<p>BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:</p> <p>The role of lifestyle and dietary habits and antecedent events has not been clearly identified in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP).</p> <p>METHODS:</p> <p>Information was collected about modifiable environmental factors and antecedent infections and vaccinations in patients with CIDP included in an Italian CIDP Database. Only patients who reported not having changed their diet or the lifestyle habits investigated in the study after the appearance of CIDP were included. The partners of patients with CIDP were chosen as controls. Gender-matched analysis was performed with randomly selected controls with a 1:1 ratio of patients and controls.</p> <p>RESULTS:</p> <p>Dietary and lifestyle data of 323 patients and 266 controls were available. A total of 195 cases and 195 sex-matched controls were used in the analysis. Patients eating rice at least three times per week or eating fish at least once per week appeared to be at decreased risk of acquiring CIDP. Data on antecedent events were collected in 411 patients. Antecedent events within 1-42&nbsp;days before CIDP onset were reported by 15.5% of the patients, including infections in 12% and vaccinations in 1.5%. Patients with CIDP and antecedent infections more often had an acute onset of CIDP and cranial nerve involvement than those without these antecedent events.</p> <p>CONCLUSIONS:</p> <p>The results of this preliminary study seem to indicate that some dietary habits may influence the risk of CIDP and that antecedent infections may have an impact on the onset and clinical presentation of the disease.</p>

Anxiety status and coping strategies in association with sociodemographic factors, dietary and lifestyle habits in Greece

<p><strong><em>Aim: </em></strong></p> <p>The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between nutritional habits, lifestyle, anxiety, and coping strategies</p> <p><strong><em>Background:</em></strong>&nbsp;</p> <p>Anxiety is an underestimated and often undiagnosed subclinical disorder, that burdens the general public of modern societies and increases illness susceptibility.</p> <p><strong><em>Method</em></strong><strong><em>s</em></strong><strong><em>:</em></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;Study group consisted of 693 individuals living in Peloponnese, Greece. A standardized questionnaire consisting the dietary habits and lifestyle questionnaire, the trait Anxiety STAI-X-2 questionnaire, the HAM-A questionnaire and the brief-COPE questionnaire was used. Principal components analysis identified the factors from the questionnaires and stepwise multivariate regression analysis investigated their relationships.</p> <p><strong><em>Results:</em></strong></p> <p>Weekly consumption of fruits, tomatoes, salads and lettuce, together with &Epsilon;motional/&Iota;nstrumental support, Denial/Behavioural disengagement, substance use and self-blame, were the most important predictors of anxiety scores. Positive reframing/Humour and Acceptance/Planning also associated with the Positive STAI factor and decreased anxiety scores</p> <p><strong><em>Conclusion:</em></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;Healthy nutritional habits, comprised by consumption of salads and fruits, together with adaptive coping strategies, such as Positive reframing/Humour and Active problem solving may provide the most profound improvement in the anxiety levels of a healthy population in Peloponnese Greece.&nbsp;</p>

PMID: 31630105; PMCID: PMC6803081.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>This is the abstract:</p> <p><strong>Objectives:&nbsp;</strong>To provide the first epidemiological lifestyle descriptions of the Italian grown-up/adult congenital heart disease (GUCH/ACHD) population by identifying the determinants of poor perceived health status.</p> <p><strong>Design:&nbsp;</strong>Cross-sectional pan-national survey.</p> <p><strong>Setting:&nbsp;</strong>Italian GUCH/ACHD patients who were members of the Italian Association of GUCH/ACHD.</p> <p><strong>Primary and secondary outcome measures:&nbsp;</strong>To discuss these lifestyle descriptions through an ad hoc developed questionnaire and health perceptions (ie, mental and physical health perception) through a short form health survey (SF-12).</p> <p><strong>Results:&nbsp;</strong>629 patients included; many investigated GUCH/ACHD lifestyles were determined similar to those of the general population - with the exception of the smoking habits, which were lower. The odds of the occurrence of inadequate physical health perceptions increased by more than two times in patients undergoing antiarrhythmic therapies (OR adjusted=2.045; 95% CI=1.201 to 3.479; p=0.008; n=629), more than 1.5 times in patients taking oral anticoagulants (OR adjusted=1.638; 95% CI=1.038 to 2.585; p=0.034; n=629) and roughly 1.7 times in patients treated with antiplatelets (OR adjusted=1.743; 95% CI=1.024 to 2.966; p=0.041; n=629). The odds of the occurrence of inadequate mental health perceptions increased by 1.7% for every year that the patients aged (OR adjusted=1.017; 95% CI=1.002 to 1.032; p=0.025; n=629).</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:&nbsp;</strong>Particular attention should be paid to these ageing patients&#39; increasing psychological needs, and additional research is needed to identify associations between their lifestyles and clinical outcomes.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;In person cognitive rehabilitation versus telerehabilitation in patients at risk of dementia: How can cognitive reserve, lifestyle habits, and other factors explain this choice?&rdquo; to be submitted to Frontiers in Psychology journal. Dataset evaluated how patients&rsquo; preference for in presence cognitive rehabilitation program (CoRe) or telerehabilitation one (HomeCore) could be associated to different factors: cognitive reserve and lifestyle habits, sociodemographic characteristics, cognitive functioning, and mental health. Considering those factors could facilitate the discrimination a priori between patients who will potentially prefer TR, by ensuring a high probability of treatment adherence and then success. To this end, we used explorative descriptive approach, logistic regression, and non-parametric models to explore the overall contribution of each variable.</p>

Quality of Life in Women Diagnosed with Breast Cancer after a 12-Month Treatment of Lifestyle Modifications

<p>Healthy lifestyles are associated with better health-related quality of life (HRQoL), favorable prognosis and lower mortality in breast cancer (BC) survivors. We investigated changes in HRQoL after a 12-month lifestyle modification program in 227 BC survivors participating in DEDiCa trial (Mediterranean diet, exercise, vitamin D). HRQoL was evaluated through validated questionnaires: EQ-5D-3L, EORTC-QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-BR23. Baseline changes were tested using analysis of variance. Multiple regression analyses were performed to assess treatment effects on HRQoL. Increases were observed in global health status (p&nbsp;&lt; 0.001), physical (p&nbsp;= 0.003), role (p&nbsp;= 0.002) and social functioning (p&nbsp;&lt; 0.001), body image (p&nbsp;&lt; 0.001), future perspective (p&nbsp;&lt; 0.001), well-being (p&nbsp;= 0.001), and reductions in fatigue (p&nbsp;&lt; 0.001), nausea and vomiting (p&nbsp;= 0.015), dyspnea (p&nbsp;= 0.001), constipation (p&nbsp;= 0.049), financial problems (p&nbsp;= 0.012), sexual functioning (p&nbsp;= 0.025), systematic therapy side effects (p&nbsp;&lt; 0.001) and breast symptoms (p&nbsp;= 0.004). Multiple regression analyses found inverse associations between changes in BMI and global health status (p&nbsp;= 0.048) and between serum 25(OH)D levels and breast symptoms (p&nbsp;= 0.002). A healthy lifestyle treatment of traditional Mediterranean diet and exercise may impact positively on HRQoL in BC survivors possibly through reductions in body weight while vitamin D sufficiency may improve BC-related symptoms. These findings are relevant to BC survivors whose lower HRQoL negatively affects treatment compliance and disease outcomes</p>

Weight Loss Management and Lifestyle Changes during COVID-19 Lockdown: A Matched Italian Cohort Study

<p>During the COVID-19 lockdown, lifestyle deterioration had a negative impact on weight, and yet no study has focused on patients already undergoing dietary therapy. We performed a cohort study among adults to evaluate the effect of lockdown on weight loss programs, and we investigated changes in eating habits and chronotype. We matched confined cases with non-confined cases among individuals who followed the same diet in 2017&ndash;2019. At baseline, all patients underwent a clinical examination and completed questionnaires on lifestyle. At follow-up, patients of the confined group were interviewed by a web call, and questionnaires were re-evaluated. We recruited 61 patients. The confined sample was mainly composed of middle-aged (52 (43,58) years) females (46 (75%)) with overweight (27 (44%)) or obesity (24 (39%)) and a moderate physical activity level (48 (81%)). Body weight at follow-up was significantly higher (1.1 (95% CI: 0.14, 2.1) kg) in the confined group adjusting for all matching variables. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet and eating behavior generally improved. Concerning chronotype, patients differentiated from Neither-types to Evening- and Morning-types. A well-monitored dietary therapy maintains weight loss during lockdown. Improvement in eating habits was observed; however, a shift of the circadian typology occurred.</p>
