High-frequency water quality data for three urban streams in Boston, MA (USA), 2021-2022

This dataset contains high-frequency water quality data for three urban stream locations in the great Boston, Massachusetts metropolitan area. Multiparameter sondes with sensors to measure temperature, pH, specific conductivity, optical dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and optical brighteners (OB) were deployed from 23 November 2021 to 20 December 2022. Data were collected at 15-minute intervals.

AquaMatch Secchi Disk Depth Data from Water Quality Portal: ~1970-2024

This dataset, “AquaMatch Secchi Disk Depth Data from Water Quality Portal ~1970-2024”, is a component of a forthcoming update to AquaSat (Ross et al., 2019), AquaSat version 2 (“V2”). The overarching purpose of AquaSat V2 is to emphasize the individual parts of the AquaSat pipeline that make up the matchups between satellite and in-situ measurements. As such, we have greatly expanded and improved upon the AquaSat Secchi Disk Depth dataset in two ways: First, we have incorporated additional recent in situ data beyond what was available at the publication of AquaSat. Second, we have created a data quality tiering system to provide end-users with more guidance on data usage. In this schema we have three tiers: restrictive data that are verifiably self-similar across organizations and time-periods and can be considered highly reliable; narrowed data that we have good reason to believe are self-similar, but for which we can not verify full compatibility across data providers; and inclusive data, which are assumed to be reliable and are harmonized to our best ability given the information available from the data provider. We have also added flag columns to help users understand complexities of the available depth and field sampling data. This dataset is a derived data product created using records downloaded from the Water Quality Portal (WQP) spanning January 10, 1970, to July 1, 2024. The WQP is a data warehouse for water-related data measured or observed within the United States and US Territories managed by the Environmental Protection Agency, United States Geological Survey, and the National Water Quality Monitoring Council. The dataset does not contain remote sensing matchups but can be paired with Landsat surface reflectances using the pipeline presented in Ross et al. (2019). Ross, M. R. V., Topp, S. N., Appling, A. Mohonk Preserve Amphibian and Water Quality Monitoring Dataset at 11 Vernal Pools from 1931-Present

"The Mohonk Preserve's Daniel Smiley Research Center has been monitoring species occupancy, reproductive success, and water quality of 11 vernal pools (Ski Loop, Bonticou, Terrace, Long Woodland Pool, Long Woodland Swamp, Oakwood, Sleepy Hollow, Hermits, North Mud Pond, Canaan, and Talus) on the Preserve each spring from April 1931 to May 2019 (present). This project aims to document changes in the reproductive behavior and phenology of amphibians and allow research access to historical, longitudinal records. The dataset is a paired record of amphibian occurence with environmental indicators spanning nearly 90 years of data collection. The dataset includes environmental conditions for the 730 sampling events associated with the species occurences with complete coverage air temperature and precipitation records and partial coverage for a variety of other weather and water quality measures. Species occurence data collection has included species identification and counts of live and dead adults, mated pairs, spermatophores, egg masses, juveniles, and tadpoles counts as well as a record of the level of frog calling. Weather conditions including precipitation, sky and wind codes; and water quality measurements including water temperature, pH, and depth. Collection of data was sporadic from 1931 - 1991 but has been collected consistently from 1991 to present. We also began monitoring dissolved oxygen, nitrate concentrations, and conductivity of the vernal pools using a YSI Sonde Professional Plus Instrument and turbidity using a turbidity tube in February 2018. From 2011 to 2017, an instrumented buoy maintained by Friends of the Lake (FOTL, friendsofthelake.org) and Fairfield University was deployed on Lake Lillinonah (Connecticut, USA) during the summer months to collect high-frequency water quality data. The buoy was deployed early each summer and remained in the lake until late October. The instrumented buoy was equipped with a YSI 6600 sonde at a depth of 1 meter. The YSI 6600 collected water temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductivity, pH, chlorophyll a fluorescence and phycocyanin fluorescence data. Additionally, the instrumented buoy is equipped with an In-Situ RDO sensor which collects water temperature and dissolved oxygen readings at a depth of 15 meters. Included in this data package are datasets containing 15-minute data as well as daily averages from all sensors. Following the summer of 2017, the YSI 6600 sonde was replaced with a YSI EXO2 sonde which collected data on the same variables. Data from the YSIEXO2 sonde, as well as data from the In-Situ RDO sensor during the same period, are available in the EDI data package EDI560. Additionally, the instrumented buoy at Lake Lillinonah is equipped with a water temperature thermistor chain . These data can be found in data packages EDI557 (2011-2015) and EDI558 (2018-current).

Water quality data collected by the Citizen-Led Environmental Observatory (CLEO) from multiple nearshore sites in Lake Lillinonah, Connecticut, USA, 2010-current

Included in this data package are water quality data from the Citizen-Led Environmental, a Observatory (CLEO) volunteer water quality monitoring program run by Friends of the Lake (FOTL) and Fairfield University at Lake Lillinonah, Connecticut, USA. The program has been operational since 2008 (data available 2010-current). Trained volunteer monitors collect data from dock locations across the lake on water temperature, Secchi disk depth, water color, presence of floating woody debris, recreation potential, trash, particle type and surface scum. Volunteers collect data between 3:00 and 7:00 PM three times per week from Memorial Day through Labor Day. In addition to the variables listed above, CLEO volunteers collect routine water samples on a biweekly basis, as well as any time there is a notable algal bloom. The routine samples are analyzed for nutrient (total nitrogen and total phosphorus) concentrations as well as concentrations of the cyanobacterial toxin microcystin. The blooms samples are analyzed for microcystin only. These data are available in EDI packages EDI568 (nutrients) and EDI569 (toxins).

UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Wetland Survey - Water Quality

These data describe measurements of water characteristics (temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen) collected as part of the SONGS San Dieguito Wetland Restoration mitigation monitoring program designed to evaluate compliance of the restoration project with conditions of the SONGS permit. Monitoring began in 2012 in the San Dieguito Wetlands and Tijuana Estuary in San Diego County, CA, Carpinteria Salt Marsh in Santa Barbara County, CA, and Mugu Lagoon in Ventura County, CA. Beginning in 2024, Tijuana Estuary was replaced with Los Penasquitos Lagoon in San Diego County, CA. Measurements of water depth, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen were recorded daily in fifteen minute intervals at two sampling stations (primary and backup) at the San Dieguito Wetland, Carpinteria Salt Marsh, and Mugu Lagoon, and one sampling station (primary) at the Tijuana Estuary (2012-2023) and Los Penasquitos Lagoon (2024-present).

LAGOS-NE-GIS v1.0: A module for LAGOS-NE, a multi-scaled geospatial and temporal database of lake ecological context and water quality for thousands of U.S. Lakes: 2013-1925

This data package, LAGOS-NE-GIS v1.0, is 1 of 5 data packages associated with the LAGOS-NE database-- the LAke multi-scaled GeOSpatial and temporal database. Three of the data packages each contain different types of data for 51,101 lakes and reservoirs larger than 4 ha in 17 lake-rich U.S. states to support research on thousands of lakes. These three package are: (1) LAGOS-NE-LOCUS v1.01: lake location and physical characteristics for all lakes. (2) LAGOS-NE-GEO v1.05: ecological context (i.e., the land use, geologic, climatic, and hydrologic setting of lakes) for all lakes. These geospatial data were created by processing national-scale and publicly-accessible datasets to quantify numerous metrics at multiple spatial resolutions. And, (3) LAGOS-NE-LIMNO v1.087.1: in-situ measurements of lake water quality from the past three decades for approximately 2,600-12,000 lakes, depending on the variable. This module was created by harmonizing 87 water quality datasets from federal, state, tribal, and non-profit agencies, university researchers, and citizen scientists. The other two data packages contain supporting data for the LAGOS-NE database: (4) LAGOS-NE-GIS v1.0: the GIS data layers for lakes, wetlands, and streams, as well as the spatial resolutions that were used to create the LAGOS-NE-GEO module. (5) LAGOS-NE-RAWDATA: the original 87 datasets of lake water quality prior to processing, the R code that converts the original data formats into LAGOS-NE data format, and the log file from this procedure to create LAGOS-NE. This latter data package supports the reproducibility of LAGOS-NE-LIMNO. The LAGOS-NE GIS v1.0 module includes GIS datasets for: lake polygons and their hydrologic classification; wetland polygons and their classification; streams as a line coverage and their classification by stream order; the zones used for this study (state and county; hydrologic units [at the 4, 8 and 12 scales]); and, lake watersheds (IWS). Water quality was monitored at nine intensive sites, nine hillslope sites, and three river sites in the Little Tennnesse River watershed, Macon County, NC in 2010-2013. The intensive sites were monitored in 2010-2011, the hillslope sites were monitored in 2012-2013, and the river sites were monitored 2010-2013. A Hach Hydrolab MS5 data sonde measured stream temperature, specific conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity every hour.

Airstones connected to Tygon tubing are inserted 10-15 cm below the soil surface. Biannually during the wet season, Monoject 140cc syringes are used to collect at least 80 mL of porewater sample and after collection they are immediately placed in an ice filled cooler. The lab processing of these samples include salinity measurements using a refractometer, and filtering the sample through a Whatman GF/F filter. Samples are analyzed for inorganic nutrients such as NO2-,NO3-,NH4+,SRP, and DOC. Dissolved nutrients are measured using standard rapid flow analyzer (RFA) techniques and DOC is quantified on a Shimadzu TOC Analyzer.

Institutional Dimensions of Restoring Everglades Water Quality - Social Capital Analysis (FCE), Florida Everglades Agricultural Area from September 2014 to July 2015

These data were compiled through the Institutional Dimensions of Restoring Everglades Water Quality research project. One of the manuscripts generated by this project focused on the social capital dynamics in the Everglades Agricultural Area. These data represent different social capital aspects reflected by the responses of interview subjects. The purpose of analyzing social capital was to explore why and how farmers cooperated given that the state law, the Everglades Forever Act, which required the adoption of best management practices, relied on shared compliance for farmers to improve water quality. The study sought to undrestand how different aspects of social capital (broadly pro-social norms of reciprocity and trust) either encouraged or discouraged farmers to adopt BMPs effectively.
