Tree data: Effects of Deer on Growth and Establishment of Woody Vegetation in Old Fields
The purpose of this experiment is to measure the effects of deer on the growth and establishment of woody vegetation in old fields. This experiment is located in fields A and B. There are 6 plots in each field. Each plot is 10 by 30 meters, with the long axis perpendicular to the field/woods margin. Plots within a field are spaced at least 5 meters apart. Approximately 5 meters of the 30 meters length extends into the woods, the remaining 25 meters extend out into the field. Each plot is divided into twelve, 5 by 5 meter sections. Six quadrats were placed within each exclosure in each 5 meters of length. Plots are located randomly within each of those blocks. To assign locations randomly a grid was set up from 0 - 4 along the length and 0 - 9 along the width of each plot and random numbers were drawn in pairs, one from each of the random distributions. The plots were marked with rebar. Three plots in each field are fenced with poultry netting, approximately 2 meters high, to exclude deer.
Consequences of intraspecific and interspecific biodiversity in willows and poplars: Tree growth and herbivory
Research addressing the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function abounds (Balvanera et al. 2006; Cardinale et al. 2012) though most researchers have focused on the effects of either intraspecific or interspecific diversity on ecological function. Research at Cedar Creek and elsewhere has documented associations between species diversity (?interspecific diversity?), species interactions and many ecological functions, including primary productivity, nutrient cycling, soil and water quality, ecosystem stability, and resistance to invasion. (Tilman et al. 1996; Symstad et al. 2003; Hooper et al. 2005; Balvanera et al. 2006; Quijas et al. 2010) In parallel, research in systems such as goldenrod (Crutsinger et al. 2006, 2008a,b, 2009; Souza et al. 2011) and poplar (Schweitzer et al. 2004, 2008; Bailey et al. 2005; Madritch et al. 2009; Fischer et al. 2010; Courty et al. 2011; Lowejewski et al. 2012; Robinson et al. 2012), among others, has demonstrated the relationship between genotypic diversity (?intraspecific diversity?) and a similar group of functions that include primary productivity; nutrient cycling; resistance to invasion; ecosystem stability; microbial, epiphyte, and arthropod community diversity; litter decomposition; and fungal endophyte and mycorrhizal associations. Taken together, these two discourses suggest that interspecific and intraspecific diversity jointly drive species interactions and structure ecosystem processes including primary productivity, nutrient dynamics, resistance to and resilience following disturbance. Yet the relative roles of intraspecific versus interspecific diversity in structuring these processes remain uncharacterized. Data from: Light availability predicts mortality probability of conifer saplings in Swiss mountain forests better than radial growth and tree size
<p>Radial and height growth rates are suitable indicators of impending tree mortality risk of adult trees, but their applicability to saplings remains unknown. We compared radial growth of living and dead saplings of different heights and quantified the effects of light availability, growth and tree size on mortality. We sampled an equal number of living and dead saplings of four coniferous tree species (<i>Pinus cembra</i>, <i>Larix decidua</i>, <i>Picea abies</i>, <i>Abies alba</i>) in nine forests along an elevational gradient of the Swiss Alps. Based on tree-ring widths reconstructed from stem disks at multiple tree heights, we calculated radial growth rates. We observed a divergent pattern in radial growth of living and dead saplings, with reduced growth of dead saplings starting several years prior to death. By matching living and dead saplings of similar ages, we tested whether mortality probabilities of saplings were influenced by light availability, recent growth rates and diameter. Mortality of coniferous saplings in mountain forests was mainly influenced by light availability, with changing effects along the elevational gradient. Recent radial growth rate and tree size were only weakly associated with sapling mortality. Our study establishes the importance of long-term predisposing factors for the mortality probability of conifer saplings in mountain forests, thus extending well-established findings from the adult stage to saplings, which represent a critical stage of forest dynamics.</p>
