Spike sorting was either manual (Guo et al., 2014b) or using Kilosort2 (https://www.github.com/MouseLand/Kilosort2) (Pachitariu et al., 2016) followed by manually curated with the Phy 2.0 beta 1 GUI (https://github.com/cortex-lab/phy) (Rossant et al., 2016) and manual inspection (Guo et al., 2014a). Spike widths were computed as the trough-to-peak interval in the mean spike waveform. Units with spike width < 0.35 ms were defined as fast-spiking (FS) neurons and units with spike widths > 0.45 ms as putative pyramidal neurons. Units with intermediate values (0.35 - 0.45 ms) were excluded. We concentrated our analyses on the putative pyramidal neurons.

Data from: Functional modularity and mechanical stress shape plastic responses during fish development

The adaptive potential of plastic phenotypes relies on combined developmental responses. Here, we investigated how manipulation of developmental conditions related to foraging mode in Megaleporinus macrocephalus fish induces plastic responses at different levels: 1) functional modularity of skull bones, 2) biomechanical properties of the chondrocranium using Finite Element Models, 3) bmp4 expression levels, used as a proxy for molecular pathways involved in bone responses to mechanical load. We identified new modules in the experimental groups, suggesting increased integration in head bone elements associated with the development of subterminal and upturned mouths, which are major features of Megaleporinus plastic morphotypes released in the lab. Plastic responses in head shape involved differences in the magnitude of mechanical stress, which seem restricted to certain chondrocranium regions. Three bones represent a 'mechanical unit' related to changes in mouth position induced by foraging mode, suggesting that functional modularity might be enhanced by specific regions responding to load. Differences in bmp4 expression levels between plastic morphotypes indicate associations between molecular signaling pathways and biomechanical responses to load. Our results offer a multilevel perspective of epigenetic factors involved in plastic responses, expanding our knowledge about mechanisms of developmental plasticity that originate novel complex phenotypes.

Patterns of morphological variation highlight the effect of natural selection on eyespots modularity in the butterfly Morpho telemachus - Dataset

Morphological correlations can stem from developmental constraints but also from selective pressures. Butterfly eyespots are repeated wing color pattern elements, widespread across species. As developmental serial homologues, they are controlled by similar developmental pathways imposing correlations among eyespots: selection on a single eyespot may induce correlated responses in all eyespots. We study the variations in the ventral eyespots of Morpho telemachus, where two different selective regimes are likely to act: while most eyespots are always-visible, two eyespots are conditionally-displayed: hidden at rest, they can be exposed when the butterflies are threatened, or during sexual interactions. We investigate how such contrasted selection across eyespots can alter the covariations imposed by their shared developmental origin. We quantified eyespots' co-variations within a large population of M. telemachus and compared the observed patterns to those found in M. helenor, where all eyespots are always-visible and thus probably affected by a similar selection regime. We found that M. telemachus conditionally-displayed eyespots are less variable than always-visible eyespots and that these two eyespots form a separate variational module in this species, in contrast to M. helenor. Our results suggest that eyespots' covariations were shaped by selection, highlighting how natural selection may promote the evolution of modularity.

Sewer mining modular unit at the Athens Urban Tree Nursery

The Athens Urban Tree Nursery is part of the Goudi Park, an area in the process of redevelopment and regeneration to become the key metropolitan park of the capital. The area, which lies in the heart of Athens, is a mixed-use area, comprising of urban green and urban agriculture spaces as well as administration and residential uses. The regeneration is an effort to boost both the local economy and improve quality of life for the 4.000.000 citizens of the Attica Region.

The nursery comprises 4 ha of vegetation, supplys all urban parks and green spaces of Athens with plant material and uses potable water from Athens’s Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP) for its irrigation. The city is seeking alternative water sources leveraging circular economy solutions to achieve environmental, social and financial benefits for the city.

The installation of a sewer mining modular unit for urban green irrigation at the point of demand would be of direct benefit for the sustainability of the new metropolitan park. Additionally, compost-based eco-engineered growing media products will be reused as an onsite fertilizer, as part of a portfolio of autonomous, decentralized water, energy and materials circular solutions for cities in water scarce area. Finally, thermal energy recovery schemes will be investigated to minimize the pilot’s environmental footprint.

Dataset: On the Stability of a Modular 1000 kV HVDC divider design

In order to calibrate high voltage dividers in testing laboratories and HVDC converter substations, a new measurement infrastructure for on-site calibration up to 1000 kV was established in 2013. A 1000 kV wide-band modular HVDC divider was built divided into stackable 200 kV HV modules for agile on-site assessment, with protection against damage from transients, and for measuring of ripple voltage. Nine 200 kV modules were built by the five NMIs and stacked to one 1000 kV divider and one 800 kV voltage divider. The scale factors of the two dividers were determined in a comparison campaign in June 2013, resulting in a combined expanded uncertainty better than 20 μV/V at 1000 kV, and better than 15 μV/V for 200 kV. Traceability of five modular systems have since been
maintained using three methods; where the first method is calibration of the HV resistance of each module and LV arm, calculating the scale factors. The second method uses the Hamon transfer method, applied by RISE with five 200 kV modules. The third method is by comparison of the scale factor which includes the LV arm against a lower voltage reference divider. This paper presents the stability and robustness of all divider systems from June 2013 to spring 2022. The long-term stability is presented for the resistance of both the high voltage and the low voltage arm as well as the scale factor. The result shows an unprecedented stability of a HV divider system.

Dataset:A Modular Universal Divider for Calibration of UHVDC, and Composite Waves up to 1400 KV

With the development of new high voltage cables and switching elements for continuously higher system voltages, especially for HVDC operation, the need for new reference measuring systems for on-site calibration to support activities in type and routine testing. Traceability in testing the fundamental voltage stress, high voltage DC or AC, is superimposed with a Switching or Lightning Impulses has up to now been lacking. This paper describes the design of a new universal RCR divider developed at RISE for a reference measurement system for traceability of ultra-high voltage (UHV) composite and combined waves.

In composite/combined wave measurements the RCR divider is rated 500, 330, 600 and 700 kV for DC, ACrms, Switching Impulse (SI) and Lightning Impulse (LI) respectively. For UHVDC measurements the extended measurement uncertainty is better than 40 μV/V. In a composite/combined wave measurement, the extended measurement uncertainties for the divider are better than 150 and 400 μV/V for DC and AC and 0.5% for peak voltage of SI and LI. Two voltage dividers have been built for the purpose to measure both composite and combined waves. This divider is modular, where the HV arms can be stacked to 1000, 660, 1200 and 1400 kV and beyond.
