Benin Leopard Mask

This lead and ivory head of a leopard is an Edo ceremonial costume attachment from the [royal court of of Benin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Benin), now incorporated into the modern [republic of Nigeria](http://www.geonames.org/2328926/federal-republic-of-nigeria.html). Much Benin art was looted following the violent Benin Expedition of 1897. The expedition was mounted to avenge the defeat by the Binis of a British invasion force that had violated Benin territory earlier in 1896. The number of Edo killed are unknown but acknowledged as very numerous. The story of Benin artwork is at the heart of an ongoing debate about cultural restitution. JCURA 2024 PyLC Image Testing Set and Landcover Masks
<p>This is the image and landcover mask testing set created for the 2024 JCURA project "Mountains of Confusion: Evaluating Image Enhancement to Improve AI Landscape Classification" by Larissa Bron. </p> <p>The Python Landscape Classification tool (PyLC) [https://github.com/scrose/pylc] was trained using 95 images from two researcher's work, [Fortin (2018)](https://dspace.library.uvic.ca/items/0a911eb0-53bf-4a82-a75a-8b6949c28edd) and [Jean et al. (2015)](https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7045940), and tested with 19 images that were a combination of 11 images from Fortin and Jean withheld from training and 8 images from the Landscapes in Motion project [(Higgs et al., (2020))](https://friresearch.ca/publications/advances-visual-applications-visualizing-quantifying-landscape-change-sw-alberta-using). This core set of training and testing images was used to train the colour models of PyLC with repeat images, then these images were grayscaled and added to training the grayscale models of PyLC with historic images. </p> <p>For this JCURA project, the testing image set was updated to: 1) Incorporate images from more geographic areas, and 2) Remove images with reference land cover masks with large errors. </p> <p>The files included are 24 test images (.jpg, .tiff, .tif) and 24 manually annotated land cover masks (.png). File names indicate: Researcher_ImageIdentifier_Time where time is whether the image is a historic capture or a repeat. </p>

Impact of Community Masking on COVID-19: A Cluster-Randomized Trial in Bangladesh

Species-level CWM values mask contrasting intra- vs interspecific trait shifts at subtropical forest edges
<p>Altered microclimatic conditions and higher disturbance at forest edges create environmental stress and modify resource gradients from edge to interior, changing the selection pressures acting on individuals. Although community-weighted trait-mean (CWM) shifts along edge gradients have been widely documented at the species level, it is unclear how edge effects act at the individual level, and whether the direction of intraspecific trait shifts mirrors that of CWM shifts in response to edge effects. On 20 islands in the Thousand Island Lake, China, we established 484 plots (2×2 m) in a stratified random design across distances of 0 – 128 m from the forest edge. Within each plot, we sampled leaves (n=34,768) from within and among all 2,993 individuals of 68 species and measured five leaf traits (leaf area, LA; specific leaf area, SLA; leaf dry matter content, LDMC; thickness, LT; chlorophyll content, LCC). Using generalized linear mixed models, we found that different leaf traits exhibited contrasting shifts in inter- vs. intraspecific trait variation in response to edge effects. For SLA, LT, and LCC, negative covariance between inter- and intraspecific trait shifts resulted in dampening of community-wide trends compared to CWM response to edge effects. In contrast, the community-wide trend for LDMC was reinforced due to positive covariance between inter- and intraspecific trait shifts, while for LA the direction of covariance shifted from negative to positive on small vs. large islands. Together, edge effects alter selection regimes in reassembling plant communities. Predicting the community-wide consequences depends on the degree to which there is negative vs. positive covariance between species sorting and within-species adaptation. The widely-used CWM approach can mask contrasting trait selection pressures acting on individuals within local populations. Individual-level trait variation can improve understanding of community re-assembly trajectories in response to global environmental change.</p>
Face mask detection and masked facial recognition dataset (MDMFR Dataset)
<p>The unavailability of a unified standard dataset for face mask detection and masked facial recognition motivated us to develop an in-house MDMFR dataset (<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1319157821003633#b0170">MDMFR, 2022</a>) to measure the performance of face mask detection and masked facial recognition methods. Both of these tasks have different dataset requirements. Face mask detection requires the images of multiple persons with and without mask. Whereas, masked face recognition requires multiple masked face images of the same person. Our MDMFR dataset consists of two main collections, 1) face mask detection, and 2) masked facial recognition. There are 6006 images in our MDMFR dataset. The face mask detection collection contains two categories of face images i.e., mask and unmask. Our detection database consists of 3174 with mask and 2832 without mask (unmasked) images. To construct the dataset, we captured multiple images of the same person in two configurations (mask and without mask). The masked facial recognition collection contains a total of 2896 masked images of 226 persons. More specifically, our dataset includes the images of both male and female persons of all ages including the children. The images of our dataset are diverse in terms of gender, race, and age of users, types of masks, <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/computer-science/illumination-condition">illumination conditions</a>, face angles, occlusions, environment, format, dimensions, and size, etc. Before being fed to our DeepMaskNet model, all images are scaled to a width and height of 256 pixels. All images have a bit depth of 24. We prepared the images of our dataset for the proposed DeepMaskNet model during preprocessing where images are cropped in Adobe-Photoshop to exclude the extra information like neck and shoulder. As the input size of our Deepmasknet model was 256-by-256, so images were resized to 256-by-256 in publicly available Plastiliq Image Resizer software (<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1319157821003633#b0215">Plastiliq, 2022</a>).</p>
