Spillover of an alien parasite reduces expression of costly behaviour in native host species
<p>We used a natural experiment of populations of native red squirrels (<em>Sciurus vulgaris</em>) that were colonised by the alien grey squirrel (<em>Sciurus carolinensis</em>), comparing repeated measurements of red squirrel parasite infection and personality with those taken in sites where only the native species occurred.<br> Using data from 323 arena tests across three experimental (native species and IAS) and three control sites (only native species), we found negative correlations between native species’ activity and infection with <em>Strongyloides robustus</em> in the sites invaded by the alien species. Activity was also negatively correlated with infection by its native helminth (<em>Trypanoxyuris sciuri</em>) but only when grey squirrels were present, while in the red-only sites there was no relationship of <em>T. sciuri</em> infection with any of the personality traits. Moreover, individuals that acquired <em>S. robustus</em> during the study reduced their activity after infection, while this was not the case for animals that remained uninfected.</p>

More widespread alien tree species do not have larger impacts on regeneration of native tree species in a tropical forest reserve
There is insufficient information regarding the factors affecting the environmental impacts of alien species. In particular, little is known about whether there is any relationship between the invasiveness (establishment and spread) of an introduced species and its per-capita impact. We experimentally assessed the relationship between the extent of spread of up to 29 alien plant species and their impact on recruitment of native tree species in Amani Botanical Garden, Tanzania. We also studied the effects of allelochemicals of selected alien on native plant species to assess potential mechanisms of impact. We found no relationship between the extent of spread of an alien tree species and their impact on seed germination, seedling survival and seedling communities of native trees in their understory, and no indication that allelochemicals consistently explain their effects on recruitment of the studied species. These results suggest that extent of spread cannot be used as a proxy for impact. Hence, managers should continue assessing both the spread and the impact of alien species when prioritising alien species for management.

Pollen transfer networks reveal alien species as main heterospecific pollen donors with fitness consequences for natives
<ol> <li>The ecological dynamics of co-flowering communities are largely mediated by pollinators. However, current understanding of pollinator-mediated interactions primarily relies on how co-flowering plants influence attraction of shared pollinators, and much less is known about plan-plant interactions that occur via heterospecific pollen (HP) transfer. Invaded communities in particular can be highly affected by the transfer of alien pollen, but the strength, drivers, and fitness consequences of these interactions at a community scale are not well understood.</li> <li>Here we analyze HP transfer networks in nine coastal communities in the Yucatan Mexico that vary in the relative abundance of invasive flowers to evaluate how HP donation and receipt varies between native and alien plants. We further evaluate whether HP donation and receipt are mediated by floral traits (e.g. display, flower size) or pollinator visitation rate. Finally, we evaluated whether post-pollination success (proportion of pollen tubes produced) was affected by alien HP receipt and whether the effect varied between native and alien recipients.</li> <li>HP transfer networks exhibit relatively high connectance (<i>ca</i>. 15%), suggesting high HP transfer within the studied communities. Significant network nestedness further suggests the existence of species that predominantly act as HP donors or recipients in the community. Species-level analyses showed that natives receive 80% more HP compared to alien species, and that alien plants donate 40% more HP than natives. HP receipt and donation were mediated by different floral traits and such effects were independent of plant origin (native or alien). The proportion of alien HP received significantly affected conspecific pollen tube success in natives, but not that of alien species.</li> <li> <i>Synthesis</i>. Our results suggest that HP transfer in invaded communities is widespread, and that native and alien species play different roles within HP transfer networks, which are mediated by a different suite of floral traits. Alien species, in particular, play a central role as HP donors and are more tolerant to HP receipt than natives—a finding that points to two overlooked mechanisms facilitating alien plant invasion and success within native co-flowering communities.</li> </ol>

Expanded response data from Perrin et al. - Contrasts in Public Perception of the Role of Alien Species in Climate Driven Species Turnover
<p>Responses given by 30 respondents from 3 different interest groups on their attitudes to climate change driven species turnover in Norwegian freshwater lakes.</p> <p>The groups are a) recreational fishers, b) individuals responsible for management decisions regarding freshwater lakes or rivers and c) academics involved in research regarding freshwater lakes or rivers.</p> <p>Use of square brackets indicates details have been altered so as to preserve anonymity of respondents.</p> <p>A total of 30 interviews were conducted between August of 2019 and April of 2020. Interviews lasted anywhere from 10 to 50 minutes. Of the 30 interviews, 16 were conducted in person, with the remaining 14 conducted via web meeting. Interview respondents were chosen using the snowball method, as described by Miles and Huberman <a href="https://paperpile.com/c/6PEtIR/dSUU/?noauthor=1">(1994)</a>. This requires an initial pool of contacts, who subsequently nominate other respondents that are suitable for the study. </p> <p>In compliance with requirements of the Norwegian National Research Ethics Committee, all respondents were given an overview of the topic beforehand, assured that their responses would be anonymous, and informed of the intended use of their responses. All interviews were anonymously recorded and subsequently transcribed verbatim. Any details which might have allowed the individuals to be identified based on descriptions of their roles or locations were removed. As interviews were anonymous, ethics approval from the Norwegian National Research Ethics Committee was not required.</p>

Data from: The effects of climate warming and disturbance on the colonization potential of ornamental alien plant species
1. A large number of alien plant species have been introduced as ornamental garden plants to Europe, but relatively few have become invasive. Low climatic suitability may be limiting the current invasion potential of many alien ornamental species. However, with ongoing disturbance and climate change, this barrier may be reduced for some species. 2. Here we tested how colonization ability (a prerequisite for invasion) of frequently planted alien ornamentals depends on disturbance and heating, and on their species characteristics. We sowed seeds of 37 non-naturalized alien herbaceous garden-plant species into native grassland plots with and without disturbance, and with and without infrared heating lamps. To assess whether their responses differ from those within the regional wild flora, we also sowed 14 native species and 12 naturalized alien species. During two years, we assessed the likelihoods of germination, first-year survival, second-year survival and flowering of these 63 study species. 3. The heating treatment, which also reduced soil moisture, decreased all measures of colonization success, but more so for sown native species than for the non-naturalized and naturalized alien ones. The disturbance treatment increased colonization success, and because heating decreased productivity of the undisturbed grassland plots, it also increased invasibility of these plots. Average colonization success of non-naturalized aliens was reduced by heating, but some species were not affected or performed even better with heating, particularly those with an annual life span and a high seed mass. Winter hardiness improved colonization ability of non-naturalized aliens, but this advantage was reduced in the heated plots. 4. Synthesis. Disturbance increased and heating decreased the absolute colonization success of most of the 63 species sown. However, heating had stronger adverse effects on the resident grassland and sown native species than either type of sown alien species. Together, these results suggest that some alien plants may have greater colonization success relative to native plants under a warmer climate.
Data from: Origin matters: diversity affects the performance of alien invasive species but not of native species
At local scales, it has often been found that invasibility declines with increasing resident plant diversity. However, whether resident community diversity similarly resists invasion by alien versus native species is seldom compared. We examined this issue by invading constructed native plant assemblages that varied in species and functional richness with invasive alien or native Asteraceae species. Assemblages were also invaded with spotted knapweed, Centaurea stoebe, a native European Aster that has been previously used in diversity-invasibility experiments in North America. We also conducted a field survey to explore the generality of the patterns generated from our experimental study. Both experimental and observational work revealed that increasing diversity reduced the performance of alien but not native invaders. Centaurea stoebe invading its native community performed poorly regardless of resident diversity whereas in a parallel previously published study in North America, C. stoebe easily invaded low but not high diversity assemblages. Our results suggest that diversity is an attribute of resident communities that makes them more or less susceptible to invasion by novel invasive alien but not native plant species. 19 pages, 2 tables, 3 figures; Appendix
