Microarthropod and nematode effects on soil nitrogen availability in fluffgrass mesocosms at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1986-1987

This data package contains soil nitrogen measurements taken over a 12-week interval in soils treated to exclude microarthropods and nematodes. The purpose of this study was to test if changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes results in changes in soil nitrogen availability. In 1986 and 1987, 110 fluff grass (Dasyochloa pulchella) plants were collected from the Jornada Basin College Ranch and transplanted into pots, which contained 5 replicates of each treatment. The 4 treatments include 1) control, 2) NEMACUR (to exclude nematodes), 3) chlordane (to exclude mites) and 4) NEMACUR + Chlordane. Each was sampled 5 times during a 12-week interval after the initial treatment. Pots were watered weekly to maintain conditions at field capacity. Samples were taken from the rhizosphere and analyzed for NO3(-)- N, NH4(+)-N, Inorganic-N, microbial-N, % H20, % organic matter, root biomass, and nematode density. This study was completed in 1987.

Effects of microarthropod exclusion and water amendments on fluffgrass rhizosphere nitrogen mineralization potential at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 1987

This data package contains data on soil nitrogen mineralization potential in the rhizosphere of fluffgrass (Dasyochloa pulchella) plants from 1987. This study was conducted at the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center to test how watering, and changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes, impacts fluffgrass growth and nutrient cycling. Twenty 6 x 6 m plots were established with a 3 m buffer between plots. Five plots were randomly assigned to one of four treatments:1) Chlordane (to exclude microarthropods), 2) Chlordane and water, 3) Water, and 4) Control. Three randomly located subsamples were taken from each plot and consisted of the fluff grass plant, a 10 cm in diameter and 15 cm deep soil core centered on each plant. Samples were incubated for 0, 2, 4, or 8 weeks. This data set contains information on the incubation time, soil nitrate (NO3-), soil ammonium (NH4+), and soil water content for each subsample. This data were collected in May 1987 and the study is complete.

This data package contains fluff grass (Dasyochloa pulchella) tissue nitrogen data from plants collected at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, USA, in 1987. The purpose of this study was to test how watering, and changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes, results in changes in fluff grass growth and nitrogen acquisition. Twenty 6 x 6 m plots were established with a 3 m buffer between plots. Five plots were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: 1) Chlordane to exclude microarthropods, 2) Chlordane and water, 3) Water, and 4) Control. For four consecutive months, randomly selected fluff grass plants were collected from each plot and the flowers, green leaves, and grey leaves were separated for total nitrogen digestion analysis and dry weight measurement. This data set consists of sampling date, treatment, plant matter, total nitrogen (mg/g) and dry weight (g). Data was collected in 1987 and the study is complete.

This data package contains fluff grass (Dasyochloa pulchella) growth measurements taken during the growing period in 1986 (March, July, and September). The purpose of this study was to test how watering, and changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes, results in changes in fluff grass growth. Twenty 6 x 6 m plots were established with a 3 m buffer between plots. Five plots were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: 1) Chlordane to exclude microarthropods, 2) Chlordane and water, 3) Water, and 4) Control. Within each plot, fluff grass plants were permanently tagged for continuous measurements of plant diameter and height during the three sampling dates. Data consists of the date of measurement, the longest diameter (cm), the diameter (cm) perpendicular to the longest diameter, and height (cm). This study was completed in September 1986.

This data package contains data on nitrogen availability (as nitrate, NO3-), measured with ion exchange resin bags, in fluffgrass (Dasyochloa pulchella) rhizosphere soil from 1986-1987. This study was conducted at the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center to test how watering, and changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes, impacts fluffgrass growth and nutrient cycling. An ion exchange resin bag technique (Binkley 1984, Lajtha 1988) was used to determine nitrate availability. Twenty 6 x 6 m plots were established with a 3 m buffer between plots. Five plots were randomly assigned to one of four treatments:1) Chlordane (to exclude microarthropods), 2) Chlordane and water, 3) Water, and 4) Control. Ten anion exchange bags were placed in the rhizosphere of a fluffgrass plant in each plot. Bags were left in the field 3 months, collected, brought to the lab and analyzed for available nitrate (NO3-) using an automated cadmium reduction procedure. The data table contains bag collection date, treatment, and NO3- (mg/kg) concentration. This study is complete.

This study was conducted at the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center to test how watering, and changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes, impacts fluffgrass growth and nutrient cycling. This data package contains data on microarthropods, nematodes, fluff-grass (Dasyochloa pulchella) growth, and root nitrogen in samples from study plots sampled approximately monthly between May 1986 and August 1987 at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico USA. The purpose of this study was to test how watering, and changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes, results in changes in fluff grass growth and root nitrogen. Twenty 6 x 6 m plots were established with a 3 m buffer between plots. Five plots were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: 1) Chlordane to exclude microarthropods, 2) Chlordane and water, 3) Water, and 4) Control. At monthly intervals, randomly selected fluff grass plants were collected from each plot. This data set consists of plant diameters (cm), mite soil weight (g), root weight (g), nematode soil weight (g), root total nitrogen (mg/g), and nematode number. This study was completed in November 1987.

This data set consists of sampling date, treatment, subsample number, and total nitrogen (mg/kg). This study was completed in January 1987.

This data set consists of the date of collection, collection site, leaf total nitrogen, stem total nitrogen, flower total nitrogen, pod total nitrogen, leaf total phosphorus, stem total phosphorus, flower total phosphorus, and pod total phosphorus. Data from this study was collected in 1986. Further data was collected in 1987, but had differing attributes and is therefore published in a separate data package (knb-lter-jrn.210386009).

Nitrate, ammonium, and water content of mesquite root tube soil from three habitats at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1987

This data package contains data on measured root tube soil nutrients from soil cores collected under mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa)at three habitat types of the Jornada Experimental Range and New Mexico State University College Ranch. These habitat types include: 1)playa, 2)dunes, and (4)grassland. Soil core samples were collected in 1987 by hand-augering a reference core and a root tube core. Subsamples were analyzed for nitrate, ammonium, and soil moisture contents. This data set consists of the date of collection, collection site, nitrate concentration, ammonium concentration, and percent soil moisture. Collected variables also include treatments (irradiation and nematicide) that are not well-documented at this time. Data collection was completed in 1987.

Surface soil nitrogen analyses under mesquite bush canopies and interspaces at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1986

This data package contains soil nitrogen data for soils collected under, or near, mesquite at the Jornada Basin LTER site (LTER-I and II) in 1986. The purpose of this study was to analyze nitrogen concentration in soils associated with mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa). The mesquite soils were sampled at 4 habitats - playa, coppice dune, arroyo, and grassland. An ecosystem dominated by the non-legume, Larrea tridentata, and lacking mesquite was included as a reference. Samples were taken from two depths (0-15cm, 15-30cm) for three beneath canopy positions (stem base, mid-canopy, and edge of canopy) and one non-vegetated interzone position for each shrub. Four shrubs were sampled at each site. The soils were analyzed for Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), N03 nitrate, NH4 ammonium. The data set was collected on October 1, 1986 and this study is now complete.

Grassland and mesquite shrubland soil nitrogen mineralization potential from leaching soil incubations at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1986

This data package contains data on soil nitrogen mineralization potential in a variety of grass and mesquite habitats during the early years of the Jornada Basin LTER project (I-II). Soil cores were collected from Jornada Experimental Range and Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) lands in May 1986, and observed in a leaching incubation study. The purpose of this study was to measure inorganic soil nitrogen in the context of the shift from grasslands to mesquite dominated ecosystems. Sites include fluff grass (Dasyochloa pulchella), black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda), Sporobolus/Gutierrezia, playa mesquite (Prosopsis glandulosa), and arroyo mesquite ecosystem types. Soil samples were collected on May 12-13, 1986 within the clumps of grass or beneath mesquite at each site, generally 20 cm deep or to the hard pan (whichever came first). During the incubation study, inorganic nitrogen leaching was measured for 28 weeks for each sample. This study is complete.

Daily precipitation from a network of weighing rain gauges on the Jornada Experimental Range (Jornada Basin LTER), 1976-2011.

This completed dataset contains daily precipitation measurements from a network of weighing rain gauges (Belfort Universal Precipitation Gauges, Series 5-780) at 58 locations on the Jornada Experimental Range in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA between January 1976 and December 2011. Locations and the dates during which data were collected were generally project-oriented. Temporal coverage per location is quite variable and ranges between 1,647 and 13,024 days. The network was maintained by USDA Agricultural Research Service personnel. After 2011 the remaining weighing rain gauges were replaced by tipping bucket gauges and those data are available separately.

Pre-dawn water potential of leaves from reduced and enhanced precipitation treatments at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2007-2008

This data package contains pre-dawn water potential data for leaves collected from mesquite shrubs and black grama grasses at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 2007-2008. The purpose of this study was to quantify ecophysiological performance of shrubs and grasses in the context of precipitation manipulations. One mesquite and one black grama leaf from each plot (n = 20 plots; 5 PPT treatments X 4 replicate plots/treatment) were measured 5 times beginning July 2007 and ending in August 2008. The precipitation treatments consisted of +/-80%, +/-50%, and ambient/control. Leaves were excised from plants and immediately measured for water potential (MPa) with a pressure chamber at least 0.5 h before dawn. The data set is complete.

Perennial grass recovery following livestock overgazing and shrub removal: an experiment at the Jornada Experimental Range (Jornada Basin LTER), 1996-2016

The objective of this ongoing study is to determine the effect of cattle grazing and shrub removal on the decline and recovery of perennial grasses in a mesquite-invaded black grama grassland on sandy soils in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. The experiment was implemented as a randomized complete block with 3 levels of grazing (summer, winter, and control) and 2 levels of shrub treatment (shrub removal and control) in each of 3 replicate blocks. The 18 experimental units are 0.5 ha (70 x 70 m) exclosures constructed in a mesquite-invaded black grama grassland in the southwest portion of the Jornada Experimental Range in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. Vegetation sampling was conducted with the line-point intercept method. Initial pre-treatment sampling occurred in 1996. Grazing treatments removed 65-80% of aboveground perennial grass biomass over 24-36 hour periods in each of four years from summer 1996 to winter 2000; shrub removal occurred during this time as well. No livestock grazing or shrub removal have occurred since 2000. Post-treatment sampling occurred in 2002, 2009, and 2016.

Drought and herbivory effects on woody plant seedling establishment and grass competition in the Jornada Basin, 2016-2018

This dataset contains observations of seedling establishment and grass competition under precipitation manipulations, and herbivory and granivory exclosure treatments, in the Chihuahuan desert of southern New Mexico, USA. The experiment took place at the Jornada Basin LTER site. We used a rainfall manipulation system and various herbivore exclosures in a factorial design, to test hypotheses about how precipitation (PPT), competition between grasses and shrub seedlings, and predation affect the germination and first-year survival of Mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa), a shrub that has encroached in Southern Great Plains and Chihuahuan Desert grasslands. Data collected in these files include seedling counts in each treatment over observation years 2016 to 2018. This data supports the related publication in Ecological Applications (Weber-Grullon et al. in press). The dataset is complete.
