Data set for analyzing scaling and criticality in large-scale social systems regulated by global factors

Research information:

Title: Scaling and criticality in large-scale social systems regulated by global factors

Abstract: How do individuals in large-scale social systems behave in response to global factors and what kinds of macroscopic dynamics will emerge as consequences? Here we conduct a naturalistic observation of the daily consumer behaviours of 190,000 individuals from January 2018 to December 2022, extracting the long-term consumption dynamics of about 6000 types of commodities from approximately 2.2 million purchase orders. The consumption dynamics is subdivided into trend, seasonal, and random components, whose dynamic processes across scales are analyzed by a renormalization group. we discover that the coronavirus pandemic, an exogenetic factor acting on the social system, regulates the scaling and criticality of consumption dynamics. On a large time scale, the long-term dynamics of the system, regardless of arising from trend, seasonal, or random individual behaviours, is pushed towards a boundary between independent and correlated phases as the pandemic erupts. On a smaller time scale, short-term consumption dynamics exhibits more diversities in response to the pandemic. While the trend and random behaviours of individuals are driven to quasi-criticality and exhibit scale-invariance as the pandemic breaks out, seasonal behaviours are more robust against regulations. Overall, our study provides insights into the regulation mechanisms of global factors on the dynamics of large-scale and heterogeneous social systems.

Data set description:

RawData: A csv file for approximately 2.2 million times purchase orders made by around 190,000 individuals before, during, and after the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

ConsumptionDynamics: A csv file that describes the daily evolution of the consumption frequencies for approximately 6,000 types of commodities. Pre-Processed Data Sets for Marine Spatial Planning of a Wave-Powered Aquaculture Farm in the Northeast U.S.

These data sets are intended for marine spatial planning applications including the modeling of wave-powered aquaculture farms. They work in tandem with the Python model developed by the SEA Lab to evaluate potential sites for this development in the Northeastern U.S. The code for this model is available on GitHub at https://github.com/symbiotic-engineering/aquaculture, and details about the data and model are discussed in several related publications.

Simulation data-set for ApJ Article: "Confinement of the Solar Tachocline by a Non-Axisymmetric Dynamo"

This dataset contains the input files (including a last Checkpoint snapshot, so the simulation can be restarted), and basic simulation information (Rayleigh data products, time-averaged data products, and basic plots) for each of the 12 simulations discussed in the ApJ journal article, "Confinement of the Solar Tachocline by a Non-Axisymmetric Dynamo". Each simulation has a separate .zip file that can be downloaded either on its own or together with the rest of the simulation suite. The structure and contents of the resulting directory (after unzipping) is described in detail in the "README" .pdf document.

Note that the magnetic cases have custom diagnostic outputs and the main_input file (as directly given here) must be run using Loren Matilsky's personal branch of the code: https://github.com/illorenzo7/Rayleigh/tree/meprodsubcurvnobinrz. Otherwise, the MHD cases can be run with the current main branch of the Rayleigh code (https://github.com/geodynamics/Rayleigh), as long as some small modifications to the main_input file (described in the "README" document) are made first.

Complete Data Set for the Master Thesis: Acceptance of Robotics in Tourism

Complete data set for the master thesis "Acceptance of Robotic Technology in Tourism" including the SPSS file.

Abstract

Robotics, artificial intelligence, and automation have undergone significant evolution across various industries, from manufacturing to healthcare. The tourism industry is also embracing these technological advancements, accelerated by factors such as the global pandemic and labor shortages. Despite their transformative potential, the academic exploration of robots in tourism remains limited, particularly regarding customer attitudes and acceptance.

This master thesis addresses the gap in research by investigating the acceptance of robots in the tourism industry. The study aims to identify the factors influencing acceptance, explore potential initiatives for increased acceptance over time, and highlight challenges in integrating robotics into tourism. The research questions guide the exploration of these facets. The literature review reveals a scarcity of research on robot acceptance in tourism, with existing studies often focusing on engineering aspects rather than social science perspectives. To address this topic, this thesis formulates a comprehensive research goal, seeking to understand the factors shaping acceptance and offering insights into the opportunities and challenges of robot integration in tourism. The thesis then explores the fundamental aspects of robotics and their potential applications in tourism, presenting a micro, meso, and macro level analysis. A hypothesis model is developed based on prior research, laying the groundwork for data collection through surveys in three distinct scenarios. Upon gathering and processing the survey data using SPSS, the results are analyzed, with a focus on influencing factors affecting robot acceptance. The findings are compared to established models such as TAM, UTAUT, and the Service Robot Acceptance Model.

Keywords: robotics, artificial intelligence, adoption, technology acceptance model, tourism, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, anthropomorphism

Use not permitted without permission of the author.

Data from: Priority setting for global WASH challenges in the age of wastewater-based epidemiological surveillance

Background: It is not known how the number of deaths due to COVID-19 compare to the number of deaths due to "unsafe water, sanitation, and handwashing" during the COVID-19 global health emergency.

Methods: A dataset of deaths due to COVID-19 was downloaded from the World Health Organization. A dataset summarizing deaths due to unsafe water, sanitation, and handwashing was obtained from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).

Results indicate that COVID-19 deaths in Africa and South East Asia regions exceeded those due to unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene.
