Reduction of blob-filament radial propagation by parallel variation of flows: analysis of a gyrokinetic simulation
<p>The accompanying files contain digital data for figures in the article "Reduction of blob-filament radial propagation by parallel variation of flows: analysis of a gyrokinetic simulation" by J. R. Chang, submitted to the journal Physics of Plasmas.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>Data from the XGC1 gyrokinetic simulation is analyzed to understand the three-dimensional spatial structure and the radial propagation of blob-filaments generated by quasi-steady turbulence in the tokamak edge pedestal and scrape-off layer plasma. Spontaneous toroidal flows vary in the poloidal direction and shear the filaments within a flux surface resulting in a structure that varies in the parallel direction. This parallel structure allows the curvature and grad-B induced polarization charge density to be shorted out via parallel electron motion. As a result, it is found that the blob-filament radial velocity is significantly reduced from estimates which neglect parallel electron kinetics, broadly consistent with experimental observations. Conditions for when this charge shorting effect tends to dominate blob dynamics are derived and compared with the simulation.</p>
Data from: The propagation of admixture-derived adaptive radiation potential
<p>Adaptive radiations frequently show remarkable repeatability where single lineages undergo multiple independent episodes of adaptive radiation in distant places and long separate timepoints. Increasing evidence suggests that genetic variation generated through hybridization between distantly related lineages can promote adaptive radiation. This mechanism, however, requires rare coincidence in space and time between the hybridization event and opening of ecological opportunity, because hybridization generates large genetic variation only in the site where it occurred and the elevated genetic variation will persist only for a short period. Hence, hybridization seems unlikely to explain recurrent adaptive radiation in the same lineage. Contrary to these expectations, our evolutionary computer simulations demonstrate that admixture variation can geographically spread and persist for long periods if certain conditions are present such that ecological and/or geographic mechanisms split the hybrid population into isolated sub-lineages. Subsequent secondary hybridization of some of these can reestablish genetic polymorphisms from the ancestral hybridization in places far from the birthplace of the hybrid-clade and long after the ancestral hybridization event. Consequently, simulations revealed conditions where exceptional genetic variation, once generated through a rare and unlikely hybridization event, can facilitate multiple adaptive radiations exploiting ecological opportunities available at distant points in time and space.</p>
Data from: Cyanophage propagation in the freshwater cyanobacterium Phormidium is constrained by phosphorus limitation and enhanced by elevated pCO2
<p>Intensification of human activities has led to changes in the availabilities of CO<sub>2</sub> and nutrients in freshwater ecosystems, which may greatly alter the physiological status of phytoplankton. Viruses require hosts for their reproduction and shifts in phytoplankton host physiology through global environmental change may thus affect viral infections as well. Various studies have investigated the impacts of single environmental factors on phytoplankton virus propagation, yet little is known about the impacts of multiple factors, particularly in freshwater systems. We therefore tested the combined effects of phosphorus limitation and elevated pCO<sub>2</sub> on the propagation of a cyanophage infecting a freshwater cyanobacterium. To this end, we cultured Phormidium in P-limited chemostats under ambient (400 µatm) and elevated (800 µatm) pCO<sub>2</sub> at growth rates of 0.6, 0.3, and 0.05 d<sup>-1</sup>. Host C:P ratios generally increased with strengthened P-limitation and with elevated pCO<sub>2</sub>. Upon host steady state conditions, virus growth characteristics were obtained in separate infection assays where hosts were infected by the double-stranded DNA cyanophage PP. Severe P-limitation (host growth 0.05 d<sup>-1</sup>) led to a 85% decrease in cyanophage production rate and a 73% decrease in burst size compared to the 0.6 d<sup>-1</sup> grown P-limited cultures. Elevated pCO<sub>2</sub> induced a 96% increase in cyanophage production rate and a 57% increase in burst size, as well as an 85% shorter latent period as compared to ambient pCO<sub>2</sub> at the different host growth rates. In addition, elevated pCO<sub>2</sub> caused a decrease in the plaquing efficiency and an increase in the abortion percentage for the 0.05 d<sup>-1</sup> P-limited treatment, while the plaquing efficiency increased for the 0.6 d<sup>-1</sup> P-limited cultures. Together, our results demonstrate interactive effects of elevated pCO<sub>2</sub> and P-limitation on cyanophage propagation, and show that viral propagation is generally constrained by P-limitation but enhanced with elevated pCO<sub>2</sub>. Our findings indicate that global change will likely have a severe impact on virus growth characteristics and thereby on the control of cyanobacterial hosts in freshwater ecosystems.</p>
Measurements of the solar wind propagation delay for L1 to Earth based on ACE and ground-based magnetometer data

STL Fast Decompression Experiment Data for "Standing Shock Prevents Propagation of Sparks in Supersonic Explosive Flows"
<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>This data is camera images and pressure gauge and RF antenna voltage traces from rapid decompression shots at the STL shock tube facility. </p> <p>This data is used in figures 1, 2, 3, and 4 and corresponds to the STL shots listed in table S1 of the paper "Standing Shock Prevents Propagation of Sparks in Supersonic Explosive Flows".</p> <p>Electric sparks and explosive flows have long been associated with each other. Flowing dust particles originate charge through contact and separate based on inertia, resulting in strong electric fields supporting sparks. These sparks can cause explosions in dusty environments, especially those rich in carbon, such as coal mines and grain elevators. Recent observations of explosive events in nature and decompression experiments indicate that supersonic flows of explosions may alter the electrical discharge process. Shocks may suppress parts of the hierarchy of the discharge phenomena, such as leaders. In our decompression experiments, a shock tube ejects a flow of gas and particles into an expansion chamber. We imaged an illuminated plume from the decompression of a mixture of argon and <100 mg of diamond particles and observe sparks occurring below the sharp boundary of a condensation cloud. We also performed hydrodynamics simulations of the decompression event that provide insight into the conditions supporting the observed behavior. Simulation results agree closely with the experimentally observed Mach disk shock shape and height. This represents direct evidence that the sparks are sculpted by the outflow. The spatial and temporal scale of the sparks transmit an impression of the shock tube flow, a connection that could enable novel instrumentation to diagnose currently inaccessible supersonic granular phenomena.</p> <p><strong>Accessing Data</strong></p> <p>The prefixes of the filenames correspond to the shot dates and approximate times listed in table S1 of the paper. </p> <p>The "_SA4.zip" and "_SA3.zip" files contains tiff images of the SA4 and SA3 camera frames, respectively. The ".cih" file in each zip lists camera settings in plain text.</p> <p>The "OscilloscopeData.zip" contains files with prefixes corresponding to the shot dates and times listed in table and the diagnostic name. Files ending in ".csv" contain raw data and ".pdf" contain plots of the respective data. For pressure data, 1 V = 100 psi.</p>

Data from: Comparative modelling of crack propagation in elastic-plastic materials using meshfree LRPIM and XFEM
<p>The modelling of crack propagation for elastic-plastic materials is critical in various engineering applications, such as safety analysis of concrete structures and stability analysis of rock slopes. Combined with elastic-plastic theory and fracture mechanics, the local radial basis point Interpolation method (LRPIM)has the ability to analyse crack propagation in elastic-plastic materials. Crack propagation in elastic-plastic materials is compared using the LRPIM and Extended Finite Element method (XFEM). The comparative investigation indicates that: (1) The LRPIM results are close to the model test results, which indicates that it is feasible for analysing crack growth of elastic-plastic materials. (2) Compared with the LRPIM, the XFEM results are closer to the experimental results, showing that the XFEM has higher accuracy and computational efficiency. (3) Compared with the XFEM, when the LRPIM method is used to analyse crack propagation, the propagation path is not smooth enough, which can be explained that the crack tip stress and strain not being accurate enough.</p>
Data from: Can interbreeding of wild and artificially propagated animals be prevented by using broodstock selected for a divergent life history?
Two strategies have been proposed to avoid negative genetic effects of artificially propagated individuals on wild populations: (i) integration of wild and captive populations to minimize domestication selection, and (ii) segregation of released individuals from the wild population to minimize interbreeding. We tested the efficacy of the strategy of segregation by divergent life history in a steelhead trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss system, where hatchery fish were selected to spawn months earlier than the indigenous wild population. Up to 80% of the naturally produced steelhead in any given year were hatchery-wild hybrids. The proportion of wild ancestry smolts and adults declined by 10 to 20% over the three generations since the beginning of the program, due to an increase in hybrids. Regression model selection analysis suggested that proportions of hybrid smolts and adults were positively correlated with the number of naturally spawning hatchery-produced adults. Furthermore, the proportion of smolt hybrids was higher in years with high stream discharge allowing hatchery fish to bypass the weir protecting wild spawning habitat. Divergent life history failed to prevent interbreeding when physical isolation was compromised following changes in environmental conditions, an inadequacy of the segregation strategy that is likely to prevail in many other situations.
Data from: Phenotypic and community consequences of captive propagation in mosquitofish
1. Captive propagation can lead to phenotypic change in fish populations, but the broader community-level consequences of captive phenotypes remain largely unknown. 2. Here we investigate the degree to which captive propagation alters the phenotypes and ecological roles of fish stocked into wild communities. We focus on captive propagation of western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) for biocontrol, which represents one of the largest-scale production efforts for any fish released into the wild. 3. Captive propagation in mosquitofish consistently generated novel mixtures of morphological and behavioral traits that deviate from those of wild populations. 4. A mesocosm experiment showed that mosquitofish from captive propagation facilities differ from wild fish in their effects on aquatic community structure by shifting their consumption to less-mobile, benthic prey. 5. Synthesis and applications: These findings provide evidence that captive-propagated and translocated wild stocks not only differ in phenotype, but can have substantially different ecological effects on the communities into which they are introduced. Therefore, captive propagation programs involving continual release should expand their concerns beyond altered phenotypes and fitness to include whether propagated fish actually provide the intended ecological roles and services associated with wild counterparts. Infusions of wild alleles and captive environments that mimic wild conditions are recommended strategies to retain the desired ecological role of captive propagated fish
