Flights of a Multirotor UAS with Structural Faults: Failures on Composite Propeller(s)

<p>Data acquired from several flights of a custom-fabricated Hexacopter UAS with composite structure (carbon fiber arms and central hub) and composite (carbon fiber) propellers is presented here. The Hexacopter was assembled from a commercially available kit (Tarot 690) and was flown in manual and autonomous mode; take-offs and landings were under manual control and the bulk of the flight tests were conducted with the Hexacopter in a &ldquo;Position Hold&rdquo; mode. All flights were flown within the UAS flight cage at Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology at Saint Louis University, for approximately 5 minutes each. Several failure conditions (different types of manually induced) on the composite (carbon fiber) propellers were tested, including failures on up to two propellers. The data set described in this article contains flight data from the onboard flight controller (Pixhawk) as well as three 3-axis accelerometers mounted on the arms of the Hexacopter UAS. The data is included as supplemental material.</p>

Prediction and Rehabilitation of Highway Embankment Slope Failures in Changing Climate

<p>Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 17GTLSU04. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;Highway slopes constructed with clayey soil are prone to desiccation cracks due to wetting and drying weather cycle, which allows greater moisture infiltration into the embankment from precipitation. Fissures formed due to extended wetting and drying cycles allow water to seep deeper into the soil than surficial wetting and increase the water content. This increases the moisture content in the soil and results in reduction in shear strength to the fully softened strength. On the other hand, development of desiccation cracks and reduction of the soil matric suction ultimately result in higher hydraulic conductivity value which causes development of higher pore water pressure. As the moisture content of the clayey soil increases, the strength reduces to a fully softened shear strength that causes frequent shallow and medium slope failures that are oriented approximately parallel to the surface of the embankment. Hence, the fully softened strength of Louisiana and Texas soils need to be quantified to develop a predictive tool for identifying high-risk zones of highway embankments. Given the documented failures in Texas and Louisiana, this research project is focused on investigating past failures to develop lessons learned and guidelines that can be implemented in the predictive framework.&quot;</p>

The Ubiquitin Ligase WWP1 Contributes to Shifts in Matrix Proteolytic Profiles and a Myocardial Ageing Phenotype with Diastolic Heart Failure

<p><strong><em>Aims</em></strong>. Ubiquitylation is a key event that regulates protein turnover, and induction of the ubiquitin ligase E3 WWP1 has been associated with age. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) commonly occurs as a function of age and can cause heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction (EF; HFpEF). We hypothesized that overexpression (O/E) of WWP1 in the heart would cause LVH as well as functional and structural changes consistent with the ageing HFpEF phenotype.</p> <p><strong><em>Methods and Results.</em></strong> Global WWP1 O/E was achieved in mice (n=11) and echocardiography (40 MHz) performed to measure LV mass, EF, Doppler velocities (early-E, late/atrial-A), myocardial relaxation (E&rsquo;), and isovolumetric relaxation time (IVRT) at 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Age matched wild type animals (n=15) were included as referent controls. LV EF was identical (60+1% vs 60+1%, p&gt;0.90) with no difference in LV mass (67+3 vs 75+5, p&gt;0.25) at 4 weeks. LVH and diastolic dysfunction occurred with WWP1 O/E wherein LV mass increased by over two-fold, E/A fell (impaired passive filling), and E/E&rsquo; was lower and IVRT prolonged (impaired LV relaxation). Collagen percent area increased by over two-fold with WWP1 O/E and increased expression of determinants of fibrosis and growth (qPCR) were also concomitantly increased.</p> <p><strong><em>Conclusion.</em></strong> Inducing WWP1 expression caused LVH with significant diastolic dysfunction, consistent with the HFpEF phenotype. Thus, targeting the WWP1 pathway may be a novel therapeutic target for this intractable form of HF associated with ageing</p>

Filial cannibalism leads to chronic nest failure of eastern hellbender salamanders (Cryptobranchus alleganienesis)

<p><span>These data and code support the results in our accompanying manuscript. In species that provide parental care, parents will sometimes cannibalize their own young. Here, we quantified the frequency of whole-clutch filial cannibalism in a species of giant salamander (eastern hellbender; <em>Cryptobranchus</em> <em>alleganienesis</em>) that has experienced precipitous population declines with unknown causes. We used underwater, artificial nesting shelters deployed across a gradient of upstream forest cover to assess the fates of 182 nests at 10 sites over 8 years. We found strong evidence that nest failure rates increased at sites with low riparian forest cover in the upstream catchment. At several sites, reproductive failure was 100%, mainly due to cannibalism by the caring male. The high incidence of filial cannibalism at degraded sites was not explained by evolutionary hypotheses for filial cannibalism based on adult body condition or low reproductive value of clutches. Instead, larger clutches at degraded sites were most vulnerable to cannibalism.  We hypothesize that high frequencies of filial cannibalism of large clutches in areas with low forest cover could be related to changes in water chemistry or siltation that influence parental physiology or that reduce viability of eggs. Importantly, our results identify a possible mechanism contributing to population declines and observed geriatric age structure in this imperiled species.</span></p>

[Northwest Borneo Simulations] Discrete-Continuous Model for Submarine Mass Failure-induced Tsunamigenesis

<p>Recent studies on submarine landslides, also known as submarine mass failures (SMF), show that they can be sources of hazardous tsunamis. In this study, a novel modelling technique which describes submarine mass failure-induced tsunamigenesis was developed. This was achieved through developing a cellular automata model, using ultradiscretization with the rules derived from the two-dimensional diffusion equation, to describe the discrete elements of the SMF such as rockfalls. Then, it will be coupled, using its displacement vector output, to the depth-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in generating tsunami waves.<br> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br> When the coupled model was applied and validated to an actual event, simulation results on the Anak Krakatau Flank Collapse show that the model was able to achieve 90.10% accuracy. On the other hand, when the model was applied to a potentially catastrophic scenario on the Northwest Borneo Trough using the calibrated parameters of the validation data, the simulation results suggest that there could be a wave height of 8.76 meters with 23.99 m/s propagating near shorelines of Balabac Island, Palawan; while the tsunami wave run-up height on Brunei and Sabah are likely to be 1.14 meters and 2.18 meters, respectively. Additionally, the model experiments suggest that the coupled model communicates well and is able to provide high percentages of total released energy transferred, 90.56% on Anak Krakatau Flank Collapse simulation and 92.91% on Northwest Borneo Trough simulation.</p>

Data from: Interactions between beech and oak seedlings can modify the effects of hotter droughts and the onset of hydraulic failure

<p><span>Mixing species with contrasting resource use strategies could</span><span> reduce forest vulnerability to extreme events. Yet, how species diversity affects seedling hydraulic responses to heat and drought, including mortality risk, is largely unknown.</span></p> <p><span>Using open-top chambers, </span><span>we assessed how, over several years, species interactions (monocultures vs. mixtures) modulate heat and drought impacts on the hydraulic traits </span><span>of juvenile European beech and pubescent oak. Using modelling, we estimated species interaction effects on timing to drought-induced mortality and the underlying mechanisms driving these impacts. </span></p> <p><span>We show that mixtures mitigate adverse heat and drought impacts for oak (less negative </span><span>leaf water potential, higher stomatal conductance, and delayed stomatal closure) but enhance them for beech (lower water potential and stomatal conductance, narrower leaf safety margins, faster tree mortality). Potential underlying mechanisms include oak's larger canopy and higher </span><span>transpiration</span><span>, allowing for quicker exhaustion of soil water in mixtures.</span></p> <p><span>Our findings highlight that diversity has the potential to alter the effects of extreme events, which would ensure that some species persist even if others remain sensitive. Among the many processes driving diversity effects, differences in canopy size and transpiration associated to the stomatal regulation strategy seem the primary mechanisms driving mortality vulnerability in mixed seedling plantations.</span></p>
