Data from: The skull and endocranium of a Lower Jurassic ichthyosaur based on digital reconstructions

Even after 200 years of study, some details of the cranial anatomy of ichthyosaurs, one of the most successful groups of marine vertebrates in the Mesozoic, are still unclear. New information on the braincase, palate and occiput are provided from three-dimensional scans of an exceptionally preserved ichthyosaur ('Hauffiopteryx' typicus) skull from the Toarcian (183–174 Ma, Lower Jurassic) of Strawberry Bank, England. This ichthyosaur has unusual, hollow, tubular hyoid bars. The occipital and braincase region is fully reconstructed, creating the first digital cranial endocast of an ichthyosaur. Enlarged optic lobes and an enlarged cerebellum suggest neuroanatomical adaptations that allowed it to be a highly mobile, visual predator. The olfactory region also appears to be enlarged, suggesting that olfaction was more important for ichthyosaurs than has been assumed. Phylogenetic analysis suggests this ichthyosaur is closely related to, but distinct from, Hauffiopteryx, and positioned within Thunnosauria, a more derived position than previously recovered. These results further our knowledge of ichthyosaur cranial anatomy in three dimensions and provide a platform in which to study the anatomical adaptations that allowed ichthyosaurs to dominate the marine realm during the Mesozoic

Data from: The 'Last Hurrah of the Reigning Darwinulocopines'? Ostracoda (Arthropoda, Crustacea) from the Lower Jurassic Moenave Formation, Arizona and Utah, USA

An ostracod fauna is described from lacustrine sediments of the Hettangian, Lower Jurassic Whitmore Point Member of the Moenave Formation. The Moenave is well known for its rich, Late Triassic?–Early Jurassic fossil record, which includes fossil fishes, stromatolites, ostracods, spinicaudatans and a diverse ichnofauna of invertebrates and vertebrates. Four ostracod species, all belonging to the suborder Darwinulocopina, were recovered from these sediments: Suchonellina globosa, Suchonellina stricta, Whipplella? sp. 1 and Whipplella? sp. 2. The diversity and composition of the Whitmore Point Member ostracod fauna agree with previous interpretations about Lake Dixie and nearby paleoenvironments as shallow lakes, where darwinulocopine species which survived the effects of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province and the subsequent End-Triassic extinction quickly recolonized these areas thanks to asexual reproduction by parthenogenesis. The Lake Dixie region, in its geographical isolation, may represent the last episode of darwinulocopine dominance in non-marine environments before the Late Jurassic diversification of the cypridocopine/cytherocopine modern ostracods.

Data from: Lower Jurassic foraminifera from the Llanbedr (Mochras Farm) Borehole, North Wales, UK

The complete, fully cored Lower Jurassic (Hettangian, Sinemurian, Pliensbachian, Toarcian) succession from the Llanbedr (Mochras Farm) Borehole, North Wales, the thickest known British section, has yielded a diverse and well preserved foraminiferal fauna, comprising 270 species and subspecies which are described and illustrated. An additional nine taxa, not encountered at Mochras, are also described. This typical European Boreal Atlantic foraminiferal fauna is dominated by members of the Lagenida, with the Ceratobuliminoidea, Miliolida, Spirillinina, Involutinina, Buliminida and Textulariida as important accessory groups. The Ceratobuliminoidea and Miliolida are unusually diverse, with Reinholdella and Ophthalmidium being notably abundant. The presence of the family Oberhauserellidae is significant. A benthonic foraminiferal biozonation scheme for the Lower Jurassic, comprising 16 biozones and tied to the standard ammonite-based chronostratigraphy, is described in detail. It is recognizable across the northern European Boreal province and as far south as Spain and France, and is applicable to subsurface hydrocarbon exploration of the UK continental shelf and onshore Europe. Three new genera (Duoplanum, Extonia and Haynesella) are described as well as 19 new species (Citharina sherringtoni, Duoplanum inaequale, D. leve, Glomospirella liassica, Lagena? haeusleri, L. semisulcata, Lagenammina pseudofusiformis, L. tangentia, Loxostomum liassicum, Marginulina turneri, Neobulimina bangae, Nodosaria pseudoclaviformis, Ophthalmidium strictum, Reinholdella? mochrasensis, R. robusta, Reussoolina? lacrimaforma, Semiiinvoluta excelsa, Tubinella pseudoinornata, and Vinelloidea lordi), and 10 new subspecies (Berthelinella involuta striata, Ichthyolaria terquemi barnardi, I. terquemi mediumcostata, Lenticulina varians barnardi, Loxostomum liassicum liassicum, L. liassicum teres, Ophthalmidium macfadyeni tenuiloculare, Paralingulina cernua ssp. A, Reinholdella margarita dorsoplana, and R. pachyderma humilis). Two further species are renamed as Nodosaria whittakeri and Paralingulina paranodosaria .

Data from: A lower jaw of Palaeoxonodon from the Middle Jurassic of the Isle of Skye, Scotland, sheds new light on the diversity of British stem therians

The Middle Jurassic was a key interval of mammalian evolutionary history that witnessed the diversification of the therian stem-group. Great Britain has yielded a significant record of mammalian fossils from this interval, represented by numerous isolated jaws and teeth from the Bathonian of Oxfordshire and the Isle of Skye. This record captures a key period in early cladotherian evolution, with amphitheriids, peramurans and "stem zatherians" displaying intermediate talonid morphologies that document the evolutionary assembly of tribosphenic molars. We present a mandible with near-complete dentition from the late Bathonian (ca. 167.4–166.5 Ma) Kilmaluag Formation, near Elgol, Skye, representing the amphitheriid Palaeoxonodon ooliticus, previously known only from isolated teeth. The specimen sheds new light on the taxonomic diversity of British Middle Jurassic stem therians, as the morphological variation within the preserved tooth row encompasses that previously ascribed to three distinct species within two genera: Palaeoxonodon ooliticus, P. freemani, and Kennetheridium leesi. Thus, both P. freemani and Kennetheridium leesi are subjective junior synonyms of P. ooliticus. The dental formula of P. ooliticus (i4:c1:p5:m5) is intermediate between the primitively larger postcanine count (p5:m6-7) of Amphitherium and the reduced number in peramurans and tribosphenidans (p5:m3). Phylogenetic analyses of P. ooliticus generally confirm a close affinity with Amphitherium, but highlight the lack of strong empirical support for hypothesized patterns of divergences among early cladotherians.
