Data from: Spatial distribution of flower color induced by interspecific sexual interaction

Understanding the mechanisms shaping the spatiotemporal distribution of species has long been a central concern of ecology and evolutionary biology. Contemporary patterns of plant assemblies suggest that sexual interactions among species, i.e., reproductive interference, lead to the exclusive distributions of closely related species that share pollinators. However, the fitness consequences and the initial ecological/evolutionary responses to reproductive interference remain unclear in nature, since reproductive isolation or allopatric distribution has already been achieved in the natural community. In Japan, three species of blue-eyed grasses (Sisyrinchium) with incomplete reproductive isolation have recently colonized and occur sympatrically. Two of them are monomorphic with white flowers, whereas the other exhibits heritable color polymorphism (white and purple morphs). Here we investigated the effects of the presence of two monomorphic species on the distribution and reproductive success of color morphs. The frequency and reproductive success of white morphs decreased in area where monomorphic species were abundant, while those of purple morphs did not. The rate of hybridization between species was higher in white morphs than in the purple ones. Resource competition and habitat preference seemed not to contribute to the spatial distribution and reproductive success of two morphs. Our results supported that color-dependent reproductive interference determines the distribution of flower color polymorphism in a habitat, implying ecological sorting promoted by pollinator-mediated reproductive interference. Our study helps us to understand the evolution and spatial structure of flower color in a community.

Point clouds (LAZ): Towards a spatial data repository for archaeological research in the Romanian Mostiștea Basin and Danube Valley

<p>Spatial data are crucial in archaeological research, where orthophotos, digital elevation models, and 3D models are widely used for mapping, documenting, and monitoring archaeological sites. The introduction of affordable and compact unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has significantly advanced the use of UAV-based photogrammetry in the past 20 years. Recently, compact airborne systems have also enabled the capture of thermal, multispectral, and aerial laser scanning data. This study presents the data acquired with different platforms and sensors at Chalcolithic archaeological sites in Romania's Mostiștea Basin and Danube Valley. Since laser scanning and photogrammetry generate large data volumes, data storage and dissemination must also be carefully considered. Based on a thorough study of system performance, data acquisition and processing methods, and data outputs, a workflow for the systematic mapping and documentation of sites has been proposed. Given the experience obtained in the last 5 summer campaigns (2018-2023), 19 sites have been accurately mapped, of which 5 sites are mapped using airborne laser scanning. 18 sites are documented using multispectral photogrammetry, and for 17 sites, interactive image-based 3D models are acquired using true-color photogrammetry. All data are stored on a publicly accessible website for visualization, as well as on an open-data platform for data exchange. For the multispectral data, a raster tile service has been implemented, allowing the use of the data in a GIS environment.</p>

Data from: Spatial and temporal genetic structure of a river-resident Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) after millennia of isolation

The river-resident Salmo salar ("småblank") has been isolated from other Atlantic salmon populations for 9,500 years in upper River Namsen, Norway. This is the only European Atlantic salmon population accomplishing its entire life cycle in a river. Hydropower development during the last six decades has introduced movement barriers and changed more than 50% of the river habitat to lentic conditions. Based on microsatellites and SNPs, genetic variation within småblank was only about 50% of that in the anadromous Atlantic salmon within the same river. The genetic differentiation (FST) between småblank and the anadromous population was 0.24. This is similar to the differentiation between anadromous Atlantic salmon in Europe and North America. Microsatellite analyses identified three genetic subpopulations within småblank, each with an effective population size Ne of a few hundred individuals. There was no evidence of reduced heterozygosity and allelic richness in contemporary samples (2005–2008) compared with historical samples (1955–56 and 1978–79). However, there was a reduction in genetic differentiation between sampling localities over time. SNP data supported the differentiation of småblank into subpopulations and revealed downstream asymmetric gene flow between subpopulations. In spite of this, genetic variation was not higher in the lower than in the upper areas. The meta-population structure of småblank probably maintains genetic variation better than one panmictic population would do, as long as gene flow among subpopulations is maintained. Småblank is a unique endemic island population of Atlantic salmon. It is in a precarious situation due to a variety of anthropogenic impacts on its restricted habitat area. Thus, maintaining population size and avoiding further habitat fragmentation are important.

Data from: Spatial and quantitative datasets of the pancreatic β-cell mass distribution in lean and obese mice

A detailed understanding of pancreatic β-cell mass distribution is a key element to fully appreciate the pathophysiology of models of diabetes and metabolic stress. Commonly, such assessments have been performed by stereological approaches that rely on the extrapolation of two-dimensional data and provide very limited topological information. We present ex vivo optical tomographic data sets of the full β-cell mass distribution in cohorts of obese ob/ob mice and their lean controls, together with information about individual islet β-cell volumes, their three-dimensional coordinates and shape throughout the volume of the pancreas between 4 and 52 weeks of age. These data sets offer the currently most comprehensive public record of the β-cell mass distribution in the mouse. As such, they may serve as a quantitative and topological reference for the planning of a variety of in vivo or ex vivo experiments including computational modelling and statistical analyses. By shedding light on intra- and inter-lobular variations in β-cell mass distribution, they further provide a powerful tool for the planning of stereological sampling assessments.
