Sex-specific genetic (co)variances of standard metabolic rate, body mass and locomotor activity in Drosophila melanogaster
<p>A longstanding focus in evolutionary physiology concerns the causes and consequences of variation in maintenance metabolism. Insight into this can be gained by estimating the sex-specific genetic architecture of maintenance metabolism alongside other, potentially correlated traits on which selection may also act, such as body mass and locomotor activity. This may reveal potential genetic constraints affecting the evolution of maintenance metabolism. Here, we used a half-sibling breeding design to quantify the sex-specific patterns of genetic (co)variance in standard metabolic rate (SMR), body mass, and daily locomotor activity in <i>Drosophila melanogaster</i>. There was detectable additive genetic variance for all traits in both sexes. As expected, SMR and body mass were strongly and positively correlated, with genetic allometry exponents (<i>b</i><sub>A</sub>±se) of 0.66±0.16 in females and 0.58±0.32 in males. There was a significant and positive genetic correlation between SMR and locomotor activity in males, suggesting that alleles that increase locomotion have pleiotropic effects on SMR. Sexual differences in the genetic architecture were driven in large part by a difference in genetic variance in locomotor activity between the sexes. Overall, genetic variation was mostly shared between males and females, setting the stage for a potential intralocus sexual conflict in the face of sexually antagonistic selection.</p>

Bird species co-occurrence patterns in an Alpine environment supports the stress gradient hypothesis
<p>Understanding the relative contribution of different biotic interactions in shaping species assemblages constitutes a major goal in community ecology and consequently, multiple methods aimed at inferring the nature of these associations have emerged during the last decade. In this framework, the stress-gradient hypothesis (SGH) predicts that prevalent biotic interactions shift from competition to facilitation as abiotic stress increases (and productivity decreases). This hypothesis originally raised by plant ecologists has been barely applied to faunal communities. Here, we take advantage of 20 years of abundance data to investigate pairwise patterns in species co-occurrence in Alpine bird communities inhabiting two contrasting habitat types; forests (high-productivity) and mountain grasslands (low-productivity). We also integrate functional data with presence-absence and quantitative matrices in order to detect the signature of processes driving community assembly and test for limiting similarity. We employed a Bayesian approach, probabilistic pairwise association tests and joint Species Distribution Models; all methods revealed a higher frequency of positive interactions in mountain grasslands in agreement with what the SGH predicts. Both the frequency of positive and negative interactions remained moderately stable over the study period in both habitat types. There was no significant relationship between the degree of co-occurrence of species pairs and their functional distance in either habitat. However, when we only considered those combinations of species whose co-occurrence pattern deviated from that expected at random, we found that co-existing species are functionally more similar than those pairs that show segregated patterns in the forest assemblages. Such a relationship may arise via selective social information use and other processes including microhabitat preferences. Overall, our findings suggest that interspecific competition does not seem to be a major force driving the structure of bird assemblages in this mountain region.</p>
Data from: Colour ornamentation in the blue tit: quantitative genetic (co)variances across sexes
Although secondary sexual traits are commonly more developed in males than females, in many animal species females also display elaborate ornaments or weaponry. Indirect selection on correlated traits in males and/or direct sexual or social selection in females are hypothesized to drive the evolution and maintenance of female ornaments. Yet, the relative roles of these evolutionary processes remain unidentified, because little is known about the genetic correlation that might exist between the ornaments of both sexes, and few estimates of sex-specific autosomal or sex-linked genetic variances are available. In this study, we used two wild blue tit populations with 9 years of measurements on two colour ornaments: one structurally based (blue crown) and one carotenoid based (yellow chest). We found significant autosomal heritability for the chromatic part of the structurally based colouration in both sexes, whereas carotenoid chroma was heritable only in males, and the achromatic part of both colour patches was mostly non heritable. Power limitations, which are probably common among most data sets collected so far in wild populations, prevented estimation of sex-linked genetic variance. Bivariate analyses revealed very strong cross-sex genetic correlations in all heritable traits, although the strength of these correlations was not related to the level of sexual dimorphism. In total, our results suggest that males and females share a majority of their genetic variation underlying colour ornamentation, and hence the evolution of these sex-specific traits may depend greatly on correlated responses to selection in the opposite sex.

Size matters, but species do not: no evidence for species-specific swimming performance in co-occurring Great Basin stream fishes
<p>For fishes, swimming performance is an important predictor of habitat use and a critical measure for the design of effective fish passage systems. Few studies have examined burst and prolonged types of swimming performance among several co-occurring species, and swimming performance in many fish communities is undocumented. In this study, we characterize both burst (c-start velocity) and prolonged speed (critical swim speed) across a poorly documented, co-occurring group of stream fishes within the Great Basin of the western USA. We documented the variation in swim speed associated with species, habitat, and body size. Body size had an overwhelming effect on both burst speed and prolonged speed, whereas habitat use, and species identity were not significant predictors. Among species, there is no evidence of a trade-off between burst swim speed and prolonged swim speed. Lack of a trade-off in performance between burst swim speed and prolonged swim speed among species may be due to unexpectedly high prolonged swim speeds exhibited by species that used substrate bracing behaviors. Incorporating body size and variation in behavior, such as substrate bracing behaviors, into fish passage models will likely be sufficient to ensure passage of all species without the need to account for species-specific swimming abilities. However, these results characterize the swimming performance for threatened and common fish species such that other comparisons can be made and species-specific studies can access accurate data.</p>

Abiotic factors influence species co‐occurrence patterns of lake fishes
<p>This dataset contains the identity of the lakes used for the analyses performed in the paper: Cordero, R., & Jackson, D. (2021). Abiotic factors influence species co‐occurrence patterns of lake fishes. <i>Journal of Animal Ecology</i>. doi:10.1111/1365-2656.13587".</p> <p>This study analyzed the effect of habitat size (i.e., lake area and depth) on the pattern of co-occurrence of multiple fish species in lakes from two different regions, western and central, in Ontario, Canada.</p> <p>The main results of this study were that area and depth showed a significant influence across all the species co-occurrence patterns, in both regions. However, when analyzing groups of species involved in biotic interactions like predator-prey or species sharing similar habitat requirements, we found significant results only for lake area in the central region, which suggests a context-dependency on factors linked with region.</p> <p>Our results demonstrate the effect of environmental variables on species co-occurrence patterns, but the divergent results obtained between geographic regions suggest that such patterns are context-dependent. This study emphasizes the importance of considering abiotic factors in null models of species co-occurrence to obtain reliable and detailed information about the association patterns between species.</p>
Data from: Redox mediated carbon monoxide release from a manganese carbonyl—implications for physiological CO delivery by CORMs
<p><span>We evaluated the dynamics of hydrogen peroxide reactions with metal carbonyls. specifically a water-soluble manganese carbonyl. These files are the raw data for the quantitative mechanistic investigation of the H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> oxidation of the water-soluble model complex <i>fac</i>-[Mn(CO)<sub>3</sub>(Br)(bpCO<sub>2</sub>)]<sup>2–</sup>, (<b>A</b>, bpCO<sub>2</sub><sup>2–</sup> = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylate dianion). The method of intial rates was utilized in the experimental studies thus raw spectral data for the figures and results presented in RSOS-211022 were included. These data demonstrated pH-dependent kinetics. All the raw absorbance data used to determine the initial reaction rates and observed rate constant from pH 6.1-7.4, 8-32 mM [H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>]. and 19.5- 42<sup>o</sup>C are present. For soluble homogenous experiments, UV-Vis, Fluorescence assay, and FT-IR spectral data for conditions included in the manuscript. For insoluble products of the experiments, X-ray diffraction and ICP-AES raw data are included.</span></p> <p>There are several untested hypotheses about the mechanisms of the reaction of manganese carbonyl with reactive oxygen species. We found that intracellular pH greatly influences the reaction rate and may be a control for redox-mediated CO release from mangense CORMs. Since the lysosome is more acidic and mitochondrial matrix is more basic than the cytosol it is likely different local rates of CO release would be observed. Furthermore, in considering the localization and diffusion of H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> in biological systems, it is likely that a relatively slow reaction with manganese carbonyls (compared to catalase) can exhibit physiological effects. The cytotoxic effects of Mn(I) carbonyls have been associated with the generation of hydroxyl radicals, however we founs no appreciable quantities of hydroxyl radicals compared to known catalysts. Thus we conclude that these cytotoxic effects are more likely due to released CO interacting with heme-proteins vital to cellular respiration. Our mechanistic and kinetic findings provide literature precedence for researchers examining physiological effects of Mn(I) carbonyls.</p>
Multiple sequence alignments and phylogenetic trees from: Co-option of the limb patterning program in cephalopod eye development
<p>Background</p> <p><span>Across the Metazoa, similar genetic programs are found in the development of analogous, independently evolved, morphological features. The functional significance of this reuse and the underlying mechanisms of co-option remain unclear. Cephalopods have evolved a highly acute visual system with a cup shaped retina and a novel refractive lens in the anterior, important for a number of sophisticated behaviors including predation, mating and camouflage. Almost nothing is known about the molecular-genetics of lens development in the cephalopod.</span></p> <p><span>Results</span></p> <p><span>Here we identify the co-option of the canonical bilaterian limb pattering program during cephalopod lens development, a functionally unrelated structure. We show radial expression of transcription factors <i>SP6-9/sp1, Dlx/dll, </i><i>Pbx/exd, Meis/hth, </i>and a <i>Prdl</i> homolog in the squid <i>Doryteuthis pealeii</i>, similar to expression required in <i>Drosophila</i> limb development.<i> </i>We assess the role of Wnt signaling in the cephalopod lens, a positive regulator in the developing <i>Drosophila </i>limb, and find the regulatory relationship reversed, with ectopic Wnt signaling leading to lens loss. </span></p> <p><span>Conclusion</span></p> <p><span>This regulatory divergence suggests that duplication of SP6-9 in cephalopods may mediate the co-option of the limb patterning program. Thus our study suggests that the limb network could perform a more universal developmental function in radial pattering and highlights how canonical genetic programs are repurposed in novel structures.</span></p>
