Image processing was then conducted using either Image J or Image Pro to extract area and maximum feret length for each fecal pellet. Pellets were classified by shape and shape-appropriate equations were used to determine the volume of each fecal pellet. Volume was converted to mass using the equations in Stukel et al. (2013). ‘Sample’ refers to which of two samples the fecal pellet was contained within. ‘PelletID’ is the identifier for each fecal pellet in a sample. ‘Conversion Factor’ accounts for the proportion of a sample that was sorted for fecal pellets, as well as the deployment duration and cross-sectional area of the sediment trap. To determine the mass flux of fecal pellets of a certain type: 1) Sum the pellet mass for all fecal pellets of that type in a given sample and 2) multiply by the Conversion factor for that sample. ‘Shape’ is an identifier for the shape of a fecal pellet: 1) ovoid, 2) cylindrical, 3) spherical, 4) tabular, 5) amorphous, 6) ellipsoidal, 7) degraded fecal mater
Exported particulate carbon and nitrogen measurements from 4-day sediment trap deployments in the CCE region, 2007 - 2019 (ongoing).
Sediment traps are used to measure particulate export flux of organic matter from the euphotic zone at various depths (up to 100), so to better understand what flows through the water column regarding food chains in the CCE. Tubes are filled with dense seawater to create a density gradient, and are attached to a wire connected to a drifting float for up to 4 days. Samples from the recovered array of the trap material (fecal matter and other sinking particles - zooplankton removed) are filtered onto precombusted filters for analyses of particulate carbon and nitrogen flux rates for each cycle in the CCE Process cruises (since 2007, ongoing)
