Spring and Fall plant cover across grassland-shrubland ecotones at 3 sites in the Jornada Basin, 2005-ongoing

The objective of this ongoing study is to investigate how pulses of precipitation translate into pulses of plant aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) across grassland to shrubland ecotones in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. This dataset consists of ocular plant cover and height measurements to be used for estimating aboveground net primary in three habitat vegetation zones (grassland, ecotone, and shrubland) at three grassland-to-shrubland ecotone sites in the Jornada Basin, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. Sampling is conducted twice a year: in the spring before the growing season and in the fall after the growing season.

Annual Aboveground Net Primary Productivity by plant functional groups across grassland-shrubland ecotones at 3 sites in the Jornada Basin, 2006-ongoing

The objective of this ongoing study is to investigate how pulses of precipitation translate into pulses of plant aboveground net primary productivity (NPP) across grassland to shrubland ecotones in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. This dataset consists of annual aboveground net primary productivity estimates by plant functional groups in three habitat vegetation zones (grassland, ecotone, and shrubland) at three grassland-to-shrubland ecotone sites in the Jornada Basin, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. The annual ANPP estimates are derived from plant cover measurements (see methods). Due to its growth form, Yucca elata (YUEL), in the leaf succulent functional group, has been found to produce large errors in interyear biomass estimates. This data package separates biomass estimates for YUEL and non-YUEL leaf succulents so that users can decide whether to combine them or keep them separate. In general, the authors recommend against using the YUEL estimates for most purposes. Data collection is ongoing with new observations in spring and fall of each year; data from both annual sampling times are required to estimate annual ANPP.

Soil water content measurements and rainfall data for plots with experimentally altered precipitation and nutrient inputs at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2011-ongoing

This dataset contains soil volumetric water content data collected starting in 2011 for a long-term precipitation and nutrient manipulation experiment at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. This experiment uses precipitation shelters and irrigation treatments to manipulate water inputs, and fertilization treatments to alter nitrogen input to 2.5 x 2.5 meter plots in a desert grassland. Soil sensors are installed at surface and deep soil layers in each plot and collect hourly averages of volumetric water content using a time-domain reflectometry method. This dataset contains daily averages. This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated yearly.

Litterfall data from creosote sites along the Jornada Basin LTER transect, 1985-1988

This dataset contains measurements of litterfall from creosote shrub communities along the Jornada Basin LTER (LTER-I) transects in southern New Mexico, USA. These transects are located in a livestock exclosure established in 1982 in the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) and run from the middle of the College Playa up to the foot of Mt. Summerford (2.7 km in length). Prior to the exclosure, the study site was moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. The treatment transect was treated annually with ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NH4NO3 at 10g N/m2/yr) until 1987. Creosotebush litterfall was collected monthly from traps under ten shrubs in the creosote zones along the control and treatment transects. Oven-dry weights of leaves, stems, and seed fractions as well as total dry weight of monthly collections are recorded. This study is complete.

Aggregated 30-minute soil water and temperature data from 9 NPP shrub sites at Jornada Basin LTER, 2013 - 2024 (for Pinos et al 2025 manuscript)

This is an aggregated dataset of 30-minute soil temperature and moisture data from 9 shrub-dominated NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Collection of soil volumetric water content data at all of the 15 Jornada LTER NPP sites, New Mexico, supports the environmental monitoring objectives of the Jornada LTER monitoring program that look at plant-soil water dynamics. Volumetric water content and soil temperature are measured every 30 minutes at an automated meteorological station installed at all 15 of the Jornada LTER program’s NPP sites. This dataset aggregates only the stations located at the 9 sites with shrub-dominated vegetation cover (creosotebush, tarbush, and mesquite dune sites). Measurements are made every 30 minutes at 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm soil depths. This dataset is in support of the Pinos et al. 2025 manuscript.

This is an aggregated dataset of 30-minute summary meteorology data from 9 shrub-dominated NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Average air temperature, relative humidity, total precipitation, wind speed, wind direction, and solar radiation are measured and calculated based on 1-second scan rate of all sensors located at an automated meteorological station installed at all 15 of the Jornada LTER program’s NPP sites. This dataset aggregates only the stations located at the 9 sites with shrub-dominated vegetation cover (creosote, tarbush, and mesquite sites). Wind speed is measured at 75 cm, 150 cm, and 300 cm, wind direction at approximately 3m, and air temperature and relative humidity at approximate 2.5m. Solar radiation is measured at 3m. This dataset is in support of the Pinos et al. 2025 manuscript.

Hierarchical herbivore exclosure vegetation canopy cover at 3 sites across grassland-shrubland ecotones, 2022

The goal of this dataset is to examine long-term effects of multiple herbivore groups on canopy cover of plants across a shrub encroachment gradient (i.e., Ecotone Study) using herbivore exclusion treatments. Plots (2x2-m) were controls (open to all herbivores), large herbivore exclusion (lagomorph, rodent access), or full exclusion (no herbivore access). Plots were established in 2001 across grassland-shrubland ecotones in patches of black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda with >75% cover). Biomass of B. eriopoda was physically removed from the center 40x40-cm2 patch of each treatment to simulate disturbance. We sampled the controls and herbivore exclosure plots in summer 2022 to evaluate the long-term influence of herbivore exclusion on B. eriopoda recovery and overall canopy cover.

Grass seedling survival and microhabitat vegetation cover among herbivore exclusion treatments across grassland-shrubland ecotones at 3 sites, 2022 and 2023

The aim of this study is to reveal how mammalian herbivores differentially affect the survival of grass seedlings depending on herbivore taxa (cattle, oryx, lagomorphs, rodents) and microhabitat vegetation structure surrounding grass seedlings. This dataset includes data tracking the survival of grass seedlings among herbivore exclusion treatments across grassland, ecotone, and shrubland habitats. Seedling survival trials were established at 3 spatial blocks associated with the Ecotone Study: JER Pastures 9 and 12, and CDRRC Pasture 3. Survival trials were conducted on Pasture 12 in 2022, and on Pastures 3, 9, and 12 in 2023. Each spatial block contained 3 sites (grassland, ecotone, shrubland) that were further subdivided into 5 replicate plots (n = 45 plots). Two trays (1 control open to all herbivores, 1 caged allowing only rodent access) of 25 seedlings each were buried at ground level at each plot and their condition (i.e., alive & undamaged, alive & herbivore damaged, senesced or absent via herbivory, senesced due to environmental stress, resprouted following herbivory, unknown fate, or herbivory following senescence) recorded every 3 days for a total of 15 days. Microhabitat vegetation cover surrounding the seedling trays was collected using ocular estimates of cover across plant functional types (e.g., perennial grasses, forbs, sub-shrubs, shrubs, etc.) within 1 square-meter PVC quadrats placed on both the east and west face of seedling trays established in the field. Maximum height of vegetative (non-reproductive) plant tissue of each functional type was additionally recorded to gauge the level of grass seedling concealment.

Seasonal Soil Sampling of Grass-dominated, Mesquite-dominated, and Ecotone Sites at the Jornada Basin LTER site for the Analysis of Microbial Community Variance, 2022-2023

Fungal and bacterial soil communities were analyzed to assess the influence of woody shrub encroachment on soil microbial communities. Three study sites in the Jornada Long Term Ecological Research Site were selected to represent a grass-dominated site, a woody shrub dominated site, and an ecotone of woody shrubs and grass. The field sampling began in October 2022 and concluded in July 2023 with five sampling periods that aimed to capture seasonal variation: October 2022, January 2023, March 2023, May 2023, and July 2023. This dataset includes data pertaining to the soil microbial composition, environmental characteristics, microbial sequence processing, and documentation of the code utilized for data processing and statistical analyses. Data on soil microbial composition was collected from Phospholipid Fatty-Acid composition data from soil samples. Data on environmental characteristics were collected from on-site temperature probes, laboratory assessments of soil properties, and Jornada meteorological stations. Information pertaining to microbial sequence processing is included in the documented code as well as in the record of the primers utilized.

APT01 Daily precipitation amounts measured at multiple sites across konza prairie

Data set contains daily records of precipitation on 10 raingauges at 10 sites on Konza Prairie. Two sites (020A and 002C; SE) have 7-day clocks (one revolution per week), 7 have 24-hour clocks (one revolution per day), and the Headquarters raingauge generates daily data and 15 minute data. The Headquarters raingauge generates data year round. The remaining rain gauges are operated from April 1 to October 31. Precipitation amounts are recorded in mm. As of 2011, the HQ 1 (7-day clock) and HQ 2 (24-hour clock) raingauges have been discontinued and replaced with an Ott Pluvio2 rainguage that began data generation March 2010. APT011 - Precipitation on Konza Prairie collected at the Headquarter (HQ); APT012 - Precipitation on Konza Prairie collected at 10 rainfall gauges; APT013 - Precipitation on Konza Prairie collected at 8 rainfall gauges (HOBO Data Logging Rain Gauges).

Urban forest canopy cover, vegetation, and site characteristics, Twin Cities Metro Area, 2022 and 2023.

This data was primarily collected to assess forest quality within the Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) Metropolitan Area and to link above-ground and below-ground properties as part of the goals of the MSP-LTER Urban Tree Canopy research group. Here, we sampled vegetation on 48 circular plots with a 12.5 m radius distributed across 18 parks, registering the date of sampling, park and management agency names, the plot number, and geolocation (latitude, longitude, and elevation). The plots were randomly selected based on GEDI (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation instrument) 2021 footprints in the MSP Metropolitan Area along accessible forested areas inside public parks, where the management agency allowed sampling. In each plot, we measured forest structure and diversity metrics, species names and abundance, DBH, height, distance from the plot center, the height where each individual canopy starts, and the relative position, exposure, and density of each canopy. We also measured understory plant structure and diversity in 4 subplots per plot, totaling 192 subplots. In these subplots, we surveyed all individual plants with heights over 20 cm, recording species names and abundance, plant basal diameter, plant height, and the total number of branches. Furthermore, we assessed the canopy openness above each subplot by calculating percent DIFN (diffuse non-interceptance) from fish eye pictures of the canopy at 1.3 meters over the subplot.

Rhizaria abundance, biomass, and trophic interactions at the Northern Gulf of Alaska LTER site during summer 2023 cruise KM2308

This dataset consists of Rhizaria abundance, biomass, number of individuals with captured prey, and number of individuals that interacted with algal cells, by taxonomic group. Taxonomic group ID characteristics and biomass calculation details are also presented. Sampling occurred on NGA-LTER research cruise KM2308 during summer 2023 at four stations and four different depth-intervals. Seawater samples were collected from CTD-secured Niskin bottles, concentrated by reverse filtration with 50 μm mesh, and analyzed back in the lab with inverted epi-fluorescence microscopy. Excel spreadsheets were converted to CSV files for preservation. These data are part of the Northern Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research (NGA LTER) program. The LTER program is a National Science Foundation–funded network of 28 sites nationwide that focus on the influence of long-term and large-scale phenomenon on ecosystems. Additional funding for sampling is provided by the North Pacific Research Board (NPRB), the Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS), and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council (EVOS) via the Gulf Watch Alaska program.

Biocomplexity at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Coordinated Field Studies: Riparian Littoral Sites 2001 - 2004

General descriptive data for sites sampled as part of the "cross-lake comparison" segment of the Biocomplexity Project (Landscape Context - Coordinated Field Studies). The goal of the study was to explore the links between terrestrial and aquatic systems across a gradient of residential development and lake landscape position. Specifically, this project attempted to relate the abundance of Coarse Wood in the littoral zone with abiotic, biotic and anthropogenic features of the adjacent shoreline. Sampling Frequency: each site sampled once Number of sites: 488 sites on 61 Vilas County lakes were sampled from 2001-2004 (approximately 15 different lakes each year; eight sites per lake).

Individual plant growth and reproduction in the black sand extended growing season experiment for East Knoll, Audubon, Lefty, and Trough sites, 2018 - 2020.

As a result of climate change, the Rocky Mountain Front Range is experiencing warmer summers and earlier snowmelt. Due to the importance of snow for regulating soil temperature, growing season length, and available moisture in alpine ecosystems, even small shifts in the snow-free period could have large impacts. The focus of the Black Sand Extended Growing Season Length Experiment is to examine how terrain-related differences in climate exposure influence the way alpine habitats respond to climate change via earlier snowmelt. To simulate how climate exposure may affect plant communities, NWT LTER researchers established 5 experimental sites, each containing a pair 10 x 40m rectangular plots. These sites include north and south facing aspects, subalpine and alpine tundra meadows and a range of hydrological conditions (e.g. dry meadows, moist meadows, wet meadows). We accelerated snowmelt in one plot at each site by adding chemically inert black sand, while keeping the second plot as an unmanipulated control; black sand was added to control plots after snow had naturally melted. We used open top warming chambers (OTCs) to increase summer temperature in three subplots within each of the 10 x 40 m plots. This dataset includes measurements of growth and reproduction for Geum plants as well as counts of buds and flowers were counted and recorded for each tagged study plant, within all snow and warming treatments at all sites except Soddie.

Precipitation data for four sites on the eastern side of Delmarva Peninsula, 2001-2022

Rain gauges (Davis Instruments rain collector with HOBO Event Recorder) were installed at four sites latitudinally along the Eastern Shore, VA to measure instantaneous rainfall. The logger only records when there is a precipitation event (0.2 mm minimum). We calculated daily rain totals and provided only dates with rain. The data represents the time period of 8/9/01 on for Mill, Garg, and Mosq sites and 10/16/01 on for Wach site. The system was down between October 2008 and December 2010. It was replaced by an upgraded system in January 2011 with new Davis tipping-bucket rain gauges and data loggers, and primary responsibility for data collection and processing shifted to VCR/LTER staff. This file will be updated when additional data is downloaded from the rain gauges.

GPS Locations of Seagrass Sites in Hog Island Bay and South Bay, VA 2010-2021

This dataset contains the GPS coordinates for plots within the Z. marina restoration in the Hog Island Bay and South Bay, VA that are sampled annually as part of the long-term restoration experiment. Plots were seeded between 2001-2008; 64 plots in Hog Island Bay (58 seagrass plots and 6 bare plots) and 12 plots in South Bay (6 seagrass plots and 6 bare plots) were sampled beginning in 2010. The bare sites in South Bay were no longer sampled after 2013 due to colonization by seagrass. Additional sites were identified in 2017 in areas of natural seagrass expansion - 6 in Hog Island Bay and 6 in South Bay.
