Wall relief from Ashurnasirpal II palace Nimrud
After Assyria fell in 612 BC, the palace became overgrown and eventually completely buried, in which state it remained for nearly 2,500 years until rediscovered by the British born Austen Henry Layard in 1845. Layard oversaw the excavation of the palace during which time the reliefs that dominated the walls of the structure were removed from the site and sent to collections throughout Europe and North America, with the British Museum receiving the majority of these Nimrud reliefs. Despite excavating and removing many of these reliefs, a great number remained within the palace and were eventually reburied with time. In 1949 M.E.L. Mallowan re-excavated the site, which lasted until 1957, at which time the project was taken over by the Iraq Department of Antiques which still remains in control of the site. Lynally Church Wall Plaque
Broken 18th century wall plaque inserted into the inner face at the western end of the northern wall of the medieval church ruins (OF016-031001-) at Lynally, County Offaly. Lynally monastery was founded here in the 6th century by Colmán Eala who died in 611 AD. Andrew Briscoe was descended from John Briscoe of Srah Castle (OF017-006001-), County Offaly, which stands 2.6km to the north-east of Lynally Church ruins. In 1775 Andrew Briscoe leased part of his lands in the townland of Ross, located 3km south of Lynally to Patrick Tanner. Bomb Damaged Wall
A wall of St Clement Danes Church on The Strand, London. The chruch was gutted by WW2 incendiary bombs on 10th May 1941 and when the church was rebuilt this section of wall was left as a memorial to that terrible day. The church was originally built in 1681 by Christopher Wren. A church has stood here since being built by the Danish Community in the 9th Century. St Peter-on-the-Wall - Textured Model
The Saxon chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall was founded by St Cedd in 654AD. Cedd established his chapel over the ruined gate of the abandoned the 3rd century Roman fort of Othona, and reused Roman stones and bricks to help build his chapel. Poss. Carved Stone. - Location of Town Wall
This stone is a mystery. Located in a section of wall on Barrack Rd, Castledermot, it appears to be carved but the subject cannot be identified. A suggestion might be that the stone was discarded during carving, or is so weathered that it is no longer identifable. This wall was built in the early 19th century but the stone occurs approx where it crosses the path of the demolished medieval town wall.
