Unravelling the role of thyroid hormones in seasonal neuroplasticity in European Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris)

<p class="MsoNormal">Thyroid hormones clearly play a role in the seasonal regulation of reproduction, but any role they might play in song behavior and the associated seasonal neuroplasticity in songbirds remains to be elucidated. To pursue this question, we first established seasonal patterns in the expression of thyroid hormone regulating genes in male European starlings employing in situ hybridization methods. Thyroid hormone transporter LAT1 expression in the song nucleus HVC was elevated during the photosensitive phase, pointing towards an active role of thyroid hormones during this window of possible neuroplasticity. In contrast, DIO3 expression was high in HVC during the photostimulated phase, limiting the possible effect of thyroid hormones to maintain song stability during the breeding season. Next, we studied the effect of hypothyroidism on song behavior and neuroplasticity using i<em>n vivo </em>MRI. Both under natural conditions as with methimazole treatment, circulating thyroid hormone levels decreased during the photosensitive period, which coincided with the onset of neuroplasticity. This inverse relationship between thyroid hormones and neuroplasticity was further demonstrated by the negative correlation between plasma T3 and the microstructural changes in several song control nuclei and cerebellum. Furthermore, maintaining hypothyroidism during the photostimulated period inhibited the increase in testosterone, confirming the role of thyroid hormones in activating the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis. The lack of high testosterone levels influenced the song behavior of hypothyroid starlings, while the lack of high plasma T4 during photostimulation affected the myelination of several tracts. Potentially, a global reduction of circulating thyroid hormones during the photosensitive period is necessary to lift the brake on neuroplasticity imposed by the photorefractory period, whereas local fine-tuning of thyroid hormone concentrations through LAT1 could activate underlying neuroplasticity mechanisms. Whereas an increase in circulating T4 during the photostimulated period potentially influences the myelination of several white matter tracts, which stabilizes the neuroplastic changes. Given the complexity of thyroid hormone effects, this study is a steppingstone to disentangle the influence of thyroid hormones on seasonal neuroplasticity.</p>

Data from: In both directions: Expansions of European land snails to the north and south from glacial refugia

<p><strong>Aim</strong>: The location of glacial refugia and the timing of postglacial colonisations remain of interest because together they inform about the ability of species to track shifting climates. In the associated paper, we tested a hypothesis that a central European forest land snail species survived in a northern refugium, which was proposed based on fossil finds indirectly dated to the Last Glacial Maximum and Late Glacial. We assessed the credibility of our results by comparing them to those obtained from three other, broadly sympatric land snail species.</p> <p><strong>Location</strong>: Central Europe and the Balkans.</p> <p><strong>Taxon</strong>: Pulmonate land snails: <em>Monachoides incarnatus</em> (Hygromiidae) and <em>Helix pomatia</em>, <em>Helix thessalica,</em> and <em>Caucasotachea vindobonensis</em> (Helicidae).</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We used continuous phylogeographic analysis of mitochondrial data to trace the origin of postglacially expanding lineages and direct radiocarbon dating to verify the presumed glacial presence of <em>M. incarnatus</em> on the territories of Czechia and Slovakia. Geolocated concatenated sequences of partial 16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I were analysed using BEAST 1.10.4. and conclusions were drawn from the reconstructed geographic positions of internal nodes in the resulting phylogenetic trees.</p> <p><strong>Data</strong>: Input files for the phylogeograpic analyses, containing the sequence alignments and analysis settings, and the trees summarizing the results of the analyses.</p>

Model outputs for wild ungulates occurrence and hunting yield abundance at European scale

<p>These are the outputs of a model&nbsp; for&nbsp;the occurrence and hunting yield (HY) density of wild ungulates not only for widely distributed species in Europe, but also for those ones which have a constrained distribution and ii) to compare the output of occurrence with observed HY. Random Forest function was used for modelling occurrence of species. We used occurrence data available from the past 30 years, and HY data (period 2015-2020) from records collected by <em>ENETWILD</em>. Like previous models based on HY, the response variable was the maximum number of wild ruminants annually hunted in 2015-2020 hunting seasons divided by the area (km<sup>2</sup>) of the corresponding administrative unit (HY density). Models based on HY were statistically downscaled to make predictions to 10x10km squares. Occurrence data models indicated a good predictive performance for most species, showing that the model framework proposed have improved results in comparison to previous models. The transferability of models into new regions was limited by the exposure of species to environmental conditions. As for HY models, the calibration plots showed a good and linear predictive performance for widely distributed species, as well as constrained distributed species. Overall, our results were consistent with the expected abundance distribution of widely distributed species.</p>

Scrub encroachment promotes biodiversity in temperate European wetlands under eutrophic conditions

<p>Wetlands are important habitats, often threatened by drainage, eutrophication and suppression of grazing. In many countries, considerable resources are spent combatting scrub encroachment. Here, we hypothesize that encroachment may benefit biodiversity – especially under eutrophic conditions where asymmetric competition among plants compromises conservation targets. We studied the effects of scrub cover, nutrient levels and soil moisture on richness of vascular plants, bryophytes, soil fungi and microbes in open and overgrown wetlands. We also tested the effect of encroachment, eutrophication and soil moisture on indicators of conservation value (red-listed species, indicator species and uniqueness). Plant and bryophyte species richness peaked at low soil fertility, whereas soil fertility promoted soil microbes. Soil fungi responded negatively to increasing soil moisture. Lidar-derived variables reflecting degree of scrub cover had predominantly positive effects on species richness measures. Conservation value indicators had a negative relationship to soil fertility and a positive to encroachment. For plant indicator species, the negative effect of high nutrient levels was offset by encroachment, supporting our hypothesis of competitive release under shade. The positive effect of soil moisture on indicator species was strong in open habitats only. Nutrient poor mires and meadows host many rare species and require conservation management by grazing and natural hydrology. On former agricultural lands, where restoration of infertile conditions is unfeasible, we recommend rewilding with opportunities for encroachment towards semi-open willow scrub and swamp forest, with the prospect of high species richness in bryophytes, fungi and soil microbes and competitive release in the herb layer.</p>

DEArt: Dataset of European Art

<p>DEArt is an object detection and pose classification dataset meant to be a reference for paintings between the XIIth and the XVIIIth centuries. It contains more than 15000 images, about 80% non-iconic, aligned with manual annotations for the bounding boxes identifying all instances of 69 classes as well as 12 possible poses for boxes identifying human-like objects. Of these, more than 50 classes are cultural heritage specific and thus do not appear in other datasets; these reflect imaginary beings, symbolic entities and other categories related to art.</p>

Standardizing ID-Labels for seaweed samples used for chemical composition analyses and refinery processes in Nordic and European research projects

<p><strong>Introduction</strong></p> <p>Seaweed samples can be divided into two groups:</p> <ol> <li>Small samples (½-3 kg wet weight (ww)) often used for chemical content analyses including seasonal variation and testing different cultivation conditions or preliminary lab scale experiments on storage, extraction, separation, fermentation, etc.</li> <li>Larger samples (&gt;3 kg ww) for lab- or pilot scale experiments on storage, extraction, separation, fermentation, etc.</li> </ol> <p>Seaweed samples will always have the following information-tracks:</p> <ol> <li><strong>Sample Code: </strong>A ID containing the most important information and the sample code will follow the sampled biomass from harvest to final research results.</li> <li><strong>Seaweed Processing Code:</strong> The sample code will be extended with 8 digits and 1 letter if processing of biomass occurs.</li> <li><strong>Batch Number:</strong> A code describing details about the harvest and origin of the seaweed.</li> <li><strong>Sample Overview:</strong>  An Excel file describing all details about the sample: first <strong>sample code</strong>, then species, grinding, freezing/drying specifications, seeding and harvesting information, planed aim of the sample (e.g. polysaccharides), place stored, seaweed processing details, analyse results, etc. Maintained by the sample provider.</li> </ol>
