TunSwitch: Code-Switched Tunisian Arabic Speech Dataset
<p>We developed a tool for collecting Tunisian dialect data, prompting users to record themselves reading provided phrases. We sourced sentences from Tunisiya. These sentences are consequently removed from the LM training corpus. 89 persons have participated leading to the collection of 2631 distinct phrases. This set will be called TunSwitch TO, ``TO" standing for Tunisian Only, as these sentences do not have non-Tunisian words. </p> <p>In response to the limited availability of paired Text-Speech Tunisian datasets with code-switching, we have built a corpus through meticulous manual annotation. Whenever encountered, French and English words are enclosed within "<>" tags, and left Tunisian words without any enclosing tags. While these tags have not been used in the proposed models, they allow to have language-usage statistics and may be useful for further approaches handling code-switching. The resulting set is released as TunSwitch CS, ``CS" standing for Code-Switched.</p> <p>The TunSwitch CS dataset samples come from a set of radio shows and podcasts, representing diverse topics and a large number of unique speakers. The audio are first segmented into chunks, prioritizing word integrity using the WebRTC-VAD algorithm for silence detection. Afterward, we used a Pyannote overlap detection model to remove overlapping speech sections. Then, a music detection model is employed to eliminate music-containing chunks that could disrupt ASR model accuracy. <br> </p> <p> </p>

An Arabic Dataset for Disease Named Entity Recognition with Multi-Annotation Schemes
<p>This is a novel data descriptor that provides the Arabic natural language processing community with a dataset dedicated to named entity recognition tasks for diseases. The dataset comprises more than 60 thousand words, which were annotated manually by two independent annotators using the inside-outside (IO) annotation scheme. To ensure the reliability of the annotation process, the inter-annotator agreements rate was calculated, and it scored 95.14\%. Due to the lack of research efforts in the literature dedicated for studying Arabic multi-annotation schemes, a distinguishing and a novel aspect of this dataset is the inclusion of six more annotation schemes that will bridge the gap by allowing the researchers to explore and compare the effects of these schemes on the performance of the Arabic named entity recognizers. These annotation schemes are IOE, IOB, BIES, IOBES, IE, and BI. Additionally, five linguistic features, including part-of-speech tags, stopwords, gazetteers, lexical markers, and the presence of the definite article, are provided for each record in the dataset.</p>
The reliability and validity of an Arabic version of the modified Japanese Orthopedic Association score for cervical myelopathy
<p><b>Purpose: </b>The modified Japanese Orthopedic Association score (mJOA) is considered as one of the most comprehensive scores in assessment of patients with cervical myelopathy. Hence, comes the need for providing a validated, translated and cross-culturally adapted versions in different languages in order to standardize patient's evaluation. This study aims to translate and validate an Arabic version of the mJOA.</p> <p><b>Methods: </b>65 patients of variable age and etiologies for compressive cervical myelopathy were recruited. Forward and backward translations were performed, followed by measurement of intra-observer and inter-observer reliability using intra-class correlation coefficient and Cronbach's alpha coefficient.</p> <p><b>Results: </b>The patients had a mean age of 58.08, predominantly males (69.2%). The intra-observer reliability and inter-observer reliability showed almost perfect agreement for the different sections and the total score, with 96.8 and 97.4, respectively.</p> <p><b>Conclusion: </b>This study provides a reliable, cross-culturally adapted Arabic version of mJOA for cervical myelopathy patients. Although the study was conducted on Egyptian patients, we believe it could be implemented with majority of Arabic speaking population.</p>
