Vegetation Surveys in Chihuahuan Desert Grassland and Shrubland Sites Associated with Coyote Scat Surveys at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2008-2009)

This data set contains information regarding vegetation structure at sites in grama grassland and both creosote and mesquite shrubland habitats at the Sevilleta NWR. This information was collected at randomly selected sites throughout the refuge. Each site is within 100 meters of one of the 22 road-based transects(20 in 2008) that were used to carry out coyote scat surveys during three seasons (spring, summer and fall) in 2009 (see "Coyote scat surveys in grassland and shrubland sites at the Sevilleta NWR, spring, summer and fall 2009" data set). Data was collected within at total of 22 circular vegetation plots (40 in 2008), each of which is 30m in diameter. Each plot was surveyed a total of three times, specifically in: April (spring), July (summer), and October (fall) 2009. Variables were selected based on their relevance to patterns of coyote habitat use, as well as their utility in calibrating Landsat images of the study site and the likelihood that they would vary seasonally. Measured variables include: average percent live woody vegetation cover, average percent live grass cover, average percent live forb cover, and average woody plant height. Information on woody plant species with individuals greater than 0.5 m in height is also presented.

Coyote Scat Survey in the Chihuahuan Desert Grasslands and Creosote Shrublands at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2004)

This study measured the population dynamics of coyotes in the grasslands and creosote shrublands of McKenzie Flats, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. The study was begun in January, 1992, and continued quarterly each year. Â Coyotes were sampled via scat counts along the roads of McKenzie Flats during winter, spring, summer, and fall of each year. The entire road transect was 21.5 miles in length. Scat counts over a week period (number of scats/mile/day) in each season along the roads were used to calculate the densities of coyotes (number of coyotes per square kilometer). Results from 1992 to 2002 indicated that autumn was the peak density period of the year, with generally steady declines through the year until the following autumn. Coyote populations appeared to fluctuate seasonally, but remained relatively stable at 0.27 +/- 0.03 (SE) coyotes per km2 during summer periods (this likely represents the "breeding pair" density, during which coyote pairs have set up territories and are raising young, but the pups have not as yet joined the parents in foraging activities).

Topographic survey in the forest-marsh interface of Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge

We collected RTK GPS points in the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge near the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula. Survey points have the UTM 18N Easting and Northing coordinates, the NAVD88 elevation in meters, an identifier for the site ("hollow" or "hillslope") and a point code ("ALIVE" for mature live trees, "DEAD" for dead trees, and "SAPLING" for young trees).

Risk factors for non-communicable diseases in Bangladesh: Findings of the population-based cross-sectional national survey 2018

<p><span><strong><span>Objectives:</span></strong> To determine the national prevalence of risk factors of non-communicable diseases (NCD) in the adult population of Bangladesh. </span></p> <p><span><strong><span>Design: The study was a </span></strong>population-based national cross-sectional study.</span></p> <p><span><strong><span>Setting:</span></strong> This study used 496 primary sampling units (PSUs) developed by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. The PSUs were equally allocated to each division and urban and rural stratum within each division.</span></p> <p><span><strong><span>Participants:</span></strong> The participants were adults aged 18-69 years, who were usual residents of the households for at least six months, and stayed the night before the survey. Out of 9900 participants, 8185 (82.7%) completed STEP-1 and STEP-2, and 7208 took part in STEP-3. </span></p> <p><span><b>Primary and secondary outcome:</b> The prevalence of behavioral, physical, and biochemical risk factors of NCD. Data were weighted to generate national estimates.</span></p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Tobacco use was significantly (p&lt;0.05) higher in the rural (45.2%) than the urban (38.8%) population. Inadequate fruit/vegetable intake was significantly (P&lt;0.05) higher in the urban (92.1%) than in the rural (88.9%) population. The mean salt intake per day was higher in the rural (9.0 gm) than urban (8.9 gm) population. Among all, 3.0% had no, 70.9% had 1-2, and 26.2% had ≥3 NCD risk factors. The urban population was more likely to have insufficient physical activity (AOR: 1.2, 95% CI: 1.2–1.2), obesity (AOR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.5–1.5), hypertension (AOR: 1.3, 95% CI: 1.3–1.3), diabetes (AOR: 1.6, 95% CI: 1.6–1.6), and hyperglycemia (AOR: 1.1, 95% CI: 1.1–1.1).</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Considering the high prevalence of the behavioral, physical, and biochemical risk factors, diverse population and high-risk group targeted interventions are essential to combat the rising burden of NCDs. </p>

Policy and programmatic directions for the Lesotho tuberculosis programme: Findings of the national tuberculosis prevalence survey, 2019

<p><strong>Introduction</strong></p> <p>The Kingdom of Lesotho has one of the highest burdens of tuberculosis (TB) in the world. A national TB prevalence survey was conducted to estimate the prevalence of bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB disease among those ≥15 years of age in 2019.</p> <p><strong>Method</strong></p> <p>A multistage cluster-based cross-sectional survey where residents ≥15 years in 54 clusters sampled from across the country were eligible to participate. Survey participants were screened using a symptom screen questionnaire and digital chest X-ray (CXR). Respondents who acknowledged cough of any duration, fever, weight loss, night sweats and/or had any CXR abnormality in the lungs were asked to provide two spot sputum specimens. All sputum testing was conducted at the National TB Reference Laboratory (NTRL), where samples underwent Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (1st sample) and MGIT culture (2nd sample). HIV counselling and testing was offered to all survey participants. TB cases were those with Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex-positive samples with culture; and where culture was not positive, Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Xpert Ultra) was positive with a CXR suggestive of active TB and no current or prior history of TB.</p> <p><strong>Result</strong></p> <p>A total of 39,902 individuals were enumerated, and of these, 26,857 (67.3%) were eligible to participate; 21,719 (80.9%) participated in the survey of which 8,599 (40%) were males and 13,120 (60%) were females. All 21,719 (100%) survey participants underwent symptom screening and a total of 21,344 participants (98.3%) had a CXR. Of the 7,584 (34.9%) participants who were eligible for sputum examination, 4,190 (55.2%) were eligible by CXR only, 1,455 (19.2%) by symptom screening, 1,630 by both, and 309 by CXR exemption. A total of 6,780 (89.4%) submitted two sputum specimens, and 311 (4.1%) submitted one sample only. From the 21,719 survey participants, HIV counseling and testing was offered to 17,048, and 3,915 (23.0%) were documented as HIV-positive. The survey identified 132 participants with bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB thus providing an estimated prevalence of 581 per 100,000 population (95% CI 466–696) for those ≥15 years in 2019. Using the survey results, TB incidence was re-estimated to be 654 per 100,000 (95% CI 406–959), which was comparable to the 2018 TB incidence rate of 611 per 100,000 (95% CI 395–872) reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The highest TB burden was found in those ≥55 years and among men. The ratio of prevalence to case notification was estimated at 1.22. TB/HIV coinfection was identified in 39 (29.6%) participants. Out of the 1,825 participants who reported a cough, 50% of these participants, mostly men, did not seek care. Those who sought care predominantly went to the public health facilities.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p> <p>The TB prevalence survey results confirmed that burden of TB and TB/HIV coinfection remains very high in Lesotho. Given that TB prevalence remains high, and there is a significant proportion of participants with confirmed TB that did not report TB suggestive symptoms. The National TB Programme will need to update its TB screening and treatment algorithms to achieve the End TB targets. A major focus will need to be placed on finding the "missing cases" i.e., undiagnosed or under-reported TB cases, or ensuring that not only TB symptomatic but also those who do not present with typical TB symptoms are promptly identified to reduce further onward transmission.</p>
