Data for: Testing the match-mismatch hypothesis in bighorn sheep in the context of climate change
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In species with long gestation, females commit to reproduction several months before parturition. If cues driving conception date are uncoupled from spring conditions, parturition could be mistimed. Mismatch may increase with global change if the rate of temporal changes in autumn cues differs from the rate of change in spring conditions. Using 17 years of data on climate and vegetation phenology, we show that autumn temperature and precipitation, but not vegetation phenology, explain parturition date in bighorn sheep. Although autumn cues drive the timing of conception, they do not predict conditions at parturition in spring. We calculated the mismatch between individual parturition date and spring green-up, assessed whether mismatch increased over time and investigated the consequences of mismatch on lamb neonatal survival, weaning mass and overwinter survival. Mismatch fluctuated over time but showed no temporal trend. Temporal changes in green-up date did not lead to major fitness consequence of mismatch. Detailed data on individually marked animals revealed no effect of mismatch on neonatal or overwinter survival, but lamb weaning mass was negatively affected by mismatch. Capital breeders might be less sensitive to mismatch than income breeders because they are less dependent on daily food acquisition. Herbivores in seasonal environments may access sufficient forage to sustain lactation before or after the spring 'peak' green-up, and partly mitigate the consequences of a mismatch. Thus, the effect of phenological mismatch on fitness may be affected by species life-history, highlighting the complexity in quantifying trophic mismatches in the context of climate change. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
A test of the predator naiveté hypothesis using desert pupfishes: History of isolation does not matter
<p>Many desert fishes, which evolved in isolated aquatic "islands" with limited predation pressure, have been severely impacted by non-native predators. These impacts have been attributed to the evolutionary loss of antipredator competence, known as the predator naiveté hypothesis. Recent work provided support for this hypothesis for one desert fish species. We sought to examine the generality of predator naiveté hypothesis by evaluating antipredator competence in five populations of Red River pupfish (<em>Cyprinodon rubrofluviatilis</em>), a species that occupies habitats that vary in the degree of isolation and levels of fish species richness. Fish were exposed to conspecific chemical alarm cues released from damaged epidermal tissue as a general assay of antipredator response. We found that pupfish from all five populations exhibited antipredator behavior in response to alarm cues, regardless of isolation duration or exposure to predation risk. These data demonstrate that antipredator responses to alarm cues are conserved in pupfishes even after prolonged periods of isolation from piscivorous species.</p>
Data from: Individual contribution to niche expansion in amphibians: A test of the niche variation hypothesis
<p>The niche variation hypothesis (NVH) suggests that populations released from competition are able to expand their realized ecological niche (Van valen 1965; Bolnick et al. 2007). This increase in total niche width (TNW) can arise by i) increasing heterogeneity among individuals' niche through individual specialization, i.e. inter-individual variation in resource use, (IS – Bolnick et al., 2002; 2003) occurring when different individuals of a population use a subset of the population's resource pool, or ii) by expanding the niche of all individuals within the population (Bolnick et al. 2007). Although several morphological and phenotypical studies have confuted the NVH (e.g. Meiri et al. 2005), there is generally strong support for this hypothesis when behavioural or ecological traits are considered, and in particular when the trophic niche is measured at the individual level (Bolnick et al. 2007; Maldonado et al., 2017). In this study our primary aim is to corroborate the NVH, providing robust evidence for a significant and positive relationship between population TNW and IS in amphibian populations, at a global scale.</p>
