Soil properties and N-cycling community data for 324 samples
<p>Soil microbial communities, key players of many crucial ecosystem functions, are prone to degradation due to intensified environmental perturbations. However, few ecological concepts and practices have been developed for rescuing these degraded microbial communities. Here, we carried out a pot experiment (totally 324 pots) with or without arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation and at three levels (one, three and six species) of plant diversity to disentangle how the AMF and vegetation rescue the soil nitrogen (N) -cycling microbial loop. Our results provide strong evidence that AMF inoculation improved the restoration of soil N-cycling microbial communities. This improved restoration is related to the role of AMF in enhancing interactions within the N-cycling microbial loop. Furthermore, increased plant diversity strengthened the role of AMF in rescuing degraded N-cycling microbial communities. Our findings provide novel insights into the roles of AMF and plant diversity in facilitating the rescue of microbial communities in degraded terrestrial ecosystems.</p>

Laccase/TEMPO-mediated graft hydrophobization of jute fibres to enhance the mechanical properties of jute/PLA composites
<p><span><span>In this work, the hydrophobization of lignocellulosic jute fibres was achieved via the laccase/TEMPO-mediated grafting of octadecylamine (OA) on their surface, with the aim to improve the interfacial compatibility with nonpolar polylactic (PLA) resins in fibre-reinforced composites. The modified jute fibres were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The characteristic vibrations of methylene groups and the increase in the surface C/O ratio of the jute fibres after the enzymatic treatment indicated that OA molecules were successfully grafted onto the jute fibre surface mediated by the laccase/TEMPO system. It was shown that the grafted jute fibres had increased surface hydrophobicity and reduced polarity with water contact angle of 124.2°, diiodomethane contact angle of 94.1° and surface free energy of 11.44 mJ/m<sup>2</sup>, which were attributed to the presence of the OA nonpolar alkyl chains on their surface. The tensile, bending, and dynamic mechanical properties of the hydrophobized jute/PLA composites were enhanced, which suggested stronger interfacial adhesion between the jute fibres and the PLA matrix. The mechanical stability was investigated by water immersion measurements and it was found that the modified jute/PLA composites were better in this regards than the control jute/PLA composites. Therefore, this enzymatic hydrophobic modification could be used as an effective and eco-friendly method to produce natural lignocellulosic fibre-reinforced composites with excellent performance.</span></span></p>

Property Rights, Land Misallocation and Agricultural Efficiency in China
<p>This paper examines the impact of a property rights reform in rural China that allowed farmers to lease out their land. We find the reform led to increases in land rental activity in rural households. Our results indicate that the formalization of leasing rights resulted in a redistribution of land toward more productive farmers. Consequently, output and aggregate productivity increased by 8 and 10%, respectively. We also find that the reform increased the responsiveness of land allocation across crops to changes in crop prices.</p>
Effect of crosslinking modification with 4,4´-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) on physicochemical properties of peanut meal-based adhesives
<p><span>The PM-based adhesives were prepared by crosslinking modification with diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as a crosslinking agent. The viscosity and water resistance of the modified PM-based adhesive were improved significantly, making it beneficial to the application of label industry. This paper investigated the properties of PM-based adhesives, including viscosity, solid content and water resistance time. Viscosity and solid content of the modified adhesives improved observably as MDI was introduced, and its water resistance time was up to 77 h when the modifier was added at 15% (based on PM), which met the industry requirements of Beer labels in China. </span>In addition, FTIR and XRD were used to characterize the physical and chemical interactions in the cured adhesives. The thermal stability of the cured adhesives was determined by TGA, and SEM was used to observe the microstructure of the cured adhesives.<span> The characterization and analysis results of the cured adhesives showed that incorporating MDI into the adhesives formed dense crosslinking structure because of chemical reactions between MDI and active groups on the PM protein molecules and introduced hydrophobic group into the adhesives, preventing water intrusion effectively, thus improving the water resistance of the cured adhesives. </span></p>
REBCO mixtures with large difference in rare-earth ion size: superconducting properties of chemical solution deposition-grown Yb1−xSmxBa2Cu3O7−δ films
<p>Yb<sub>1-<i>x</i></sub>Sm<i><sub>x</sub></i>Ba<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7-</sub><sub>d </sub>films have been prepared by chemical solution deposition following the Extremely-Low-Fluorine route, which allows reducing the fluorine content by 93% with respect to standard TFA solutions. The obtained results show that, on the one hand, <i>T</i><sub>c</sub> remains stable at ~ 90 K with Sm content up to <i>x </i>= 0.5 where <i>T</i><sub>c</sub> starts to increase towards the values of pure SmBCO films of ~ 95 K. On the other hand, the critical current densities <i>J</i><sub>c</sub> of the pure SmBCO films are the largest at 77 K, where the influence of a higher <i>T</i><sub>c</sub> is very relevant, while at lower temperatures and low fields, the mixed films reach larger values. This demonstrates that mixing rare earth elements <i>RE</i> in <i>RE</i>Ba<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7-</sub><sub>d</sub> causes a change in the pinning properties of the films and reveals the importance of selecting adequate <i>RE</i>BCO compounds according to the temperature and magnetic field region where a specific application operates.</p>
Data from: Changes in ecosystem properties after postfire management strategies in wildfire affected areas
<p>1. Forest are highly vulnerable to global change drivers, such as an increase in wildfire events. Learning more about how and why different postfire management strategies regulate the ability of forest ecosystem properties (e.g., plant diversity and function) to simultaneously recover after wildfire and provide multiple ecosystem functions is of critical importance.</p> <p>2. This study aims to evaluate how unburned, burned managed and burned unmanaged plots regulate the responses of multiple forest ecosystem properties (e.g., plant diversity, nutrient cycling, soil carbon stocks, water regulation, and decomposition and wood production) and overall multifunctionality to wildfires. In September 2017, we selected two postfire management strategies in a 3 km2 watershed previously affected by a wildfire in July 2012: contour-felled log debris (CFD), log erosion barriers area (LEB), and also unburned and unmanaged plots (BNA). We randomly distributed 12 plots among the three postfire management strategies (3 plots per treatment) and unburned.</p> <p>3. The results showed that multiple forest ecosystem properties were significantly affected by wildfire and that specific postfire management treatment (e.g., LEB and CFD) can be used to efficiently support plant diversity and ecosystem functioning. Our results revealed that the general indicators of ecosystem functions decreased in Mediterranean forests after wildfires and postfire management strategies (LEB and CFD) significantly helped to recover the ecosystems' short-term community-level properties and ecosystem functions (5 years after a wildfire event) to prefire levels. </p> <p>4. Synthesis and applications: These findings demonstrate that multiple ecosystem functions are affected by wildfires in Mediterranean forests and show that postfire management treatments can promote multifunctionality and plant diversity. Our results unfold the potential of LEB and CFD as effective strategies for recovering community-level properties and forest functions in the short term.</p>

Effect of B-site co-substitution on the structure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline neodymium orthoferrite synthesized by auto-combustion
<p><span>Samples of cobalt-doped neodymium orthoferrite compounds, NdCo<sub>x</sub>Fe<sub>1-x</sub>O<sub>3</sub> (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) were synthesized via glycine auto-combustion between 250 – 300 °C and calcined at 500 °C for two hours. X-ray diffraction showed that all compounds had an orthorhombic perovskite structure with space group Pbnm. Increasing cobalt doping gradually reduced the lattice parameters and contracted the unit cell volume. Both X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy showed that the particles were spherical and in the nano-sized range (19 – 52 nm) with pores between grains. Vibrating sample magnetometry at room temperature indicated that NdFeO<sub>3</sub> has high coercive field (1950 Oe) and cobalt substitution for iron led to a decrease in the coercive field, saturation and remanent magnetization which was as a result of decreased magnetic moments in the crystal and reduced canting of the FeO<sub>6</sub> octahedra. The increase in magnetization and coercive fields with increase Co was connected to the microstructure (bond lengths and angles, defects, pores, grain boundaries) and crystallite size. The compounds NdCo<sub>x</sub>Fe<sub>1-x</sub>O<sub>3</sub> show antiferromagnetism with weak ferromagnetism due to uncompensated noncollinear moments. These compounds could serve as prototypes for tuning the properties of magnetic materials (ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic) with potential applications in data storage, logic gates, switches and sensors. </span></p>
Raw data on computational analysis the relationships of energy and mechanical properties with sensitivity for 1, 1-diamino-2, 2-dinitroethene based polymer bonded explosives
<p>The dataset provides raw data on key properties in the text as well as raw data on the temperature and energy balances of the P, P1, P2, P3 and P4 systems at room temperature. These data allow the results obtained in the article to be reproduced, while the reader can obtain the raw data for the plots not labeled with data in the article and thus quantify the exact magnitude of the changes shown in the plots. The main work of the article is: Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been applied to investigate 1, 1-diamino-2, 2-dinitroethene (FOX-7) crystal and FOX-7(011)-based polymer-bonded explosives (PBXs) with four typical polymers, polyethylene glycol (PEG), fluorine-polymer (F<sub>2603</sub>), ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) and ester urethane (ESTANE5703) under COMPASS force field. Binding energy (E<sub>bind</sub>), cohesive energy density (CED), initiation bond length distribution, radial distribution function, and isotropic mechanical properties of FOX-7 and its PBXs at different temperatures were reported for the first time, and the relationship between them and sensitivity. Using quantum chemistry, FOX-7 was optimized with the four polymers at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level, and the structure and RDG of the optimized composite system were analyzed.</p>

Anthropogenic disturbance impacts ectomycorrhizal communities and abiotic soil properties: implications for an endemic forest disease
<p>In forest ecosystems, habitat fragmentation negatively impacts stand structure and biodiversity; the resulting fragmented patches of forest have distinct, disturbed edge habitats that experience different environmental conditions than the interiors of the fragments. In southwest Western Australia, there is a large-scale decline of the keystone tree species <i>Corymbia calophylla </i>following fragmentation and land use change. These changes have altered stand structure and increased their susceptibility to an endemic fungal pathogen, <i>Quambalaria coyrecup</i>, which causes chronic canker disease especially along disturbed forest habitats. However, the impacts of fragmentation on belowground processes in this system are not well understood. We examined the effects of fragmentation on abiotic soil properties and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) communities, and whether these belowground changes were drivers of disease incidence. We collected soil from 17 sites across the distribution range of <i>C. calophylla. </i>Soils were collected across a gradient from disturbed, diseased areas to undisturbed, disease-free areas. We analysed soil nutrients and grew <i>C</i>. <i>calophylla </i>plants as a bioassay host. Seedlings were harvested and roots collected after six months of growth. DNA was extracted from the roots, amplified using fungal specific primers and sequenced using Illumina MiSeq. Concentrations of key soil nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were much higher along the disturbed, diseased edges in comparison to undisturbed areas. Disturbance altered the community composition of ECM and AMF; however, only ECM communities had lower rarefied richness and diversity along the disturbed, diseased areas compared to undisturbed areas. Accounting for effects of disturbance, ECM diversity and leaf litter depth were highly correlated with increased disease incidence in <i>C. calophylla</i>. In the face of global change, increased virulence of an endemic pathogen has emerged in this Mediterranean-type forest.</p>
