Magnetic susceptibility, geochemical data from SDL section
<p>The Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO) disrupted long-standing cooling trend with a significant temperature rise due to elevated greenhouse gases. However, the dynamics of hydrological circulation and orbital influences during this epoch in eastern Asia remain underexplored. Employing magneto-cyclostratigraphic chronology, we analyzed samples from a 120-meter-thick section in inland Asia. Our findings highlight the profound influence of two orbital cycles on the MCO: the dominant 405-kyr eccentricity and the subtler 173-kyr obliquity band. These patterns shifted the summer movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone in East Asia, impacting northward moisture transport. Notably, we identified six drought events correlating with global phenomena like Antarctic cooling events and the Monterey Excursion. Enhanced by latitudinal insolation gradients, our results provide insights into climate variations on both regional and global scales, with implications for past and potential future scenarios.</p>
Data from: A range-expanding butterfly is susceptible to cold and long winters but shows no signs of local adaptation to winter conditions
<p>Numerous species shift or expand their ranges polewards in response to climate change. Even when expanding species follow their climatic niches, expanding range margin populations are likely to face unfamiliar environmental conditions and thus natural selection for local adaptation.</p> <p>The wall brown butterfly (<em>Lasiommata megera</em>) has expanded northwards in Sweden in the years 2000–2020, most likely as a result of climate change, and has previously been shown to have evolved local adaptations to northern daylength conditions. This evolution has occurred despite hypothesised genetic constraints to adaptation at range margins.</p> <p>We studied local adaptation to winter conditions in four of the previously-studied <em>L. megera</em> populations, using a common garden laboratory experiment with a warm and short, an intermediate, and a cold and long winter treatment. We compared the winter and post-winter survival of caterpillars from two southern core range and two northern range margin populations in Sweden.</p> <p>During the experiment, we measured metabolic rates of a subset of diapausing caterpillars to test whether populations differ in metabolic suppression during diapause. Further, we measured supercooling points, which reflect lower lethal temperature in <em>L. megera</em>, of the same subset of caterpillars. We also compared supercooling points between <em>L. megera</em> and three closely related species with more northern distributions.</p> <p>Few individuals survived the coldest treatment all the way to successful adult emergence, so <em>L. megera</em> seems susceptible to cold winters. Individuals of northern descent did not survive cold winters any better than individuals from southern populations. Similarly, there were no signs of local adaptation in metabolic rates or supercooling points. The comparison among species did not reveal any clear relationship between geographical distribution and supercooling point.</p> <p>Although northern winters probably exert strong selection on <em>L. megera</em>, we provide comprehensive evidence for the lack of local adaptation to winter conditions. This contrasts with the previous finding of quickly-evolved local adaptation in diapause timing, highlighting the need to consider how traits associated with different seasons differ in how they may evolve and facilitate climate change-induced range expansions.</p>
Susceptible and infectious states for both vector and host in a dynamic pathogen-vector-host system
<p>Deformed wing virus (DWV) is a resurgent insect pathogen of honey bees that is efficiently transmitted by vectors and through host social contact. Continual transmission of DWV between hosts and vectors is required to maintain the pathogen within the population, and this vector-host-pathogen system offers unique disease transmission dynamics for pathogen maintenance between vectors and a social host. In a series of experiments, we measured vector-vector, host-host and host-vector transmission routes and show how these maintain DWV in honey bee populations. We found co-infestations on shared hosts allowed for movement of DWV from mite to mite. Additionally, two social behaviors of the honey bee, trophallaxis and cannibalization of pupae, provide routes for horizontal transmission from bee to bee. Circulation of the virus solely amongst hosts through communicable modes provides a reservoir of DWV for naïve Varroa to acquire and subsequently vector the pathogen. Our findings illustrate the importance of community transmission between hosts and vector transmission. We use these results to highlight the key avenues used by DWV during maintenance and infection and point to similarities with a handful of other infectious diseases of zoonotic and medical importance.</p>

Data from: A natural gene drive system influences bovine tuberculosis susceptibility in African buffalo: possible implications for disease management
Bovine tuberculosis (BTB) is endemic to the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP) and Kruger National Park, South Africa. In HiP, the disease has been actively managed since 1999 through a test-and-cull procedure targeting BTB-positive buffalo. Prior studies in Kruger showed associations between microsatellite alleles, BTB and body condition. A sex chromosomal meiotic drive, a form of natural gene drive, was hypothesized to be ultimately responsible. These associations indicate high-frequency occurrence of two types of male-deleterious alleles (or multiple-allele haplotypes). One type negatively affects body condition and BTB resistance in both sexes. The other type has sexually antagonistic effects: negative in males but positive in females. Here, we investigate whether a similar gene drive system is present in HiP buffalo, using 17 autosomal microsatellites and microsatellite-derived Y-chromosomal haplotypes from 401 individuals, culled in 2002-2004. We show that the association between autosomal microsatellite alleles and BTB susceptibility detected in Kruger, is also present in HiP. Further, Y-haplotype frequency dynamics indicated that a sex chromosomal meiotic drive also occurred in HiP. BTB was associated with negative selection of male-deleterious alleles in HiP, unlike positive selection in Kruger. Birth sex ratios were female-biased. We attribute negative selection and female-biased sex ratios in HiP to the absence of a Y-chromosomal sex-ratio distorter. This distorter has been hypothesized to contribute to positive selection of male-deleterious alleles and male-biased birth sex ratios in Kruger. As previously shown in Kruger, microsatellite alleles were only associated with male-deleterious effects in individuals born after wet pre-birth years; a phenomenon attributed to epigenetic modification. We identified two additional allele types: male-specific deleterious and beneficial alleles, with no discernible effect on females. Finally, we discuss how our findings may be used for breeding disease-free buffalo and implementing BTB test-and-cull programs.
