DEATHSTAR - Nearby AGB stars with the Atacama Compact Array
<p>Low- and intermediate-mass stars develop slow and massive stellar winds when they reach the end of their lives. Investigating the mass-loss phenomenon on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) is crucial in gaining a better understanding of late stellar evolution, as well as of the galactic chemical evolution, as AGB stars contribute significantly to the enrichment of the interstellar medium. DEATHSTAR is a large project aimed at improving the accuracy of stellar wind-parameter measurements. Constraining the size of the CO-emitting circumstellar envelope is the first step of the project, by mapping the envelopes in CO J=2–1 and 3–2 lines with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA). The first published DEATHSTAR sample consists of 69 nearby (<1 kpc) AGB stars of the three chemical types. In this video, I present the results from our initial analysis and the current status of the DEATHSTAR project.</p>

The professional setup outperforms the compact camera, producing a sharper image when specimens larger than a few centimetres are set to fill the frame optimally.

Data from: A transient ischemic environment induces reversible compaction of chromatin
Background: Cells detect and adapt to hypoxic and nutritional stress through immediate transcriptional, translational and metabolic responses. The environmental effects of ischemia on chromatin nanostructure were investigated using single molecule localization microscopy of DNA binding dyes and of acetylated histones, by the sensitivity of chromatin to digestion with DNAseI, and by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) of core and linker histones. Results: Short-term oxygen and nutrient deprivation of the cardiomyocyte cell line HL-1 induces a previously undescribed chromatin architecture, consisting of large, chromatin-sparse voids interspersed between DNA-dense hollow helicoid structures 40–700 nm in dimension. The chromatin compaction is reversible, and upon restitution of normoxia and nutrients, chromatin transiently adopts a more open structure than in untreated cells. The compacted state of chromatin reduces transcription, while the open chromatin structure induced upon recovery provokes a transitory increase in transcription. Digestion of chromatin with DNAseI confirms that oxygen and nutrient deprivation induces compaction of chromatin. Chromatin compaction is associated with depletion of ATP and redistribution of the polyamine pool into the nucleus. FRAP demonstrates that core histones are not displaced from compacted chromatin; however, the mobility of linker histone H1 is considerably reduced, to an extent that far exceeds the difference in histone H1 mobility between heterochromatin and euchromatin. Conclusions: These studies exemplify the dynamic capacity of chromatin architecture to physically respond to environmental conditions, directly link cellular energy status to chromatin compaction and provide insight into the effect ischemia has on the nuclear architecture of cells.

<p>The project “The reconfiguration of the European Union presence in Latin America and the Caribbean” (EUinLAC) was conceived and launched between 2019 and 2020. The European Union Jean Monnet programme generously financed it in 2020 and the project activities were carried out between 2020 and 2023. The project was designed to promote both research and teaching on European Union (EU)-Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) relations. The first mission was accomplished with the publication of the volume named after the project “The Redefinition of EU presence in Latin America and the Caribbean”, which brings together 18 original contributions on the topic and was published by Peter Lang in 2023. The second objective was met by the release of this innovative open educational resource, or teaching tool, an undertaking that Friedrich-Alexander University Press enthusiastically embraced and published in full open access to reach as wide an audience as possible.</p>
