Contrast solution properties and scan parameters influence the apparent diffusivity of computed tomography contrast agents in articular cartilage
<p>The inability to detect early degenerative changes to the articular cartilage surface that commonly precede bulk osteoarthritic degradation is an obstacle to early disease detection for research or clinical diagnosis. Leveraging a known artifact that blurs tissue boundaries in clinical arthrograms, contrast agent diffusivity can be derived from computed tomography arthrography (CTa) scans. We combined experimental and computational approaches to study protocol variations that may alter the CTa-derived apparent diffusivity. In experimental studies on bovine cartilage explants, we examined how contrast agent dilution and transport direction (absorption vs. desorption) influence the apparent diffusivity of untreated and enzymatically digested cartilage. Using multiphysics simulations, we examined mechanisms underlying experimental observations and the effects of image resolution, scan interval and early scan termination. The apparent diffusivity during absorption decreased with increasing contrast agent concentration by an amount similar to the increase induced by tissue digestion. Models indicated that osmotically induced fluid efflux strongly contributed to the concentration effect. Simulated changes to spatial resolution, scan spacing and total scan time all influenced the apparent diffusivity, indicating the importance of consistent protocols. With careful control of imaging protocols and interpretations guided by transport models, CTa-derived diffusivity offers promise as a biomarker for early degenerative changes.</p>
Raw data of: Changes in magnetic properties of magnetite nanoparticles upon microbial iron reduction
<p>The magnetic signals of magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) preserved in rocks, soils, and sediments are effective index for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. It has been demonstrated that magnetite NPs can serve as a terminal electron sink for the microbial respiration (i.e., microbial iron reduction). The magnetic properties of magnetite NPs may be altered by microbial iron reduction, which is a critical but often overlooked process in paleomagnetism. In this study, three magnetite NPs with different particle sizes were reduced by a dissimilatory iron-reducing bacterium (<em>Shewanella oneidensis</em> MR-1) under a non-growth condition mimicking that of the early Earth and modern oligotrophic environment. The changes in magnetic, chemical as well as crystallographic properties of the magnetite NPs during the microbial reduction process were examined. Our results showed that the bioreduction rate of magnetite NPs was mainly controlled by their particle size and redox state. In addition, the microbial iron reduction could affect both the crystallographic and magnetic properties of three types of magnetite NPs used herein. After bioreduction, the crystal lattice parameters and magnetic susceptibility of the magnetite NPs increased, while their remanence recording capability and coercivity decreased (i.e., "softer" magnetism). Furthermore, bioreduced magnetite NPs had a larger remanence loss near the Verwey transition region with low-temperature magnetic analysis. These results indicate that the microbial reduction of magnetite NPs deserves attention when sedimentary magnetites are used in paleoenvironment reconstruction.</p>

Relating Crystal Structure to Surface Properties: A Study on Quercetin Solid Forms
<p>This dataset was used in the publication "Relating Crystal Structure to Surface Properties: A Study on Quercetin Solid Forms". In this work, the surface properties of two different quercetin solvates (quercetin dihydrate and quercetin DMSO solvate) were studied using molecular (synthonic) modeling and experimental techniques, including inverse gas chromatography (IGC) and contact angle measurements, to establish a relationship between crystal structure and surface properties. The attachment energy model was used to predict morphologies and calculate surface properties through the study of their growth synthons. The modeling results confirmed the surface chemistry anisotropy for the two forms. For quercetin dihydrate, the {010} facets were found to grow mainly by nonpolar offset quercetin–quercetin stacking interactions, thus being hydrophobic, while the {100} facets were expected to be hydrophilic, growing by a polar quercetin–water hydrogen bond. For QDMSO, the dominant facet {002} grows by a strong polar quercetin–quercetin hydrogen bonding interaction, while the second most dominant facet {011} grows by nonpolar π–π stacking interactions. Water contact angle measurements and IGC confirmed a greater overall surface hydrophilicity for QDMSO compared to QDH and demonstrated surface energy heterogeneity for both structures. This work shows how synthonic modeling can help in the prediction of the surface nature of crystalline particles and guide the choice of parameters that will determine the optimal crystal form and final morphology for targeted surface properties, for example, the choice of crystallization conditions, choice of solvent, or presence of additives or impurities, which can direct the crystallization of a specific crystal form or crystal shape.</p>
