Fishing activity hotspots in case study areas of the Mediterranean, Black and Atlantic Seas at 0.1°
<p>Statistically significant hotspots of fishing activities in specific case study areas (Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea, Balearic Sea, Baltic Sea, Bay of Biscay, Black Sea, Levantine Sea and North Sea) were identified by the application of the Getis-Ord Gi statistic (Getis and Ord 2010) though the statistical software R using the globalG.test function (spdep package). The function computes a global test for spatial autocorrelation using a Monte Carlo simulation approach. It tests the null hypothesis of no autocorrelation against the alternative hypothesis of positive spatial autocorrelation. Then the local spatial autocorrelation was tested calculating the Gi statistic, using the local_g_perm function (dfdep package), which indicates the strength of the clustering.</p> <p>Categorization of hotspots was performed, according to the Gi value and the p-value of a folded permutation test obtained for each grid cell, as follows:</p> <ul> <li>Gi>0 and p_value <=0.01 as Very hot</li> <li>Gi>0 and p_value <=0.05 as Hot</li> <li>Gi>0 and p_value <=0.1 as Somewhat hot</li> <li>Gi<0 and p_value <=0.1 as Somewhat cold</li> <li>Gi<0 and p_value <=0.05 as Cold</li> <li>Gi<0 and p_value <=0.01 à Very cold</li> </ul> <p>Grid cells with a p-value > 0.1 were categorized as Insignificant.</p> <p>The analyses were performed on cumulative fishing activity data at 0.1° resolution of nine different gears separately for the eight case study areas.</p> <p>Trawling hotspot cells categorized as “Very hot” (highly pressured) and “Hot” and “Somewhat hot” (medium pressured) were intersected with repositories of stocks and species-observation data (Coro et al., 2023) in order to retrieve information of species potentially caught by those fishing activities.</p> <p>The dataset presented includes for each case study area tables of species potentially caught within the trawling hotspots, maps of each gear hotspot, spatial layers of the gears hotspots (.shp; .csv)</p>

Faville Prairie State Natural Area Plant Community Study
Data were collected at the Faville Prairie State Natural Area in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Faville Prairie is a 60-acre (35.4 hectares) wet to wet-mesic remnant prairie. Plant species richness and abundance were collected at 180, 2x2m quadrats spaced 100 feet (30.48 meters) apart in a 15 x 12 grid. The impetus for the study was to detect changes in the plant community after a historic flooding event in the late spring of 2008. Previous data collected in 1978 at the same quadrats was used as "before" conditions and the 2010 sample was considered "after".
Plant Survey of Current Vegetation: MAP OF SONORAN DESERT PLANT COMMUNITY DISTRIBUTION IN THE CAPLTER STUDY AREA, PHOENIX, ARIZONA
This study represents an effort to map the distribution of plant community types across the Central Arizona - Phoenix Long Term Ecological Research (CAP-LTER) site centered in metropolitan Phoenix using Landsat ETM data. Vegetation classification was carried out using field data collected from within the study area describing woody plant species. A system was devised which represented a compromise between providing floristic information and enabling maximum spectral discrimination between community types. Image classification used reference spectra derived from training sites in the field and was carried out on subsets defined by soil surface texture in order to control for the strong background soil signature inherent to arid regions. While groundtruthing revealed that vegetation on clayey soils was mapped to 91% accuracy, other sections produced maps with less accuracy. The results of this study demonstrate that image classification of desert vegetation using only Landsat ETM data is problematic and may not be practical without other supporting data, such as radar imaging.This project attempts to produce a vegetation distribution map across undeveloped parcels of outlying desert wilderness, as well as remnant mountain parks throughout the city, contained within the Central Arizona Phoenix Long Term Ecological Research (CAPLTER) study area. This effort seeks to create the first successful classification map of Sonoran Desert vegetation derived from satellite imagery. The map would also be the first fine-scale map of plant community types in the Phoenix region. The depiction would allow for a calculation of the land area covered by each vegetation class, and which communities are exposed to development pressures. This map potentially provides a basis from which researchers can measure vegetative biomass distribution across the landscape and attempt to incorporate this component into ecological models of energy flows and biogeochemical cycling in the CAP-LTER site. SGS-LTER Historical LTER Soil water - neutron probe: field data (1983-1992) in ungrazed ESA (Ecosystem Stress Area) on the Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado, USA, ARS Study Number 10
This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. Long-term (1985-1992) dynamics and spatial variations in soil water below the evaporative zone were evaluated for a shortgrass steppe with a low and variable precipitation regime. Each of sandy loam, clay loam, and two sandy clay loam sites compromised a toposequence with upland, midslope, and lowland positions. Soil water was monitored at 15cm intervals providing estimates covering 22.5 to 97.5 cm depths. Soil water throughout the profile was highest in the clay loam and lowest in the sandy loam. Water, nitrogen, and water-plus-nitrogen at levels beyond the range normally experience by shortgrass steppe communities were applied from 1971 through 1975, plant densities were sampled through 1977, and then sampling resumed in 1982, with sampling frequencies changing from annually to every other year. The initial sampling from 1970 to 1974 showed that the water and water plus nitrogen treatments had the strongest effect on plant community structure, both treatments increased biomass, and exotic weed species were noted on the water plus nitrogen treatment. Later sampling from 1982 to 1991 showed a ten-fold increase in exotic weed species on the water plus nitrogen plots as compared to the controls (Milchunas and Lauenroth 1995), a community change that has persisted on this site due to a chronic elevation of soil nitrogen caused by a plant tissue/soil organic matter feedback mechanism (Vinton and Burke 1995). In 1998, Six new treatments were superimposed on the historic study site. The six new treatments were: control, sugar, lignin, sawdust, lignin and sugar, and sawdust and sugar.In 2010, plots will be sampled every 5 years. Our objective in this study is to examine how plant communities change through time and explore implications of these changes for monitoring

Data set for initializing and forcing of high-resolution local area model implementations in two ATLAS case study areas, Rockall Bank and Condor Seamount
<p>The data set includes all necessary data for set up, initial and boundary conditions of high-resolution local area model implementations using the ROMS-AGRIF model in two case study areas, Rockall Bank and Condor Seamount, conducted as part of the EU ATLAS project. The data include all computational grids, initialization fields (temperature, salinity) and boundary conditions (temperature salinity, currents, sea surface height) for each case study area.</p>
Datasets of studying Isoprene oxidation in urban and suburban areas
<p>Observational dataset including functionalized isoprene oxidation products, VOCs, trace gases, MET and organic aerosol composition measured at SORPES, Nanjing (118.9E,32.1N) and ECUST, Shanghai (121.5E,30.9N) during summer of 2018. The measurement period is July 13th- August 9th and June 21th-June 26th, respectively. The isoprene functionalized oxidation products were measured by NO3- CI-API-TOF, VOCs were measured by PTR-TOF-MS and ogrganic aerosol composition was measured by TOF-ACSM.</p>
Opportunities and challenges in achieving co-management in marine protected areas in East Africa: a comparative case study
<p>As marine ecosystems decline globally, scientists recommend increasing the coverage of marine protected areas (MPAs), but many are not effectively managed to deliver benefits. Community integration into MPA decision-making can increase management effectiveness by supporting behaviour change, but this poses implementation challenges. We examine differences in adaptive capacity, community engagement, and perceived MPA benefits using interviews and focal group meetings with two fishing communities from MPAs with different management strategies and geographic settings: a centrally managed MPA in Kenya and a co-managed MPA in Tanzania. We hypothesized that perceptions of MPA benefits and MPA support would be higher among fishers and fish vendors in the more collaboratively designed system in Tanzania, and supported by greater adaptive capacity. Indeed, far fewer Kenyan participants (37%) felt they benefited from the MPA compared to Tanzanian participants (95%). However, agency and trust were largely similar and challenges existed in both systems that reduced collaborative action including low interaction/communication between staff and community, internal leadership challenges, and social conflict. We identified pathways towards improved co-management that transcend systems: institutional prioritization of community integration, investment in community leadership, mapping social networks during MPA establishment, and adequate staffing and operational budgets.</p>

<p>Moose are among the many species that are vulnerable to both direcdt and indirect effects of climate change. Habitat selection is one framework to assist investigators in disentangling the various factors (including weather) that ultimately dictate how animals respond to their environment. We investigated patterns of winter habitat selecdtion by adult female moose in southerwestern MOntana, USA, during 2007-2010, and how that selection was affected by snow (quantified by snow water equivalent) and winter temperatures. We used data from GPS colalrs and a suite of environmental covariates to quantify winter habitat selection at both study area (2nd order) and home range (3rd order) spatial scales using resource selection functions. Moose strongly select for the willow (<em>Salix</em> spp.) cover type, and against grassland cover. Moose use of conifer cover at the home range scale increased when either amount of snow or ambient temperature was higher, altough the latter only during periods of the day when conifer pathces were likely to have been cooler than cover types lacking a canopy. Wildlife conservatoin and management naturally focuses on preferred habitats, particularly those that fulfill essentially all forgaing requirements. However, habitats used preferentially under stresful weather conditions, even if used rarely overall, can also form a critical part of a species' overall needs.,</p>
