Morphogenesis of curved strutural envelopes - Presentation of the PhD work of Xavier Tellier
<p>This video is a recording of a live presentation of the PhD work of Xavier Tellier. Here is a summary of the dissertation:</p> <p>Curved structural envelopes combine mechanical efficiency, architectural potential and a wide design space to fulfill functional and environment goals. The main barrier to their use is the complexity of manufacturing, assembly and design. Significant progress has been made recently in the field of architectural geometry to tackle this issue, but many challenges remain. In particular, the following problem is recurrent in a designer’s perspective: Given a constructive system, what are the possible shapes, and how to reach them in an intuitive fashion?</p> <p>This thesis presents a panorama of morphogenesis (i.e shape creation) methods under fabrication constraints. It then introduces four new methods to generate families of surfaces with particular geometrical properties which can significantly simplify the manufacturing of curved structures. Most common typologies are considered: gridshells, plated shells, membranes and funicular vaults. A particular attention is devoted to how surfaces are controlled in order to guaranty an intuitive generation.</p> <p>Two of the proposed families allow to design novel structural systems, while the two others combine fabrication properties with inherent mechanical efficiency. The feasibility of these new structural morphologies is demonstrated by the construction of two pavilions.</p>
PhD-delay Dataset for Online Stats Training
<p>This is a dataset used for the online stats training website (<a href="https://www.rensvandeschoot.com/tutorials/">https://www.rensvandeschoot.com/tutorials/</a>) and is based on the data used by <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0068839">Van de Schoot, Yerkes, Mouw and Sonneveld 2013</a></p> <p> </p> <p>Among many other questions, the researchers asked the Ph.D. recipients how long it took them to finish their Ph.D. thesis (n=333). It appeared that Ph.D. recipients took an average of 59.8 months (five years and four months) to complete their Ph.D. trajectory. The variable B3_difference_extra measures the difference between planned and actual project time in months (mean=9.97, minimum=-31, maximum=91, sd=14.43). For the the exercises we are interested in the question whether age (M = 31.7, SD = 6.86) of the Ph.D. recipients is related to a delay in their project. The relation between completion time and age is expected to be non-linear. This might be due to that at a certain point in your life (i.e., mid thirties), family life takes up more of your time than when you are in your twenties or when you are older. So, in our model the gapgap (<em>B3_difference_extra</em>) is the dependent variable and ageage (<em>E22_Age</em>) and age2age2(<em>E22_Age_Squared </em>) are the predictors.</p> <p>For more information on the sample, instruments, methodology and research context we refer the interested reader to <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0068839">Van de Schoot, Yerkes, Mouw and Sonneveld 2013</a>.</p> <p> </p>

Data on IEEE and Synthetic Test Power Systems for Oriol Cartiel's PhD
<p>The data used in my PhD thesis comes from internet repositories (see within files). It is based on detailed information from both IEEE n-bus test power systems and synthetic power grid test cases developed by the scientific community. The dataset, stored in spreadsheet format (.xlsx), includes comprehensive technical details such as line impedances, equivalent internal impedances, locations of generators, load demands and their locations, and shunt element specifications. All values are normalized to per-unit (pu), assuming a base power of 100 MVA. Additionally, the reference to the internet repository is available in the same file for potential further consultation.</p>
