Data from: Environmental and anthropogenic factors mediating the functional connectivity of the mesquite lizard along the eastern Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt

<p>Functional connectivity, the extent to which a landscape facilitates or impedes the dispersal of individuals across the landscape, is a key factor for the survival of species. Anthropogenic activities such as urbanization, agriculture, and roads, negatively impact functional connectivity of most species, particularly low-vagility species like lizards. Here, we examine how a landscape modified by anthropogenic activities affects the functional connectivity, at both broad and fine scales, of a widely distributed generalist lizard <em>Sceloporus grammicus</em> in the eastern Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, Mexico. We estimated for the first time the species genetic structure, gene flow, and functional connectivity in agricultural and forest zones using genomic data, a comprehensive landscape characterization, and novel methods including gravity models. Our results showed marked genetic differentiation across the study region but also that functional connectivity is maintained for tens of kilometers despite <em>S. grammicus</em> low vagility. Specifically, we found that substrate and air temperature facilitated connectivity over broad and fine scales, respectively, while agricultural cover, relative humidity, and slope were important for connectivity and gene flow. Contrastingly, forest cover and roads favored (broad-scale) and limited (fine-scale) connectivity, likely associated with movement facilitated by small forest patches and with thermoregulation. Altogether, these results support that <em>S. grammicus</em> alternates its thermoregulatory behavior depending on the distance traveled and the habitat environmental conditions, and that it can disperse through relatively modified landscapes, mainly using agricultural zones. The information obtained is crucial to understanding the response of lizards to current anthropogenic pressures and their potential to adapt.</p>

Improving Volcanic SO2 Cloud Modeling Through Data Fusion and Trajectory Analysis: A Case Study of 2022 Hunga Tonga Eruption

<p><strong>Dataset Overview</strong>: This dataset comprises approximately 500 clusters of aggregated observational data collected from January 16 to 20 during the ascending (ASC) and descending (DES) periods. We grouped a large number of observation points into these clusters and calculated trajectories from the center of each cluster. The choice of 500 clusters was driven by pragmatic considerations, aiming for a balance between computational feasibility and the level of detail needed for our analysis.</p> <p><strong>Data Unit Description</strong>: The "mass" values in this dataset for each cluster are calculated by multiplying the mass per unit area (<span><span>g/m2</span></span>) of individual data points by the area covered by each point, thus providing the total mass in grams (g). The "heights" are presented in units of kilometers (km), representing the observed top heights of each cluster.</p>

Geochronological and geochemical data of volcanic deposits of the Central Main Ethiopian Rift

<p>This database represents a collection of geochronological data, geochemistry of bulk rocks and melt inclusions from a large set of samples collected in the framework of two field surveys (2019, 2020) in the Central Main Ethiopian Rift.</p> <p>This dataset provides supporting information to the paper:<br>Franceschini Z., Cioni R., Scaillet S., Prouteau G., Corti G., Sani F., Mondanaro A., Frascerra D., Melaku A.A., Scaillet B., Oppenheimer C., Duval F. (2024) "Pulsatory volcanism in the Main Ethiopian Rift and its environmental consequences", Nature Communications Earth and Environment.</p> <p>The samples have been prepared for the different analyses at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Florence. The geochronological analyses building up the dataset have been performed at the Argon facility at the Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orl&eacute;ans (ISTO), in France. The analythical methods related to the 40Ar/39Ar analyses are described in detail in the above mentioned paper.<br>The geochemical dataset contains the results of major and trace elements concentrations on whole rock samples (performed at the Service d'Anlayse des Roches et des Mineraux -CNRS - CRPG of Nancy, in France) and major elements and volatile concentrations of melt inclusions belonging to four ignimbrite samples (analysed with an Electron Micro Probe Analyzer housed at the laboratories of the Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orl&eacute;ans, in France).</p> <p>These datasets have been performed in the frame of a PhD fellowship (granted to Zara Franceschini) funded by the Universit&agrave; Italo Francese (Bando Vinci 2018, n. C3-1717) and also partially supported by the Italian Ministero dell'Universit&agrave; e della Ricerca (MiUR) through PRIN grant 2017P9AT72.</p>

Checklist of lichens from the Volcanic Rocks of Spain (Canary Islands excluded)

<p><span>The dataset includes 3529 records of 395 species. It includes: (1) data from several field studies conducted in the volcanic area of the central zone (Campo de Calatrava) during the years 2021-2024; (2) records from collections made in 2006 in the Chafarinas Islands; and (3) bibliographic data from other volcanic areas of Spain (excluding the Canary Islands). In the central zone (basalts), 171 species have been identified; in the E-SE zone (basalts), 84 species; in the SE zone (mainly andesites), 146 species; in the NE zone (basalts), 108 species; on the Chafarinas archipelago (mainly andesites), 59 species; on the Columbretes Islands (basalts), 70 species; and on the Albor&aacute;n Island, less studied, only 6 species have been identified. The checklist is annotated with information about the species, province, municipality, locality, geographical position, altitude, habitat type, collector&rsquo;s name, date, and associated reference.</span></p>

2018 Life Aquatic in the Volcanic Aftermath, Water Column Data

<p>This dataset consists of samples taken at various depths in the water column from niskin bottles attached to a CTD rosette on the HOT LAVA cruise in 2018. Kilauea volcano on the island of Hawaii was in a violent eruptive phase in the summer of 2018, with significant activities both at the summit caldera and at several points along the East Rift Zone. This rare event provided a unique opportunity to investigate hydrothermal processes at the lava-seawater contact zone (Kapoho Bay region) and the impacts of volcanic aerosol and ash deposition on surrounding marine ecosystems. The objective of the HOT LAVA cruise was to sample the ocean surrounding the lava entry point and then to track the satellite-derived chlorophyll plume that extended to the south. Operationally, a Seaglider was deployed to conduct profiling transects and CTD stations were occupied to sample microbes and biogeochemistry associated with blue water, green water, and geothermal grey water, reflecting waters differentially impacted by lava influx into coastal waters. A towfish was also deployed to sample for trace metal analyses.</p>
