Strawberry fields forever: that is, how many grams of plastics are used to grow a strawberry?
<p>In the agricultural sector, plastic is one of the most important tools for improving the managerial and economic performance of companies. The horticultural production under protected cultivation, in particular, makes abundant use of plastic polymers. Polymers that mostly turn into waste. This study aims to identify the main characteristics and factors affecting the decision of farmers operating in the strawberry production sector to recycle the plastic material used on-farm and quantify the plastic used in relation to the different types of materials used. Data come from one of the Italian most specialized areas in the strawberry sector, Marsala. Main findings show that behind a typical 250-gram basket of strawberries, the production process has generated more than 20 grams of plastic waste, consisting of different polymers. In comparison to what was thought it is exactly in the phase of acquisition of the factors of production, and in their transformation that it is possible to intervene to reduce the quantities of plastic polymers that are introduced into the soil. Our main result adds to previous knowledge that the informed producer (awareness) is the key to solving the problem. Improving environmental sustainability, and creating a circular economy.</p>
Investigating Multi and Many-Objective Metaheuristics to Support Software Integration Testing
<p> In spite of the fact that Search-Based Software Testing (SBST) is a very appealing field today, there are few studies that deal with software integration testing and, even so, most of these works are not truly related to the generation of test cases to this testing level. In this paper, we present a method, InMeHy, which aims at investigating the use of metaheuristics to derive integration test cases based on C++ source code. A graph is created based on the code which represents the integration of several classes of the application. Multi and Many-Objective metaheuristics (Evolutionary Algorithms) were considered to generate integration test cases and were assessed via three quality indicators. Results show that the traditional Indicator-Based Evolutionary Algorithm (IBEA) turned out to be the best out of four algorithms evaluated, including newer Many-Objective strategies such as Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-III (NSGA-III).</p>

The many faces of early life adversity - Content overlap in validated assessment instruments as well as in fear and reward learning research
<p>The precise assessment of childhood adversity is crucial for understanding the impact of aversive events on mental and physical development. However, the plethora of assessment tools currently used in the literature with unknown overlap in childhood adversity types covered hamper comparability and cumulative knowledge generation. In this study, we conducted two separate item-level content analyses of in total 35 questionnaires aiming to assess childhood adversity. These include 13 questionnaires that were recently recommended based on strong psychometric properties as well as additional 25 questionnaires that were identified through a systematic literature search. The latter provides important insights into the actual use of childhood adversity questionnaires in a specific, exemplary research field (i.e., the association between childhood adversity and threat and reward learning). Of note, only 3 of the recommended questionnaires were employed in this research field. Both item-wise content analysis illustrate substantial heterogeneity in the adversity types assessed across these questionnaires and hence highlight limited overlap in content (i.e., adversity types) covered by different questionnaires. Furthermore, we observed considerable differences in structural properties across all included questionnaires such as the number of items, age ranges assessed as well as the specific response formats (e.g., binary vs. continuous assessments, self vs. caregiver). We discuss implications for the interpretation, comparability and integration of the results from the existing literature and derive specific recommendations for future research. In sum, the substantial heterogeneity in the assessment and operationalization of childhood adversity emphasizes the urgent need for theoretical and methodological solutions to promote comparability, replicability of childhood adversity assessment and foster cumulative knowledge generation in research on the association of childhood adversity and physical as well as psychological health.</p>

Too many to count: Using orthophotography to census an unharvested beaver (Castor canadensis) population in Ontario
<p>Various field methods exist to monitor wildlife populations and estimate trends in their distribution and abundance. For American beaver (Castor canadensis), aerial surveys provide a means to obtain abundance data over large areas and typically involve observers searching watercourses and shorelines for active beaver presence. Here, we describe a systematic aerial photo census we designed and executed in autumn to quantify annual beaver abundance on the 184 km2 Michipicoten Island, Ontario from 2015–2019. Aerial photos were stitched together into orthophoto mosaics after each census and visually searched for beaver food caches, with each food cache representing an independent beaver colony. Our methods revealed that beaver colony abundance declined substantially from a peak of 6.1 colonies/km2 in 2015, the highest reported across North America, to 0.4 colonies/km2 in 2018. Beaver abundance remained low through 2019. Though photographing the entire isolated study area required relatively little time and effort, even when beaver density was very high, post-census processing work was time-consuming. Lessons learned will improve the efficiencies of our future censuses and aid other researchers. Our method is advantageous over traditional aerial wildlife surveys in that it provides a digital and visual record that can be used for additional analyses. </p>

Data from: When can model-based estimates replace surveys of wildlife populations that span many discrete management units?
<p>Monitoring widely distributed species on a budget presents challenges for the spatio-temporal allocation of survey effort. When there are multiple discrete units to monitor, survey alternatives such as model-based estimates can be useful to fill information-gaps but may not reliably reflect biological complexity and change. The spatio-temporal allocation of survey effort that minimizes uncertainty for the greatest number of units within a budget can help to ensure monitoring efforts are optimized.</p> <p>We used aerial survey-based population estimates of moose (Alces alces) across 30 Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) in Ontario, Canada to parameterize simulated populations and test the performance of different monitoring scenarios in capturing WMU-specific annual variation and trends. Firstly, we tested scenarios that prioritized conducting a survey for a unit based on one of three management criteria: population state, population uncertainty, or number of years between surveys. Also incorporated in the decision framework were WMU-specific costs and annual budget constraints. Secondly, we tested how using model-based estimates to fill information-gaps improved population and trend estimates. Lastly, we assessed how the utility (based on minimizing population uncertainty) of using a model-based estimate rather than conducting a survey was impacted by population density, severity of environmental stressors, and years since the last survey.</p> <p>Interval-based monitoring that minimized the number of years between surveys captured accurate trends for the highest number of WMUs, but annual variation was poorly captured regardless of management criteria prioritized. Using model-based estimates to fill information gaps improved trend estimation. Further, the utility of conducting a survey increased with time since the last survey and was greater for populations with low densities when the severity of environmental stressors was high, while being greater for populations with high densities when environmental severity was low.</p> <p>Overall, the utility of aerial survey monitoring was strongly associated with WMU-specific monitoring precision and the predictive power of model-based estimates. If long-term trends are evident then there is greater value in using alternatives such as model-based predictions to replace surveys, but model-based estimates may be a poor substitute when there is strong annual variation and when using a simple model.</p>

Data underpinning "Local integrals of motion and the stability of many-body localisation in disorder-free systems"
<p>Many-body localisation in disordered systems in one spatial dimension is typically understood in terms of the existence of an extensive number of (quasi)-local integrals of motion (LIOMs) which are thought to decay exponentially with distance and interact only weakly with one another. By contrast, little is known about the form of the integrals of motion in disorder-free systems which exhibit localisation. Here, we explicitly compute the LIOMs for disorder-free localised systems, focusing on the case of a linearly increasing potential. We show that while in the absence of interactions, the LIOMs decay faster than exponentially, the addition of interactions leads to the formation of a spatially extended plateau. We study how varying the linear slope affects the localisation properties of the LIOMs, finding that there is a significant finite-size dependence, and present evidence that adding a weak harmonic potential does not result in typical many-body localisation phenomenology. By contrast, the addition of disorder has a qualitatively different effect, dramatically modifying the properties of the LIOMs. Based on this, we speculate that disorder-free localisation is unlikely to be stable at long times and for large systems.</p>
Water, acetonitrile, and methanol MD simulations driven by many-body ML potentials
<p>Input, output, and trajectories of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of water, acetonitrile, and methanol. Simulations were driven by many-body machine learning (mbML) potentials including explicit 1-, 2-, and 3-body contributions. <a href="https://keithgroup.github.io/mbGDML/">GDML</a>, <a href="https://libatoms.github.io/GAP/">GAP</a>, and <a href="https://schnetpack.readthedocs.io/en/stable/">SchNet</a> models are provided in a <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7112163">separate repository</a>. All simulations were performed in the <a href="https://wiki.fysik.dtu.dk/ase/">atomic simulation environment (ASE)</a>. Analyses including radial distribution function (rdf) curves are provided <a href="https://github.com/keithgroup/mbgdml-h2o-meoh-mecn">here</a>.</p> <p><strong>Manifest</strong></p> <p>The following simulations are included in this repository for each solvent.</p> <ul> <li>1 ps hexamer NVE MD simulation driven by MP2/def2-TZVP (in ORCA v4.2.0), mbGDML, mbGAP, mbSchNet, and GFN2-xTB started with the same positions and velocities. Velocities were initialized at 298.15 K with a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution.</li> <li>Periodic NVT MD simulation at 298.15 K for 10 or 30 ps with a 1 fs time step driven by mbGDML. These simulations contained <ul> <li>58 or <strong>137</strong> water molecules,</li> <li><strong>67</strong> or 122 acetonitrile molecules,</li> <li><strong>61</strong> methanol molecules.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <p>Systems that are not bolded were used for testing purposes.</p>
