Impact of climate change on alpine mass movement - animated drawing
<p>Observed and expected changes of climate-change driven alpine mass movements in the European Alps between colder and warmer conditions. Rising temperatures primary cause for the observed increase of rockfall in alpine regions. Above treeline, increased sediment availability and increased intense precipitation lead to increased debris-flow activity, potentially in locations without historical precedence. Warmer winters are leading scarcer snow conditions at low elevations and a transient state of increased snowfall at high elevations. This shift is leading to more wet snow avalanches, fewer and smaller avalanches at low and mid elevations, and increased avalanche activity at high elevations. No trends have been detected for rockfall below treeline, and findings for debris flows are highly variable. Expected, but not yet visible in observations, are more rock avalanches (despite a measurable increase of rock temperatures), changing ice avalanche activity (despite higher ice temperatures), deteriorating protection forests. Elements not related to mass movements (e.g., human infrastructure, ecosystems) are shown to remain constant, though in reality they may evolve faster than the discussed mass movements.</p>

This study examined the impact of climate on widowhood and divorce, and the subsequent effects on individual vital rates and life-history outcomes over 54 years in a snow petrel (Pagodroma nivea) population. We found that environmental conditions can affect pair-bond dynamics both directly and indirectly. Divorce was adaptive, occurring more frequently after breeding failure and leading to improved breeding success. Divorce probabilities also increased under severe climatic conditions, regardless of prior breeding success, supporting the "Habitat-mediated” mechanisms. Generally, pair-bond disruptions reduced subsequent vital rates and lifetime outcomes. Climate forecasts from an Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Model projected increased male widowhood rates due to decreased sea ice negatively affecting female survival, despite considerable uncertainty. These findings highlight the importance of environmentally induced changes in demographic and pair-bond disruption rates as crucial factors shaping demographic responses to climate change. </p> <p>Funding information: <br>This work was supported by the National Science Foundation (OPP 1840058) to SJ and RS. Since 1963, an annual long-term monitoring study has been conducted. Adults and chicks were leg-banded with stainless-steel bands, with adult sex determined by vocalization and relative size. <p>These data are a set of annual-mean values for 5yr simulations using the MIROC6-SPRINTARS global aerosol-climate model with different treatments of precipitation (i.e., diagnostic and prognostic). The outputs include diagnostics from the satellite simulator COSP2.<br>The data are used in the manuscript entitled "Evaluation of climatic impacts of ice nucleating particles through precipitation process with a GCM". All data used in this study are available from the corresponding author upon request.</p>
Projected impacts of climate and land use changes on the habitat of Atlantic Forest plants in Brazil
<p>Aim:<b> </b>To provide novel evidence on the average impact of climate and land use changes on habitat suitability for tropical plants and to test previous conclusions on the relative importance of these two drivers in shaping future availability of habitat for tropical plant species.</p> <p>Location<b>: </b>Brazil's Atlantic Forest domain.</p> <p>Time period: Plant occurrences recorded between 1960 and 2014. Baseline climate from 1960-2000 and land use from 2015. Projected scenarios of climate for 2041-2060 and land use for 2050.</p> <p>Major taxa studied: Angiosperms.</p> <p>Results: Our results suggest that climate change alone will, surprisingly, have only a modest negative impact on the mean habitat suitability, decreasing it by 2% (median = -5% to -7%, variation associated with scenarios). Land use change alone had a more consistent negative impact on habitat suitability, causing mean and median reductions of 4% to 6%. When the effects of climate and land use are combined, the mean habitat suitability was reduced by 4% (median = -9% to -11%).</p> <p>Main conclusions: The combined impacts of climate and land use changes were substantial, although smaller than expected. Habitat suitability decreased for most species, but it increased substantially for some species, suggesting that the distribution of impacts across species is markedly right skewed. The impacts were typically detrimental to small-ranged species and neutral or beneficial to widespread species. Land use change rather than climate change will likely cause more losses to the habitat of Atlantic Forest plant species within the next several decades.</p>

Dataset of impacts of weather and climate services on farming in Burkina Faso 2019 and 2020
<p>The dataset contains the results of two surveys realized in 2019 and 2020 in the Municipality of Tenado, Burkina Faso. The surveys were conducted in October 2019 and in November 2020 using structured questionnaires translated and administered in the local language by trained enumerators. Moreover, yield plots were placed in farmers’ fields and yield was measured on site. The sample at the Tenado site consisted for each survey in approximately 300 farmers (150 treated and 150 control) in 12 villages for each year. The treatment is the training in the use of Weather and Climate Services in agriculture. The control group is random and represents the entire population. The treatment group is also random, from the participants in training. Labor cost is accounted as the opportunity costs of working time considering that 1,500 FCFA is the daily wage in agriculture. Income was computed multiplying yield by the price of sorghum and the gross benefit is the income minus the costs.</p>

The versatility of pulses: Are consumption and consumer perceptions in different European countries related to the actual climate impact of different pulse types? Author links open overlay panel
<p>Pulses support sustainable production and consumption. Their culinary versatility creates a wide range of possibilities for new products, bridging consumers’ preparation barriers. However, this potential is often intangible for consumers who have little knowledge about plant-based foods. Based on an online survey in Denmark, Germany, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom (<em>N</em> = 4,226), this study aimed to investigate consumer utilization and perception of pulses as a versatile, low-carbon food relative to objective life cycle assessment (LCA) measures of 12 pulse types. The most popular pulse types, with specific preferences across countries, were lentils, kidney beans, and chickpeas, typically consumed at home and purchased in dried or canned form. Respondents associated pulses with being healthy and natural, but sustainability was not an essential attribute related to the perception of pulses. LCA revealed a low environmental impact caused by pulse production and consumption, with marginal variations between types and produce. Respondents were unaware of the nuances in the environmental impact of different pulse types, generally perceiving uncommon pulses to be relatively more sustainable than others. In conclusion, a low consumption combined with a misconception of pulses’ environmental impact may demand different promotional strategies including clear communication to inform consumers.</p>

CESM experiments for "Oceanic repeaters boost the global climatic impact of the Tibetan Plateau"
<p>This dataset is the outputs and codes of CESM experiments performed by the authors for their study titled, "Oceanic repeaters boost the global climatic impact of the Tibetan Plateau", which was submitted to Science Bulletin. There were six CESM experiments, namely amip-hist, amip-TIP-nosh, amip-TIP-alb0.5, amip-TIP-sh0.5, cmip-hist, and cmip-TIP-sh0.5. The CESM model (version 2.1.3) was provided by NCAR/UCAR. In all the experiments, hist (historical) experiments were control runs, whereas the TIP (Tibetan–Iranian Plateau coupling system) -labeled experiments were sensitivity runs.</p>
