Controlled packing and single-droplet resolution of 3D-printed functional synthetic tissues

<p>3D-printing networks of droplets connected by interface bilayers is a powerful platform to build synthetic tissues, in which functionality relies on precisely ordered structures. However, the structural precision and consistency in assembling these structures is currently limited, which restricts intricate designs and the complexity of functions performed by synthetic tissues. Here, we report that the equilibrium contact angle (<i>θDIB</i>) between a pair of droplets is a key parameter that dictates the tessellation and precise positioning of hundreds of picolitre droplets within 3D-printed, multi-layer networks. When <i>θDIB</i> approximates the geometrically-derived critical angle (<i>θc</i>) of 35.3º, the resulting networks of droplets arrange in regular hexagonally close-packed (hcp) lattices with the least fraction of defects. With this improved control over droplet packing, we can 3D-print functional synthetic tissues with single-droplet-wide conductive pathways. Our new insights into 3D droplet packing permit the fabrication of complex synthetic tissues, where precisely positioned compartments perform coordinated tasks.</p>

Elasticity and damping ratio measurement of droplets on super-hydrophobic surfaces

<p>The elasticity of the droplet refers to the ability of the droplet in restoring to its original shape and ensuring its strong robustness. The measurement of the droplets' elasticity is vitally important in understanding the characteristics and mechanism of the droplet jumping, spreading, and coalescence. In this paper, we measured the elasticity and damping ratio of droplets with different viscosity. A plate coated with a hydrophobic layer pressed on a droplet, and the elastic force was recorded by an electronic balance. Meanwhile, a mathematical model was constructed to illustrate the change rate of the droplet area with the elastic force. By comparing the influence of volume and viscosity on elasticity, the results showed that work done by pressure converts into surface energy. And the elasticity of the droplet is provided by the surface tension and the damping ratio increases from 0.068 to 0.261.</p>

Photographic data on the influence of the composition, preparation method, time and fuel system on the size of water droplets in a fuel-water emulsion

<p>This data was collected during the research aimed at understanding the influence of the composition, mixing time and time between the production and application of the fuel-water emulsion, as well as the influence of the fuel pump of the miniature gas turbine GTM-120 on the droplet size of the water-fuel emulsion. An emulsion with a water content of 3% to 15% and an emulsifier content of 1% to 3% was tested. The basic fuel in the conducted tests was Jet-A1 with 5% oil additive.&nbsp;</p>

Impact of atmospheric water-soluble iron on α-pinene-derived SOA formation and transformation in the presence of aqueous droplets

<p>The following data sets belong to the article "Impact of atmospheric water-soluble iron on &alpha;-pinene-derived SOA formation and transformation in the presence of aqueous droplets" The impact of water-soluble atmospheric iron on formation, growth and aging of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is a controversial subject in the literature. Iron chemistry drives Fenton-like reactions in the aqueous phase which is dependent on pH. Flow reactor experiments in the dark and under humid conditions were conducted to investigate systematically the influence of ferrous iron in the aqueous phase on &alpha;-pinene SOA by online physical analysis and offline high-resolution mass spectrometry. In total 31 flow reactor experiments were conducted in four sets of experiments. All SMPS data and mass spectra in negative mode are uploaded sorted by set of experiments and figures in the paper. You can find the workflow of SMPS data analysis as well as the retention times of the target analysis in the paper and SI.</p>
