XXIst century projections of global forest soil and canopy air temperature offsets (CLM5.1, SSP5-8.5)
<p>The following dataset allows to reproduce the figures in <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ad1f04/pdf">Hes et al 2024 </a>. It is generated by CLM5.1 simulations following the SSP5-8.5 scenario and contains the temperature offset between forest and grassland for soil temperature T<sub>g </sub> and canopy air temperature T<sub>c.</sub> The offset temperatures (∆T<sub>g</sub> and ∆T<sub>c</sub>) are defined as the difference between the internal temperature of the forest tile minus the internal temperature of the grassland tile. For each grid cell, we compute the difference between the area-weighted average temperature in forests, and the area-weighted average temperature over grassland.</p> <p>We define the offset for minimum ∆T<sub>g,min</sub>, maximum ∆T<sub>g,max</sub> and mean ∆T<sub>g,mean</sub> soil temperature. ∆T<sub>g,min</sub> (respectively, ∆T<sub>g,mean </sub>and ∆T<sub>g,max</sub>) is derived by selecting the monthly minimum (respectively, mean and maximum) of the 6-hourly forest ∆T<sub>g </sub>and subtracting the simultaneous T<sub>g</sub> over grassland within a grid cell. We consider all grid cells that contain both more than 0% of tree PFT cover (forest) and more than 0% of grass PFT cover (grassland). T<sub>c</sub> offsets (∆T<sub>c,min</sub>,∆T<sub>c,max</sub> and ∆T<sub>c,mean</sub>) are generated using the same method although we note that unlike for ∆T<sub>g</sub>, the differentiation between forest and grassland T<sub>c</sub> also encapsulates a difference in height.<br><br>Here, we provide monthly data for minimum, maximum and mean soil and canopy air temperature for 3 forest PFT-based biomes (boreal, temperate and tropical) and for all forest PFTs (global).<br><br>For more information, refer to the Methods is <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ad1f04/pdf">Hes et al 2024</a></p>

Survey plots were located in the Toolik Lake LTER fertilization experiment in Alaska; at Imnavait Creek, Alaska; at Paddus, Latnjajaure and the Stepps site near Abisko in northern Sweden; at various sites in Adventdalen, Svalbard; in the Zackenberg valley, Northeast Greenland; at BEO near Barrow, Alaska and at the Anaktuvuk River Burn in Alaska. Mineral soil moisture and temperature data from unburned stands used in the effects of variations in post-fire organic layer thickness studies in the Delta Junction region, 1995-2003
This database contains measurements of mineral soil temperature and moisture collected in unburned stands as part of an analysis of variations in the depths of surface organic layers found in burned and unburned black spruce stands, and the effects of variations in depth of burning on soil temperature and moisture, and organic layer carbon stocks. Data for the overall study were collected between 1995 and 2003 by Eric Kasischke (University of Maryland), Kathy O'Neill (Duke University), and Jill Johnstone (University of Alaska Fairbanks). Sites were located in burned black spruce stands within the perimeters of three recent fires (1987, 1994, and 1999), unburned black spruce stands adjacent to the burned stands, and within one black spruce stand that burned in 1956. The three fires were: (a) the 1987 Granite Creek fire located 15 km to the east of Delta Junction, Alaska USA, bordering the Alaska Highway on the North and Jarvis Creek on the south; the 1994 Hajdukovich Creek fire located 45 km southeast of Delta Junction Alaska, USA, bordering the Alaska Highway to the North and the Gerstle River to the West, and the 1999 Donnelly Flats fire, located 8 km south of Delta Junction, bordering Jarvis Creek to the east and the Richardson Highway on the west. Data that were collected and are in databases associated with this project include:; (1) organic layer depths in burned stands; (2) organic layer depths in unburned stands; (3) basal diameters of overstory trees in unburned stands and distance measures that can be used to estimate stand density; (4) mineral soil temperature and moisture data in burned stands; (5) mineral soil temperature and moisture data in unburned stands; and (6) bulk density and percent carbon data from different organic layers in unburned stands.

APEX Fen uses a full-factorial water table (flooded or raised, lowered or drained, and control treatments, as well as a moisture gradient) by warming manipulation (warmed, unwarmed treatment).
